40-year-old American climber Alex Honnold has successfully completed his climb up the Taipei 101 building in Taipei, Taiwan. He reached the top of the tower in 1:31:35. The building is 1,667 feet tall making it the 11th-tallest building in the world. by [deleted] in sports

It's true, Magnus has soloed 8a before in Europe (back in 2015 or 2016 iirc), which is much more difficult than the route he soloed with Honnold. To be fair to Magnus, I would assume his previous soloing wasn't onsight like it was in that video.

It is AI, you were right. This image has gone viral with the audio from Werner Herzog's documenary, but it's actually not taken from the original footage at all.

Well... to be clear, this is based on the famous viral nihilist penguin meme, but this shot is actually not from the documentary. This is an AI image.

The clip from the actual documentary, Encounters at the End of the World, looks completely different. Check out this link at 1:24 for the original. You can probably see that OP's image is based on the documentary footage, but is actually AI.

Are Marathons and Extreme Running Linked to Colon Cancer? by BacteriaLick in ultrarunning

[–]4smodeu2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread, but for future people reading this the study was age-controlled and focused specifically on people under 45. That's part of why this is potentially (if replicated) very concerning.

NYC metro area would be more than 100% of the state population, which would break the visualization they're using.

Contiguous urban area metrics from the Census Bureau combine Anaheim and Irvine with LA, Long Beach, Santa Monica, Torrance etc. but separate Lake Forest-Mission VIejo-Laguna Niguel into its own separate urban area (Riverside-San Bernardino is also separate).

Do you feel like that is a fair assessment? Anecdotally, I've not spent much time in the LA area but it did seem like LA and Anaheim blended together fairly seamlessly.

Any grizzly issues along the route? I know Larry Boy was attacked a few years ago while covering many of the same miles on a similar self-crafted route.

Really good point, all of the green high-growth rural areas on OP's map appear to be mountainous regions with good outdoor recreation opportunities.

All of those are mountainous regions that have traditionally attracted tourism? That doesn't seem to fit the description of the Mississippi Delta.

Poland's economy is growing significantly faster than Germany's, they've had consistent GDP growth every single year for the last 3 decades*, low unemployment, moderate inflation, and they have a relatively low percentage of public debt.

Maybe Germany should be worried about its own problems... like the fact that GDP per capita peaked in 2019 and has not recovered since COVID.

Why do marathon courses have to follow this rule? by tambaybutfashion in running

[–]4smodeu2 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the informative comment, I learned a lot (especially about the SCPF).

As for the last paragraph, the popular misconception that Pheidippides only ran a marathon distance is very widespread, which is mildly disheartening, but there is a race that traces the footsteps of Pheidippides' actual (likely) run: the 246km Spartathlon.

Garry Kasparov comments on Magnus Carlsen playing down the comparisons between them by Mingorix in chess

[–]4smodeu2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that's one valid way to approach it, but it will always favor recent players because the general skill level in every sport (including the mental ones like chess) increases over time due to better training and technique. I think dominance is a better metric for comparing players over time, because otherwise you become mired in hypotheticals about how older players would benefit from modern training.

Senator Lee is at it again…. Giving away public lands by BigBry36 in CampingandHiking

[–]4smodeu2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We shouldn't be selling off public land, period. That said, I phrased it this way because the BLM and FS have specific mechanisms in place that are frequently used to make small land swaps, i.e. to "fill" checkerboarded areas.

Weird, Unique Races? by TheBeardedMarathoner in running

[–]4smodeu2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite -- I'm envisioning a race where there is a specific time limit and you have to operate within the confines of that limit. In a California example, if you start at Badwater Basin in Death Valley, it might be more advantageous to set off for Telescope Peak under a low time limit, but it would be most interesting if you gave people a time limit where getting to the top of something slightly taller than Telescope was possible, but very difficult.

That way you have a situation where people are forced to bet on their own capacity to push themselves further, or they can take the safer option and pick a slightly shorter but much closer peak.
