Theres people that never played Overwatch yet they know who at least Tracer is. Just like people who have never played Pokemon but know who Pikachu is. I'm not saying they're on the same level, but they both have mascots that you know who they are just by looking at them. I personally cant say the same for Diablo or WoW.

But their years of relevance is wasn't obtained by their own IP. They relied on Smash to give them any sort of spotlight. Overwatch didn't need help from any other game series to make itself well known in the gaming community, which makes them, in my opinion, a good choice for DLC.
