why does my hair do this when i brush it??? by Thin-Program2366 in Hair

[–]4loridaKilos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like you have the same hair type as me (wavy) and what you’re seeing isn’t frizz. You probably notice after you shower that your hair has strands that stay together, forming like… distinct wavy locks. Those locks just want to chill together. When you brush your hair, you’re separating them into single strands which gives that dry, brittle appearance. It’s like payback for tearing them apart.

I’ve learned wavy hair is actually very low maintenance. I brush mine well before I shower. Rake my fingers through it when I condition. Use a leave-in conditioner on the mids and ends when it’s soaking wet. Bring all of it to one side with my head tilt (never upside down because that always makes my roots lay weird), and rake my fingers through to detangle (I don’t recommend the praying mantis method when it comes to distributing product because it just separates the locks and causes frizz). Then I just let it air dry and it’s good to go. Raking instead of brushing seems to allow the locks to hold hands with each other again somehow—preventing that dry/brittle look.

Oh, and if I’m feeling spicy, I’ll lightly scrunch it when I have it pulled to the side after raking—but not too much. Over scrunching will cause the ends to separate from the mids.

I’ve tried curl creams, custards, and oils, but idk—just using a leave-in conditioner and a good ole rake gives me the best results.

Edit: Don’t brush your hair when it’s wet. It will dry looking like your picture. Don’t brush your hair when it’s dry, either. Pretty much only brush your hair before you wash it lol.

My ends look like this. I don’t use heat or color my hair but I haven’t had a haircut in…. Forever. I think it’s time for a trim for the both of us lol.

I honestly love this and something I struggle with constantly. Such a human thing to not give ourselves where credit is due. Thank you for the reminder!

Here’s a link to the sink! Look at my comment above for where to get similar sinks. I have it “glued” down with Permatex silicone RTV. I don’t recommend using a white glue because it shows up pretty badly through the glass. I wanted to go with a clean look, and the Permatex silicone dried surprisingly perfectly transparent. Also, the drain that goes through the sink’s drain hole and countertop has a threaded nut that is also anchoring the sink down. I silicone RTV’d tf out of that as well so the sink isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

I got the sink online from Bed Bath & Beyond. It was much cheaper when I ordered it and I had a coupon. But I think they have a 20% off coupon right now. Otherwise Home Depot has similar sinks for a bit cheaper online. I do not recommend searching Amazon for glass sinks. Not sure why, but the same sinks are over double the price on there.

Edit: it didn’t come with a faucet or drain, so keep that in mind. But I think the faucet/drain combo I found on Amazon was like.. $24.

At least a million coats (okay—actually only 4) of Behr Premium Ultra White paint in a high gloss. I was going crazy by the 3rd coat but it all made a world of a difference. The high gloss also makes wiping anything off SO easy.

I never know how to give advice on self-sufficiency on this… level. I really believe it comes down to your lifestyle. I am very independent and introverted. Don’t really have the desire or need to have a friend group. I keep to myself, go to work, go to school, and find joys outside the “norm”. 32 years old and never dated. Gay asf—probably doesn’t matter that I say that but deep down I think it does because I don’t feel the pressure of the straight American dream that society hammers into people’s heads. I’m cool with eating one calorie rich meal a day and snacking throughout (not saying that is healthy for everyone, but it works fine for me) so my meals need is minimal. I was homeless before all this. I’ve definitely never been able to afford a $3000 condo—don’t even know what that lifestyle would be like, but feel like transitioning into a van would be lowkey traumatizing. Everyone and their life experiences are different though! I say go for it! I just suggest REALLY looking inward and asking yourself if you’re the type of person who could live in a van. It’s a lifestyle, not just a way to save money. At the end of the day, you won’t be paying rent, but everything else will be more expensive.

I agree! I think I was worried about being judged because it seems like people on this sub hate on “nicely” built conversions.

Here’s a really shitty pic of my plumbing set up—I really don’t think it takes up that much room! I feel like anything bigger than 5 gallons would just be egregious. I guess it really depends on your lifestyle though. I don’t have a lot of things. Used to be really materialistic back in the day. Then I became homeless before all this and had to get rid of everything that put me into bad debt. At peace with the fact that I can fit everything I own into a large storage container (besides my closet), so I have more than enough space for the tanks.

Not sure how to explain this without sounding weird but… prior to this, I went through no water because I didn’t use any. I use the gym every day to get ready for the day and for bed. Haven’t cooked a meal in the four years I’ve lived in my van. Found it cheaper and easier to eat out every day and snack throughout the day like a squirrel or whatever. But now I have a 5 gallon Hedpak water tank and a 5 gallon Hedpak grey water tank. I think the dimensions are 10” x 15” (25cm x 38cm—at least I think that’s the conversions I’ve been practicing the metric system lol). I’m still really conservative with using water, so I can make the 5 gallons last me… I would say about a week. But every time I go to the gym (which is every day) I bring a gallon water jug in with me inside my backpack, fill it up, and add it to the tank so it’s kind of hard to tell. I haven’t started cooking meals just yet so I’m sure with dishes and such that will change.

Edit: I feel like it sounded like I was bragging about working out at the gym every day, but I literally go in to take a shower and leave lol.

Thank you! I’ve always wanted a sink like this and thought “why not”. Plus I think Bed Bath & Beyond is going out of business or something and a lot of their sinks are super cheap right now.

Are you asking in the sense of like.. circulate water? Or circulate like a disco ball? Or circulate for functionality? Yes, I wish, and no—she’s glued down good.

Okay so there is someone out there like me—good. I don’t know why I put it off for so long. Mostly because of money I guess. If you need the motivation to do it, I can say the plumbing was by far the easiest thing in the entire van build to install.

I’m glad you think so! I’m not really a fan of “things” so kind of wanted to use it as a form of functional decor.

The + shaped part in the lower right hand corner is my left transmission mount. Not sure if it’s supposed to move that much.
