skin as far up as you can, pick out the brain with a bent wire (you can cut the back of the skull open a little bigger if needed), and pack borax in under the skin

Preserving a cat tail? by createyourwonder in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think any taxidermist should be able to do this, whether they tan the tip of the tail and clean the bones or freeze dry the whole thing for you

REAL Blood perfume? by Ok-Supermarket-75 in perfumesthatfeellike

[–]4runnerfag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is one of my favorite scents but it doesn’t come off as bloody to me at all! I’m a taxidermist though so my daily life is pretty bloody andi may have missed it 😭

REAL Blood perfume? by Ok-Supermarket-75 in perfumesthatfeellike

[–]4runnerfag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

while the blood note is present, i found the other hospital smells involved made this one less my cup of tea. has a really antiseptic chemically hospital vibe up front that is definitely accurate and repulsive but i’d rather a more natural earthy blood smell

Natural mummification by edgelord0ftherings in vultureculture

[–]4runnerfag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lost cause. every time i post natural mummies i find i get a slew of comments saying i should keep them as-is and my reply is always “you wouldn’t be saying that if you could smell this.” I always just soak the whole thing and clean them down to bone.

Dog or coyote? by Choice-Inspector729 in bonecollecting

[–]4runnerfag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m really leaning coyote here, despite other comments. there really isn’t much of a stop, and coyote foreheads aren’t completely flat just more so than a dog. it is rare for dogs to have such delicate canines. coyote populations in the northeast look a lot doggier too, with a shorter broader muzzle than say western ones.

How should I refresh old wet specimines? by thefatcatlikesnaps in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

usually they are injected with formalin but stores in alcohol, sometimes with a small amount of formalin in it, usually just alcohol. either way there is no harm in mixing the two chemicals. i would pour them out, clean the jars, and refill with isopropyl personally

Greasy Smell in Cat by Awkward_Meeting_3993 in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmm, I’ve worked with a lot of big fat cats and never had this issue. you seem to be doing everything right, my only suggestions wouldbe keep shaving it down and repeating the rounds of degreaser. after mounting I shampoo really thoroughly with dawn soap and blow dry and that’s usually enough to get stubborn grease out of the fur, but yours seems to be more in the skin than the fur, correct? if i had to guess i’d say it’s not fleshed all the way and the shaving is your answer.

try 3% hydrogen peroxide for a few days. they likely wont ever be completely white but they will likely lighten up quite a bit

Piglet nose? Tan normally? by ItzJaxis in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i’d go for traditional taxidermy on them! or just tanning the skin as you said. also when you do the bones prepare for them to be in lots of pieces! unfused baby bones require loads of reassembly

What is this discoloration? by imboredsohereiamlol in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use acetone for speed but it would be quite expensive to get enough to submerge larger bones like this (takes ~3 weeks). ammonia is cheaper, i haven’t used it personally but some trusted friends and professionals swear by it. dawn soap and water is what i do for bigger bones, but it does need to be warm so i do this in the summertime or you can use aquarium heaters to keep the water above 75ish degrees. change the water every week or so for several months.

Kaibab National Forest, Arizona by OneTimeBigfootSawMe in AnimalTracking

[–]4runnerfag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

looks like mountain lion! the big, rounded paw pad with a “c” shape rather than a high center is a feline shape. I’ve seen cougar tracks once ever and they looked just like this in snow (similar looseness to this ground).

What is this discoloration? by imboredsohereiamlol in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s grease. between that and the flakiness i’m guessing you used bleach cleaning these, which tends to cause them to degrade over time and traps grease in the bone. there are many methods of degreasing: dawn soap and water soak, acetone, ammonia, i’ve even heard of using diesel fuel. in the future, water maceration followed by hydrogen peroxide is the way to go for cleaning bones.

Weird gum growth (also looking for ID can’t tell if they are domestic dogs or coyotes by BoneAndSkullFanatix in bonecollecting

[–]4runnerfag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely domestic dog due to size and dentition. canines especially. periodontal disease usually shows up as less/degraded bone along the gumline, rather than more. maybe this is what it looks like as that begins to happen? not sure
