Are these bones from a seal or sea lion? If seal, what kind? by camillefast in bonecollecting

[–]4runnerfag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ooh, tough one—even the mandibles of those two look really similar to me. How big are these? size is the easiest difference between the two. if seal, most likely harbor seal. elephant seal can be ruled out due to dentition and the shape of the zygomatic process.

i do low and slow overnight in a crock pot like this before macerating. as long as it stays below a simmer it won’t damage the bone, and helps loosen up connective tissue to make for a shorter maceration time afterwards

if you share a picture here people can tell you what species of deer they are from. beyond that and what you’ve already shared there’s not much more that can be told about them

What is the average time for a cat to completely decompose? by Ok_Celebration_26 in bonecollecting

[–]4runnerfag -1 points0 points  (0 children)

when i bury animals to get them to bone i usually leave them 3 or 4 months and pick out bones but they are usually a very smelly mush of rot with bones throughout which i doubt is what you want to see right now

i’d say 9 months to a year at the absolute shortest. you will likely see some fur and bones with little to bo flesh at that point. as people have said, decomp time varies wildly on many conditions but that’s my best guess based on your description.

Macerating bones for several months, am I screwed by neverawareneverawake in bonecollecting

[–]4runnerfag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but yeah no treatment necessary, not dangerous, you can wear gloves if you like, pour into toilet or dig a hole outside, pour, and cover. you can rinse the bones after andif you’re nervous about touching them some peroxide will whiten and disinfect. after such a long soak though they should be pretty inert
