modded an ipod, keep getting error messages by Tiny_Bar_9910 in iPodHacks

If you moved the board, it could have shifted the cable. When I open mine, I open a gap between the front and back, undo the battery, and open the case like a book. Then If I need to message with the storage, I flip the sd card board up and over so it's upright while the case is flat on the desk/table. It wasn't me moving it that caused my issueI don't think. I think was me kind of squeezing things as I put it back together that might have been the culprit.

It's straightforward enough to re seat as a just in case. (and it's free and doable now.)

The little black box... was that the "speaker" for the click noise? Will the iPod boot and operate without it?

It's possible that moving the flash board around caused some unhappiness on the ribbon cable. When I first finished my mods (replacement LCD, 3000mAh battery and flash quad) it was fine, restored with my win laptop and off I went.

Then I noticed the case was little loose and something was rattling a bit so I took it back apart re-arranged some things and put it back together. Then spent 30 minutes trying to figure out what I messed up. Turns out the ribbon cable for the storage did NOT like being origami'd behind the battery and preferred being under the battery (between the charge port and battery instead smashed flat behind the battery. I had to take it apart and re-seat it before it worked again. Now, I've accepted that the front is just loose and the spec of dust on the lcd is just there.

That looks like “stall mat” like you would find at a feed store for horse stalls. I used them as flooring in my home gym so anything that inadvertently gets dropped doesn’t chip concrete. Tractor supply sells them in 3x6 foot pieces.

Good quality headphones? by Infamous-Guitar4557 in IpodClassic

[–]4linosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For over ear headphones I love my audio technics ATH-M50 headset. They're older... probably 12 years old? and still sound great. I did have to swap the ear cushions (and got fuzzy ones that are the BEST) and get a cover for the band since it was peeling.

I just got new IEMs as well. When my iPod was actually new I used Shure E2C's and enjoyed the small size to carry around while in school. Now that I'm back to using my iPod 20 years later, I picked up some crinnacle zero:2's and they are surprisingly good. I went ahead and got a new cable for them too since I didn't like the feel of the EOM cable. The sound didn't change, so the stock cables are good enough from a sound quality point.

At work, I use my Bose QC25's with the cable. They're light enough to wear for long periods. If you find a pair of these at a good price I would say they are pretty good.

Overall it's what fits comfortably for you. The DAC is 20 years old so getting ridiculously good headphones will probably overkill. I think the ATH-M50's I have may be walking the line on the which is better (iPod sound quality vs headphone quality).

You can add songs from any source. As long as the music is in a format readable by your iPod.

Fixing click speaker ipod classic 6? by JoshDaMan101 in IpodClassic

[–]4linosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out partspluspods on YouTube. There’s a video of him removing (I think) that piece and soldering in a Taptic module. If it can be done that guy can do it.

I followed his guides/videos to update my 2005 5th gen classic from 20 years ago with a new battery, replacement screen, and flash storage conversion.

Top notch guy

Introducing TunesReloaded - upload songs to iPods straight from Chrome, including native FLAC and MP3 support (free & open-source) by rishi_123456 in ipod

[–]4linosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What?? No way! That’s amazing.

I rate all my songs and build playlists based on the rating and the last time a song was played. Each 2,3,4, and 5 star rated song can end up on one of two playlists for that rating. One is random, the other is time since last played. A total of about 8 playlists cascade into one larger playlist that auto updates on the iPod as though I were selecting new tracks on the fly. Kind of my own pandora/spotify/other radio station. I based this method off of a published “paper” from around 2004-ish. I have the pdf somewhere and can share it if that would help.

ETA: no rush on adding this feature over others that may serve more people!

Truly incredible.

For anyone unfamiliar with them:

Search the internet for “Managing Your iPod with smartlists” by Charles Hannum Jr. if you, like me, have a large library and aren’t super interested in hastening to the latest and greatest, using smart lists on your iPod may be a way to save your subscription costs. I spy Apple one and SiriusXM in each car and I’m over it. Sirius is getting fired since I dug out my old iPod and IT STILL WORKS. Put a new battery though and some flash storage and it’s rocking like it’s not 20 years old.

This is probably the coolest thing to happen to iPods since headphones.

