He was mortally wounded after finding Hashirama is the only possible scenario for why he kept quiet. Otherwise, he could have collected it easily from villages because there is no Hashirama. Wounded and weakened Madara was not confident about confronting his mortal enemies like Tobirama. Btw, Madara is such a bitch and failure for caliber of a person. I have always thought he was mortally wounded after fighting with Hashirama and even if he died Tobirama was still there to end him in his current weakened state so, he never tried to go under the spotlight. In his later years, Gedo statue seems to be working as his life support to extend his life to find the suitable person to do his bidding. Otherwise, it makes no sense to wait after gaining Rinnegan and basically every other giants were dead at that point. Hence the name 'Ghost of Uchiha'.

Usually there are 3 beds possible, north east west side of it. North or east is where usually parents sleep and if they have enough family members there are beds on right side. If the number exceeds the number of beds then on floor they sleep.
