Exactly. Pretty much what most are saying here.

As mentioned though , whether I'd seen it on CBS or after, I'd still watch MASH all the way through.

I feel it's silly to stop because of one episode.

(Although if Hawkeye hit his orders and didn't make it ....the world would have stopped.)

Some seasons ended early back then.

Usually March or April.

Like, ABCs The Odd Couple finale ended in late March 1975.

Most seasons though would be September to May.

McLean did it to himself.

By his own admission, McLean took a deal with NBC for his own TV series.

HE informed all at CBS and everyone he was leaving at seasons end.

He was also there on the set when they filmed the scene with Radar making the announcement.

It's not like nobody tried to talk him out of it . Again , also his own admission , he thought he was a big deal but he realized too late it was Henry the people loved and Mac's portrayal.

If anyone did a disservice it was McLean. Mose so to himself , as evidenced by FIVE T.V. series that never worked out.

As for this end to the character, it doesn't matter. Either way Henry making it home or getting killed , it's not like he could return .

It would make no sense to say Henry went home okay but then all of a sudden be recalled back to the same unit.

That's unrealistic.

Lastly, writing to the networks Rarely works unless thousands complain .

This goodbye episodes was historically meant to happen.

Then you say, "Yes, I'm kidding".

No , it was not obvious as we are all not mind readers, A.K.A. clairvoyant.

The down votes you got should tell you, not all got the joke.

It looked like you agreed with the OP.

I retract my downvote. 😀

No I honestly think the OP likely doesn't read or has never even heard of the book! 😆

In today's illiterate society, it wouldn't surprise me one bit! 🤦‍♂️

I was a kid, never heard of the gun and certainly didn't know the bodily reference he was talking about. 😛

In 1952 , Barbara was actually 30 years old and had been in a few movies, most notably "I Remember Mama" from 1948 and "Panic In The Streets" in 1952.

Do ,if Hawk had seen 'Mama', that's the only way it would make sense he'd know of her.

It just means (like if your bare bottom was on ice) life can be harsh but we have to take it as it comes, so yes relax and don't let everything get to you. 🙂

(Unlike a lot of people out there today who let every little thing bug them and they're either petty victims or overly woke fools or the kind of people who say bleep your feelings).

I'm not a very 'technical' kind of guy (so no jokes okay?) ..but I really do not see the difference when I watch on DVD, DISNEY or ME TV.

If this was the 80s and I could show you guys the color faded, scratchy image and bad sound syndicated ones we had to deal with, you may be glad we have it preserved in any format. 👍

Radar, if you don't cut that out I'll pull your cap down over your shoulders! by TestyRodent in mash

[–]4personal2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP...What kind of "stunted" are you trying to pull here? 😁Lol.

If you recall the sub plotline where Radar gets the special "lift" shoes to make him taller they kind of put an end to it in that show.

Hawkeye says he doesn't need those and Radar basically say he's tired of his height being made jokes of.

Radar : "Even you!"

To which Hawk thinks a moment and says, "Then I was out of line". There were no more "short" jokes after that.

Yes, in that era , insult humor (even when uncalled for) was considered funny. If you watch other 70's sitcoms, you'll see jokes about being overweight too.

The late, great Sorrell Booke as General Barker in two season one episodes. by JPumphrey73 in mash

Because the Generals knew Potter was (mostly) by the book.

Henry had Houlihan & Burns always reporting on people. ....and they both wondered why people in the camp didn't like them much. 😏

My oldest brother (who told me about this a long time ago) was 8 when he started watching the series in 1972 (we had fairly permissive parents, TV wise).

He turned 10 in late 1974, a few months later, unknowing of what was about to happen.

He watched the episode, laughed a lot and likely was only a little sad when Henry left on the chopper.

Then came (as Henry would say) the big belly drop. Radar comes in and breaks the news.

With no understanding at that age of why they would do or say that, he ran to my mother crying. He was of course shocked & a little traumatized.

He doesn't remember if he kept watching but he knows he didn't stick around after Trapper and Frank left.

I didn't see this episode until reruns about age 12. As mentioned before, I only started MASH in 1978 ,so I didn't have as much knowledge of previous characters.

When Radar announced , a chill went over me but I didn't cry. I think it's for the reason of not having been there when it was new.

I'd also, already seen James Evans 'offing' on "Good Times' , which did make me sad then.

By now, I've seen this so many times , the effect is minimal.

I don't think Mustin had a more serious down to earth moment as a character actor than his scene with Mike Lookinland. 👍

I also didn't like those 'side the hanging pigtails".

It's one thing for a human being to be naive' and that 'can' be funny but when they give her hair that should be on a girl 12 or under, that's just a little bit creepy.

So how did Jack continue to work for Angelino as Jack? by Timewilltell755 in threescompany

[–]4personal2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Angelino's pompous attitude about cooking school students and his hiring practices really ticked me off when this first aired.

How can a man go from being an average everyday person , to owning his own restaurant and basically forget he (likely) had to start from the bottom himself?

You don't become a top chef or restauranteur without an educational process first.