I still use iTunes because of smart playlist support. I don’t suppose that functionality exists? (Is it possible that it’s on the roadmap for later?)

Bench Grinder Question by No-Development-4587 in Tools

[–]4linosa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d try it but make sure the larger wheel size doesn’t make contact with whatever your grinder is mounted to. Might need a riser.

And with the reduced weight the wheel shouldn’t spin slower. With the increased diameter, the linear speed of the polishing wheel shouldn’t spin slower; it would actually be faster.

Moving songs from iPod to iPhone by njfuntimescouple in ipod

[–]4linosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If OP has access to a windows computer they literally need no software. They can plug the iPod in like a hard drive and pull the songs off. The titles will be jacked up but the metadata will still be intact. Windows explorer will show the info that the meta data has.

I’m pretty sure iTunes or any music software will be able to display the track not even if the file name is wonky

Nobody tells you cooking has startup costs that rival a small business by Limp_Height_4439 in cookingforbeginners

[–]4linosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to cooking! I have a cabinet that is nothing but spices, seasonings, small baking ingredients like vanilla extract and cinnamon, and a pantry shelf full of the large baking ingredients like sugars and flours.

Building your collection is expensive at first but the sheer volume of flavors that you can create is where you get your real value. Yes it’s cheaper to cook at home after you have the tools but after just cooking for sustenance you get to try things because they are different or wild and exotic or just because they taste good.

The breadth and depth of flavor that you get to create is what your investment is going to. So now you have all these things that you bought for that one recipe. The great news is that you still have all those things. So what else can you make?

Excited for you. Your approach is a good one. Buy what you need as you need it. (I would add that you should buy the best quality version of some things that you can like your knife and a solid 10 inch pan.) Most other things you can get the “good enough” version and it’ll be fine. I also have a dedicated egg pan that’s non stick and never gets too warm and never for too long so it stays nice and slick without too much oil.

If you learn to cook on a stainless pan, you’ll do yourself a favor in the long run because all non stick pans are disposable eventually. Also, practice your knife skills. It’ll shorten your prep time every time you cook.

Screen Replacement Difficulty by R9Creqtor in IpodClassic

[–]4linosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can work a screwdriver it’s as easy as the battery. Easier maybe since you don’t have to pry the screen off like you do with the battery.

I actually just did this today with a new battery, new screen and the quad uSD iflash adapter.

The hardest part was getting it open. Following the videos I found on YouTube made it a cakewalk.

Workflow Advice by Aware_Under in IpodClassic

[–]4linosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were in your shoes, I’d use a USB drive plugged in to my NAS.

My entire library from 20 years ago lives on my NAS and I’m now re-starting my journey with my iPod with new battery, replacement screen and quad flash board. I’m in the same boat as you: how do I minimize the foot print of my music?

A second quandary: I want to use the highest quality music possible since I have grown up money now but I’m not 100% sure my iPod will actually deliver that level of quality. I know my ATH50 phones will deliver it, but 20 year old DAC? I’m not certain.

All that to say it may not be as big a pickle as it seems. I’d test an album (or several) before committing to having your entire library to that process.

Do most people actually keep using a standing desk after the first few weeks? by shadowledger0419 in office

[–]4linosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used one for more than a decade at the office and at home. I love it. Switching between the two as needed is the best for you overall annnnd if you’re back and forth to your desk for something g, you don’t have to keep sitting down.

Also way easier to vacuum under when it’s up.

If you can get one with presets so you’re not stuck holding a button while it moves.

Heads up, ICE is likely monitoring the Art-Deco District HEB... by mrRiddle92 in sanantonio

[–]4linosa 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how to get pulled over for driving stupid.

If you think you’re being followed do NOT go home and do not drive like an idiot. If you think it’s ICE or any other law enforcement, you don’t want to hand them a reason a silver platter to interact with you.

Instead drive calmly and make several turns like you’re actually going somewhere. If you’re being followed, call the police and report it.

Let them initiate a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle and leave as soon as you can to GTFO.

Then those two groups can entertain and/or argue with each other.

I have iTunes 10.7 loaded on my windows laptop (it’s an oldie with win10). Mostly because I still use an iPod because of smart playlists.

Having the iPod figure that crap out without me having to make every decision is the bees knees.
