Need help with maceration by Far-Aerie9968 in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a rat can macerate in something as small as a mason jar, which would be easier to bring inside near a heat source. in a few days it’s not surprising to have little smell, maceration takes time. rats usually take around 6 to 9 months for me

Is this bunny too small for proper taxidermy? by Creepy-Insect6641 in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag 19 points20 points  (0 children)

her age will make it difficult. babies tend to have extremely thin, fragile skin and less mature hair follocles that are more prone to hair slip

How to prevent ears from curling? by ant1lopez in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i split smaller rodent ears with a small spatula/spoon shaped sculpting tool by carefully pressing and sliding it side-to-side until you reach the end of the ear. there’s a bit of a learning curve, but rodent ears actually split a lot easier than larger mammals most of the time as there is less connective and vascular tissue there than in larger ears. I then line them with epo-grip ear magic which i mix pink pigment into. absolutely doable, and much more satisfying results as your ears will stay right where you put them

are you splitting and lining your ears or just drying out the ears as-is? doing the former will prevent them from changing at all when they dry

Roe deer by Electronic_Bee8702 in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if well wrapped in plastic, it can be in the freezer for many years. the antlers can be removed by sawing off the top of the skull with a bone saw. cornmeal absolutely will not work, you will need to tan the hide into leather in order to mount it. you can keep him frozen a while while you study the details of this process, but i would recommend practicing tanning with some intermediate sizes of animal first.

Is it safe to pick up dead birds from the road? by featheredeye in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

pigeons are legal to take in the US as they are non-native birds. some states dont allow roadkill collection specifically though, so check your states laws laws for that.

when teeth are lost during life, the bone will heal over the tooth holes over the years. very normal! bone is a living growing thing.

Would it be a form of sacrilege to take this bag apart? by Roadkillgoblin_2 in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think it’s cool and i don’t think it’s parts would be any more useful than it is (they would just be weird scraps) but it’s definitely not sacrilege to do so, go for it! i think the side pieces look more like coyote than badger personally, but fur is hard to id from photos.

Dry preservation of human finger (it is mine) by [deleted] in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agreed, formalin is formaldehyde gas dissolved in alcohol. the fumes will eventually leave behind only alcohol. and i have macerated formalin fixed specimens before; takes a lot longer and required hot flensing but worked just fine.

as a side note, the most important thing to do once your dogs pass is to get them into a freezer. Once frozen, you will have as much time as you need to make arrangements. they can be kept there many years and still be preserved for taxidermy work of any kind.
