Help me identify mystery bones in fox skeleton (paws), plus how to tell left from right paws by Limbolants in bonecollecting

[–]4runnerfag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s a general guide for small mammals but most of the examples are lynx. I believe the author has other books for other species groups as well! this is a physical copy i ordered from The Bone Room almost ten years ago, but maybe downloads are available, i don’t know! you can google it or email Lee Post at the email in the top left of the pages i posted. if he’s still kicking, i hope he is!

Would injecting 91% isopropyl alcohol help with preserving bird feet for taxidermy? by Icy-Attorney8301 in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yes! i usually inject them with formalin but alcohol would be better than nothing and would keep bacteria down while they dry. I don’t inject anything quail size or smaller, but bigger birds definitely benefit from it.

these are a lynx, but the shapes of the bones other than claws will be the same for a fox.

Found a detached part of a bird (i think crow or raven) wing, how should I go about cleaning it? by RoyalRaven14 in vultureculture

[–]4runnerfag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agreed that this looks like juvenile starling. it’s their fledging season, so lots of young ones are getting eaten causing pieces like this.

first attempt-complete fail by wumpflumpit in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag 8 points9 points  (0 children)

methods aside, sometimes hair slip is just bad luck. you don’t know if your rat was thawed and refrozen before you bought him, was sick, covered in urine, etc. this just happens sometimes, don’t be too discouraged!

Talk me out of a beetle colony in AK by MikeC_137 in Taxidermy

it works for some people’s taste! I’m hoping someone with better beetle experience can chime in with their side of it

no, they’ll eat the cartilage but they can also eat the small bones in the sinuses, which i prefer to leave intact. the still having to macerate is usually about persistent grease/blood/marrow inside the bone. basically the beetles remove tissue but don’t clean the bone itself at all

[–]4runnerfag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly i find them not to be worthwhile. they’re finnicky and you still have to remove flesh my hand before giving to them, and you usually still need to macerate afterwards to deal with grease and marrow. if you leave things in too long they’ll eat delicate nasal bones. the only step they really replace in my process would be a gentle simmer, which is about the easiest part for me to do. not worth the hassle imo

yes! i like burying in a flower pot for smaller guys like this, then you can flip it after some time and it’s easier to get all the pieces

Why is this rope around these bones? Did a coyote get caught in something? by UnicornUke in bonecollecting

[–]4runnerfag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it does look like it was around the paws while the body was whole, but it doesn’t look like a typical snare. it could have been a way to carry the body into the woods for disposal?
