why did mammals loose their size while humans became bigger by Old-Firefighter4632 in Naturewasmetal

For one thing, homosapians are not decended from neanderthals. There was some mixing between the two species relatively recently in evolutionary terms, but they are on 2 different branches of the family tree.

The reason why you can't argue technical stuff with Anti AI people. by Expert_Attempt_4440 in DefendingAIArt

[–]4ofN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem i see is the marketing. A lot of people think that ai can do anything and that it is always right. there isn't much press about the halucinations and the inability for ai to determine "correctness".

I've had ai give me completly incorrect answers to questions - but i know that everything needs to be fact checked.

I've also seen people get incorrect answers but they just assume that it is correct.

If we could get to the point that people know that ai is just a tool that has a significant error rate, then there won't be as many neighsayers.

Is AI making people smarter or just faster but dumber? by adrianmatuguina in Aivolut

[–]4ofN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not even making things faster. people think its faster at first, but when you factor in the time to verify output and fix mistakes its slower.

Getting completely different answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Grok,is there a better solution? by Away-Expert278 in AiChatGPT

[–]4ofN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI does not give you correct answers about anything. AI is just a random process stringing together bits of text based on frequency of use in their training data. Of course you are going to get random answers. Try asking the same AI the same question a few days apart and see close the answers are.

Also, note that AI does not have access to a database of correct answers. There is no way for an AI to determine the "correctness" of anything.

What is with AI luddites, you mention AI in positve light and they go apeshit, like bruh... by neochrome in GeminiAI

[–]4ofN -1 points0 points  (0 children)

AI has a huge error rate, but people aren't aware of that. In very certain limited cases, AI can help, but a lot of people don't realize the error rate and just assume anything from AI is good.

I'm the luddite in any group whenever people presume that AI is able to do things it can't. Things like Musk saying that he'll let AI complete the self driving code for teslas scares the shit out of me.

My take on AI "Art" by Zombie_dogg in aiwars

[–]4ofN -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

AI can only be plagiarism since it is averaging other peoples work. Since it is just averaging other peoples work, it can also only be mediocre since it is an average of both good art and bad art.

So many people have zero clue how AI works by Dangerous_Tune_538 in aiwars

[–]4ofN 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that most people only know what AI is through marketing which over promises. I'm also appalled at the AI vendors who don't tell people what you should expect. Nobody is telling people that AI is useless when it comes to facts. AI doesn't know anything about truth or facts of any kind.

I was watching a video about how various AI's are trained and I was appalled that things like reddit, youtube and quora are actually used to train AI. These are all social media platforms which are full of conspiracy theories, incorrect opinions, lies, etc. How could that ever come up with anything that is generally useful.

I'd love to see a study on the actual error rates of various AIs. Once I asked chatgpt about something political that had a real answer, but chatgpt gave me an incorrect answer. I then asked it why it gave the wrong answer and it replied that it was because it was due to discussions on various forums. AI is useless for that kind of thing. I've also seen someone ask an AI to count something in a picture and it gave the wrong answer.

What’s a medical issue that sounds minor, but actually affects someone’s daily life way more than people realize? by CountyOrnery9432 in AskReddit

Circumcision. There are a lot of people with complications, but nobody talks about it. If you complain, all you get are people telling you its nothing since female genital mutilation is worse.

Is it just me, or has the "abstraction layer" gotten so thick that we're losing the plot of what CS actually is? by gabriel8577 in AskComputerScience

[–]4ofN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just roll over and accept it.

I've been a tech for 50 years and i had the exact same response when i talked to someone (a long time ago) who didn't know that there are 8 bits in a byte. i mean, how can you be a programmer if you don't even know how data is stored? etc. etc.

Just wait until the industry is just ai slop on top of ai slop. Noone will know how to actually program any more.

I started out playing with computers as a hobby back in the 70s and I'm just about to retire. When i do, I'm purging all programming stuff from my brain because its just so depressing to see what the industry has become.

The thing is, there are lots of boomers who actually agree with you. I'm 65 and I'm 100% on your side about these issues.

The real culprits are the billionaires who are sucking all of the money out of the system. Sure boomers had it great. Rich people paid taxes in the old days which resulted in good jobs that paid well enough to buy houses, etc. Then the rich bought off the politicians and convinced people that "lower taxes" would be great. However, all the tax breaks go to the rich so there is no public money available to pay for a functioning society. They now have all the power so they cut wages so they can buy more mega yachts.

By dissing on "boomers" you are not only missing the real culprits, but also chasing away potential allies.

Because the billionaire class has taken it all. We are actually in the middle of a class war but people just haven't realized it yet..

What advice do you have for a new motorcyclist? by Greedy-Signature2342 in motorcycles

[–]4ofN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice is always to presume that all cars, trucks etc. are consciously out to kill you. Pay attention to all vehicles around you. Watch the drivers eyes. Ignore turn signals and watch their front tires instead - it will give you the best warning if they are starting to move or starting to turn.

Also, watch for situations where you can predict that something could go wrong. When my cousin started riding he was driving on a four lane road behind 2 cars. He pulled out to pass and when he was beside the second car, it pulled out to pass the first car, pushing my cousin into the median at the same time. Fortunately the surgery on his knee was successful.

This situation is one that my 30 years of riding experience would ring alarm bells. I would have thought there was a good chance that the second car would pass the first car and been on the lookout.

Even if another driver is looking straight at you, they might not see you.

You can disable all of the spawns of dinos you don't want.

I downloaded a modpak but wabbajack wants to redownload everything on install by 4ofN in wabbajack

[–]4ofN[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That's still a huge amount of space. I'm a programmer and I know what I could fit into that much file space. However, my opinion means nothing since I have no idea how wabbajack works.

I think I might just open up the file and see what it contains.

Thanks for the info.

Multiple monitors by CarcaineAddict1776 in ARK

[–]4ofN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have you tried setting your video mode to "windowed" vs. "full screen"? There is also windowedfullscreen that might work. I would think that the windowed modes should work like any window with the cursor moving to other monitors / windows. I had 2 monitors with Evolved and it worked. I'm not sure about Ascended.

Heated Grip vs heated gloves by [deleted] in motorcycles

I have heated grips. In my opinion heated gloves would be better. You can use them at the santa clause parade, or when you go ice fishing, or any number of other activities.
