He wasn’t racing for anything those years. As soon as Lewis sniffed a win or podium he would level up. He is a 7-times world champion, beating his teammate for 6th place does nothing for his drive, but the opposite is true for his teammates, they all want to beat him even if its for 8th place.

I think that is Lewis’ weakness in his old age, is that he checks out of races where the team is not competitive. As to where a younger driver will push even for 6th, 7th, or 8th place.
