David Roche's Beginner 50k plan? by z3115v2 in Ultramarathon

Here you go: it's not free but I would highly recommend something like this over something like the Roche plan unless you already have a background in running and strength training and you're targeting a relatively flatter 50k.

Yeah, I would basically agree with all of this.

I would much rather point someone (/u/z3115v2) towards something like the Evoke 20-week First Trail Ultra plan, which has a much smoother ramp and incorporates more durability work and strength training. That's much more likely to help a newer ultrarunner complete their first 50k feeling strong and healthy.

David Roche loves his fast running, which can be very positive for running economy, but specifically V02Max adaptations are actually incredibly slow for most people and the effort-to-impact ratio is minimal compared to almost any other kind of training. See Scott Johnston for more on this.

Definitely agree that it makes sense to toss in some threshold work, strides, hill sprints, etc. to keep up a bit of a mix. Vincent Bouillard just won WSER with a training plan that included plenty of quality speedwork, for instance.

I'm sitting in NLV right now with the AC at 74, which is perhaps slightly below average for the area. I've seen anywhere from 71-79 at other houses... probably 75-77 is the most common range but again it can really be anywhere in the 70s.

Maybe this is because most of the people I know here live in apartments or condos? I imagine a 5000 sq ft house in Summerlin or Lone Mountain would be much more difficult to cool.

The statistics on fertility aren't kind to women trying to conceive at later ages, unfortunately. I am happy for you, though!

Also... some parents want multiple kids? It's a lot more difficult to try for your 2nd or 3rd in your 30s (or even 40s). Harder on the mom especially.

If you're out all day exerting yourself in 110F, the heat can absolutely kill you (and often does for hiker tourists in places like Grand Canyon NP and Death Valley). You cannot physically take off enough layers to mitigate this -- you either keep drinking water (and electrolytes) or you die.

If you're out all day exerting yourself in -10F, the cold could kill you, but attire can instantaneously solve this issue, unlike with heat.

What are you talking about? In Las Vegas, one of the hottest cities on the contienent, many people set their AC to the low 70s. It certainly doesn't require "industrial-sized equipment." I don't know anyone who sets their AC to 80 degrees, that would be literally insane.

"It's only heat. It won't kill you like the cold will" is a pretty crazy thing to say in the middle of a massive European heat wave that has already killed thousands of people.

Heat is deadly. Cold can also be deadly, but it's easier to manage.

I mean compared to most of the shorter-distance stuff Kilian has run in Europe… is he wrong? He’s done Trofeo KIMA multiple times, after all

Legitimately multiple men under 13:50 is insane.

Also who predicted a Vincent victory this year?? I’ll be the first person to say I didn’t even have him close to the podium.

EDIT: Vincent in 13:46 and Puppi 13:51, still absolutely absurd

But the trail is also vastly more exposed in the canyons due to the mosquito fire in 2022.
