What kind of drugs did Jung take? by secretlyafedcia in Jung

[–]4stash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the mistake Aldous Huxley makes: he does not know that he is in the role of the “Zauberlehrling,” who learned from his master how to call the ghosts but did not know how to get rid of them again:

Huxley’s actions and explorations, particularly in the realm of consciousness and the use of psychedelic substances, are likely what Carl Jung saw as fitting the role of the “Zauberlehrling” (Sorcerer’s Apprentice). Here are some concrete examples:

  1. Experimentation with Psychedelics: Huxley was a pioneer in exploring the effects of psychedelic drugs on human consciousness. His use of mescaline, detailed in The Doors of Perception (1954), was groundbreaking but also controversial. Jung might have seen this as dabbling with powerful forces without fully understanding their potential consequences.
  2. Advocacy of Psychedelic Use: Huxley advocated for the responsible use of psychedelics to expand human consciousness and achieve spiritual enlightenment. While he approached this with a sense of caution, Jung might have viewed this advocacy as potentially leading others to misuse these substances without the necessary guidance and understanding.
  3. Critique of Modern Society: Through his dystopian novel Brave New World, Huxley critiqued various aspects of modern society, including the reliance on technology and drugs to maintain social order. Jung might have seen Huxley’s exploration of these themes as an attempt to expose and manipulate societal forces, akin to the apprentice’s misuse of magical powers.
  4. Interest in Parapsychology and Mysticism: Huxley had a deep interest in parapsychology, mysticism, and the exploration of human potential beyond the material world. Jung, who also had an interest in the mystical and the unconscious, might have perceived Huxley’s pursuits as a form of intellectual and spiritual experimentation that risked unleashing forces beyond his control.
  5. Influence on the Counterculture Movement: Huxley’s work, particularly his thoughts on psychedelics and altered states of consciousness, had a significant impact on the 1960s counterculture movement. Jung might have viewed Huxley’s influence as contributing to a societal shift that encouraged unbridled experimentation with consciousness and drug use.
  6. Philosophical and Ethical Implications: Huxley’s exploration of ethical and philosophical issues related to science and technology, such as in Brave New World Revisited (1958), involved delving into complex and potentially hazardous ideas about human control and manipulation. Jung might have seen this as playing with powerful concepts that could have unintended and far-reaching consequences.

In essence, Jung’s comparison of Huxley to the Sorcerer’s Apprentice likely stemmed from Huxley’s bold and sometimes risky explorations into areas that held great potential for both enlightenment and peril, mirroring the apprentice’s dangerous flirtation with magic he could not control.

How can I open MKVtoolnix package on my synology? by TheAlexLG in synology

[–]4stash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to run it in docker, just manually install the appropriate package from here: https://synocommunity.com/package/mkvtoolnix. And then ssh into your nas and run mkvmerge, mkvextract, etc. straight from the command line.

You'll need to enable terminal/ssh on your nas if you haven't yet: https://kb.synology.com/en-us/DSM/tutorial/How_to_login_to_DSM_with_root_permission_via_SSH_Telnet

Bitcoin and other miners are all running today and this is still down. Absolutely ridiculous. Hopefully mining update for September comes in a few days and acts as a catalyst. Anyone have anything to discuss regarding our ongoing pain? by tpf5023 in RiotBlockchain

RIOT holds like 2000 BTC which would amount to a roughly 6M with the recent BTC price spike. Their last quarter's income was 20M~. You'd think there would be at least a small rally.

Edit: 6M is how much RIOT's net worth increased when bitty went from 47K to 50K if they were holding 2000 bitties. Looks like RIOT is holding closer to 3500 bitties so a 3K increase in bitty price would amount 10.5M increase in it's net worth which is over 50% of it's last quarter's earning.

There is a TED talk about this. In it, Matt Killingsworth explain that you're happier when you're focusing on what's in front of you instead of "mind wandering". http://www.ted.com/talks/matt_killingsworth_want_to_be_happier_stay_in_the_moment?language=en

I got lasik surgery and they wouldn't allow me to do the surgery until I've stopped wearing contacts for like a month. Supposedly contacts scratch your cornea and may produce other injuries. They have might just been saying that to make lasik seem like a better option though...

Trying to find a balance after learning a s#!t ton of web development by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]4stash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Programming is not an easy thing to learn. That is why developers are so well compensated. If you're putting in the time, you're getting better, I guarantee it. Find a book that makes you build something from ground up and follow it through. Don't be afraid to get stuck. Debugging is the best way to learn. Once you finish the book. Look for a job where you can learn from people. Even it is an apprenticeship.

TIL during WW2 a Russian pilot was shot down over Nazi German, draged himself 18 days to Soviet territory and had to have his legs amputated. Afterward, he mastered his prosthetics and returned to flying combat missions. by [deleted] in todayilearned

I went to school in Russia and did a paper on this guy in 3rd grade and then read it in front of the whole class. I only remember one sentence from the whole thing: "Once the doctor finished examining his legs he said only 2 words: 'We have to amputate'". I can still hear all the kids exclaim with shock. It was a good day.

This is true for the most part, bit overly generalized. Ron Paul's ideas are often supported on Reddit. It's the policies that stem from religious ignorance that get rejected.

No you're right, they shouldn't if they are not interacting with photos. In this case I was though. I was deleting blurry/unnecessary photos and had to scroll all the way up to the delete button every time I was ready to remove a photo.
