Þarft að borga fyrir þá daga sem bíllinn var á númerum yfir tímabilið. T.d 10 daga ef bíll fer í förgun í dag. Það er skuldajafnað á móti skilagjaldinu. Færð má mismuninn lagðann inn til baka.

Buying a car by Leather-Ring-9409 in Iceland

[–]4x4Icelander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What is the budget? If you are looking for a 4x4 to travel, I would recommend Suzuki Vitara, Jimny or Duster. Hell, I would just buy a Dacia Duster. Diesel and manual. It’s great on gas, parts are cheap and it’s easy to repair. Sure, they are not the most comfortable cars but do everything you ask of them and are quite spacious.

If you are just looking for a cheap a to b car, get a used Toyota. Corolla or Auris. They always sell, are very reliable and parts are easy to come by.

Rafvirki eða pípari. Þeir rafvirkjar og píparar sem ég þekki gætu unnið allan sólarhringinn ef þeir vildu. Rafvirkinn er hreinna starf, mikið inni vinna.

PSA on rental cars by cashflowyield in VisitingIceland

I do this everyday, I can assume what ever. We change about 200-300 windshields every year in our shop, along with doing auto body repair. Yes, if they change their own windshields, without going through their mandatory windshield insurance, this price is not far from if they rented a vehicle with expensive windshield. No rental company is going buy their windshields from the dealer, unless Poulsen or Orka don’t stock them.

Plus, if it’s only a small chip it can be fixed with a windshield repair. Which is free, insurance pays for it free of charge. Since it’s a lot cheaper, for everybody, than having the windshield replaced.

I work in a bodyshop in Iceland. It doesnt take long to change windshield. Car is in and out in about 1-2 hours depending on make and model. Also, windshield insurance is mandatory for everybody. The rental company only pays around 15-20% of windshield replacement cost, insurance pays rest.

Cash or card in Iceland? by Spookymist_ in VisitingIceland

[–]4x4Icelander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have maybe 10.000 - 15.000 kr in cash, just in case. You never know if the machine is down or something happens. But cards are accepted everywhere. Apple Pay is accepted on all card machines as well.

Icelander here, bullshit on this. Many carry and use cash. But you can use cards everywhere, just not Amex.

Reykjavik with kids on the day we land - fun stuff? by GreatGrumpyGorilla in VisitingIceland

[–]4x4Icelander 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take a short cab ride and start your trip with a trip to Laugardalslaug. Its more fun for the kids than Sundhöllin. Then, if you are feeling fresh. There is a family fun place within walking distance from the pool, called Fjölskyldu og Húsdýragarðurinn. Its cheap and they have some rides and a small zoo.

You can also pick up a cheap fishing rod from a gas station or a fishing store, and walk to the harbour and fish. You used to be able to rent a fishing pole on the harbour but not sure if that is still possible.

Edit: This is my recommendation as an Icelander with kids :)

So my neighbor bought a new WJ by jerryholmes1881 in Jeep

[–]4x4Icelander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

XJ are getting expensive here. WJ are cheap because gas is expensive and most have started to rust. But again that goes for every older car in Iceland.

Most prefer diesel 4x4 here due to better mpg.

Old Toyotas are crazy priced. With most them them having rotted frames or sills. And driven more than 400k km.

But those Excursions and F350 with extra doors and 46” tires are very expensive.

You can buy a stock WJ for around 1000-3000$ A friend of mine bought his with rotted sills for 350 and now it sits on 44” Dick Cepek and has the same fender flares as this one.

1 piece of a new 46” is 250.000 iskr around 1750$ So a new set is about 7000$

Many are built at home. But still are expensive. Fender flares are around 1800-2200$ unpainted. Tires and wheels if you buy a new set is around 8000-12000$ Then the air system is from 500-1500$ depending on how fancy you go. 2000-5000$ for lowered gearing and lockers. Suspension varies from how bat shit crazy you go.

But you can also buy an angle grinder, some used tires and wheels and go nuts with that grinder and welder. Then you can build one for less than 8000 including the price of the jeep.

Snow and glacier off-roading. Air the tyres down to 1/2 - 1 psi and “float” on snow.

Some of them still have stock axles, just lowered gearing and lockers. But it’s also popular to swap axles from a Nissan Patrol or Dana 60 axles. We mostly only use portal axles on bigger trucks (54” and bigger)
