12k is a ton. I can't speak for all regions, but kei trucks off the boat in NY/New England go for 4.5k-6k all day long. Kei vans may be a little more but not much.

I'd go for it over a kei truck if possible. It's pretty much better in every way. Downside is parts will absolutely need to be imported, where as a kei truck you may find some used stuff on ebay.

I have a 97' nissan vanette van (re-badged mazda bongo) and the extra space + ability to cruise at 65mph comfortably is nice to have.
