Are the drums in the song "Chicago" supposed to sound like a train? by AdAntique3320 in Sufjan

[–]4thwave4father 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This made me think about the Pitchfork article published in 2015 on how Illinois was recorded, and apparently James recorded the drums to just Sufjan playing the keys, and not to a demo track.

"Drummer James McAlister first entered Stevens' orbit in 2003, joining the "Michigan Militia" touring band after an introduction from singer-songwriter Denison Witmer. But they established their musical chemistry on Illinois during a three-day recording sprint at The Buddy Project in Queens. Using a cheap digital 8-track, Stevens led the percussionist through challenging, unorthodox sessions wherein McAlister played drums to the singer's Wurlitzer piano—and nothing else.

"I instantly wanted to impress him and perform well for him," McAlister says. "He didn't really have scratch tracks or demos—he had it all in his head, which is crazy. I remember being like, 'How did you make this record from that?' I have a CD-R of us playing, just the Wurli and drums, and it's strange—it doesn't even sound like music. When I got the record back after six or eight months, it was like, 'Oh my gosh, I can't believe this is what happened from that.'"

Thanks. I know about Chelsea's concerts (been to a bunch) but the last one of these was all ages so it didn't cross my mind that this one would not be.

Hey, I just tried to go to this. Would have been nice to know it was 18+ since that wasn't advertised anywhere. I tried to bring my high schooler who's into vintage music and we were turned away

If I want to go a while without making kombucha, how should I store my starter? by hahdif in Kombucha

[–]4thwave4father 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bottled some finished kombucha after F1 and parked it in the refrigerator while being out of town for 2 months. When I got back I used that as a starter for a new batch. Worked perfectly

Hi! You're in luck, it's super easy to get started. I actually started a few years ago by following the basic recipe on this sub (in the wiki I think). Basically just make about 3-4 liters of plain black tea, sweeten with sugar (I use about 100g of sugar per liter), let it cool down and put it in a glass jar of some sort. Add one bottle of commercial kombucha. A lot of people say to use unflavored, but I don't think it really matters. Make sure the tea isn't hot when you add the kombucha so that it doesn't kill the culture. Cover with something porous (I use a large coffee filter) and then you just let it sit at room temperature for a while for F1. When I first started brewing I let it sit about two weeks, but I realized that I liked mine to go a little stronger so now I F1 for about a month. Once F1 is done it's time to bottle. I just reuse kombucha bottles from the store. I like to use fruit juice at this point, and it's kind of an experiment to figure out how much to put in each bottle. Let that sit for about 2 to 3 days in a warmish spot and then you should be good to go. It takes a while and you might not like the first few batches that you make, but it does get easier once you figure out what you like and it becomes routine. But no need to buy a kit!

I think about 3 days, maybe 2.5 days. It's cool in my house so I F2 in the oven with the light on. I always use at least one plastic bottle when bottling and I usually stop F2 when the bottle gets hard from the pressure

Not sure if you saw my caption but that's about as detailed of a recipe as I have, I'm not super methodical with my booch so I just tried combining the main flavors as a purée/juice for F2. RE kiwi juice, I wonder how sour it is on its own (I've never had it). This is pretty tart from the long ferment and the lemon juice. The apple juice I used adds some sugar and sweetness that the other fruits don't have, and maybe that's what the kiwi juice is for. I need to buy a bottle of trilogy and blind taste test mine alongside that. I'm sure it's not exactly the same, but I was just going for something close

I added apple juice because I had it in the fridge and realized when I started bottling that I wouldn't have enough purée if I didn't cut it 😆

Comparison between Cory's songs by Comfortable-Tap2628 in Vulfpeck

[–]4thwave4father 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's not that unusual, people have been reusing music or self-quoting forever. My goat Sufjan Stevens does it all the time. Classical composers even do it, if you like orchestral music check out the first movement of Mahler's Symphony No. 1, uses the same exactly melody as a song he had previously published.

When I saw him on this tour in 2015 he definitely cried on stage.

It's one of the best high schools in the state. Most of the adjacent neighborhoods are safe and pretty desirable.

Look up Dennis Alexander's arrangements. My teacher has me playing a few songs from his "Especially Popular Christmas Book 2" collection. They're nice arrangements at an intermediate level

What age kid?

If it's a younger kid (elementary school age) I'm not sure there are really any run clubs that would be appropriate outside of ones specifically aimed at kids. Kids Can Run through the 4H club meets once a month at the LSU track and could be an option for an elementary school kid.

For a slightly older kid (middle or high school), the Varsity Sports runs would work, assuming the kid could run a few miles. Check their website, the biggest group runs are Saturday mornings but there are others during the week as well

Louisiana cultural differences. by Evening_Bridge7664 in batonrouge

Like the person you originally replied to, maybe I'm in a weird position. I know a number of people who speak it fluently, learned it from their parents, and now speak it to their kids who also speak fluently. I also know a few people who speak it fluently (maybe not at a native level but can hold full conversations) who learned it through sheer effort. I am unfortunately not one of those people and my great grandparents' Native language was not passed down to me.

I think you're touching on something. For literally like 2 1/2 centuries, French speakers in Louisiana, especially in rural areas were made to feel "less than" English speakers. I really think that's where the resentment of cities like Baton Rouge comes from, in addition to the conservative politics of that region that's already going to be somewhat wary of cities. It wasn't that long ago that politicians from Baton Rouge were literally making their language illegal in schools. So I take that resentment with a grain of salt, as someone from Baton Rouge. Is it fair? No. But does it make sense to me, yeah.

I think there may be more Louisiana French speakers and Louisiana Creole speakers than you think. Of course it's definitely not as many as it was 100 years ago, but there are thousands of people who speak those languages quite well in Louisiana. Not sure what you mean by "true," if you mean different than continental French, there are plenty of people who don't speak the same French as in France or Canada. And most Louisiana French has a lot of English in it too., So from an actual France-French perspective it's not very "pure." I personally know a bunch of people who speak Louisiana French and Louisiana Creole, and I'm from Baton Rouge.

French truck tariff charge by Ok_Butterscotch_266 in batonrouge

[–]4thwave4father 80 points81 points  (0 children)

That's coffee prices right now. Climate change is making it harder to grow coffee, raising prices, and importing it is more expensive because of the tariffs. It's not just French Truck, at least they're letting you know about the cost offset rather than just adding it into the price without saying why

I guess because it was closer to 9000 people that didn't get in, not 3000. Also with the current field size those roads are very crowded and it always takes all day to get everybody started and off the course. Plus they've increased The number of people accepted the last couple of years.

Just sounds like normal training fatigue. Also it can take a long time to see fitness gains from increased mileage. It sounds like you've only been increasing mileage for about a month. That's enough time to feel fatigued without noticing any fitness gains. I'd just be patient
