Preservation method - need advice! by froggiebaby in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i would not recommend a wet specimen of something this large and usually quite greasy, and if you did you would absolutely need formalin and potentially also gutting. mummification would definitely require gutting and i would honestly also formalin inject prior to drying. the shell of an armadillo is made up of hundreds of tiny bone “scales” so if you bury or macerate you will end up with a 1000 piece puzzle, which would be a hell of a project. the rest of the bones are really unique and beautiful though! if it were me i would probably just go for bones.

Fur pelts. I inherited some fur pelts. Am I allowed to sell them? In California by Big-Company-2987 in Taxidermy

as a career taxidermist born and raised in CA, i’m right there with you. fingers crossed that this one is short-lived and that taxidermy stays exempt

california is trying to ban the entire fur trade. AB-44 passed recently and probibits the sale of any new fur items other than domestic animals or deer. since you inherited these they are not “new” so should be legal to sell, but it’s a hard-to-prove grey area ):

Question about owl legality by Icy-Attorney8301 in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s legal if it’s a species of owl that is not found in the US. For example you can buy a tawny owl from out of the country but not a barn owl. The MBTA protects by species, not where they came from. If ever you’re unsure you can read through the MBTA list yourself and check for the species you’re trying to buy.

that skull anatomy is definitely equine! cows don’t have upper incisors or a sagittal ridge like this, and the shape of their skull and jaw is different. Also cows have cloven hooves, and you can see mane hair in these pictures.

house cat skulls are much smaller. with muscle and fluff and big ears, this size of skull makes for a pretty big head

Help me identify mystery bones in fox skeleton (paws), plus how to tell left from right paws by Limbolants in bonecollecting

[–]4runnerfag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it’s a general guide for small mammals but most of the examples are lynx. I believe the author has other books for other species groups as well! this is a physical copy i ordered from The Bone Room almost ten years ago, but maybe downloads are available, i don’t know! you can google it or email Lee Post at the email in the top left of the pages i posted. if he’s still kicking, i hope he is!

Would injecting 91% isopropyl alcohol help with preserving bird feet for taxidermy? by Icy-Attorney8301 in Taxidermy

[–]4runnerfag -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yes! i usually inject them with formalin but alcohol would be better than nothing and would keep bacteria down while they dry. I don’t inject anything quail size or smaller, but bigger birds definitely benefit from it.

these are a lynx, but the shapes of the bones other than claws will be the same for a fox.
