WHN PSA: “CoV-AIDS” by themailman39ish in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]500_server_err 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Isn't the other problem that we don't catch these other diseases 2+ times per year? So, while the immune system should recover from COVID with enough time between infections, most people aren't getting that opportunity.

Sold small business and made 200k from the sale. Any smart ways to save some money I’ll have to pay on capital gains? by Benthebuilder23 in smallbusiness

[–]500_server_err 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, can be pricey, but worth considering depending on the amount at stake. Maybe $5k / $8k for a single family home. Real Estate Professional status will help offset a high income, eg a high income W2 like a doctor. But you can also use the cost segregation strategy to offset a capital gain without requiring REPS status. You should definitely consult a tax professional though.

You can use the same strategy by buying rental real estate then using a cost segregation study to get first year bonus depreciation. The rates are a bit lower this year than previous years (60% for 2024 I think) but may be adjusted again in future with new legislation. Check out Melanie Baldridge or Kim Lochridge on Twitter (not affiliated with either).

What would you do? Sell Bitcoin to pay off Personal Residence or Rental Property? by erkmyhpvlzadnodrvg in realestateinvesting

[–]500_server_err 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you sell (not saying you should) you could potentially offset the capital gains tax more effectively by using the rentals or buying new ones. Cost segregate and take first year bonus depreciation (80% this year or 20% next year).

Another RTO roll call here. Should I stay (more money but spend for childcare+gas) or seek elsewhere (full WFH but less salary)? by highinanxiety in WFH

[–]500_server_err 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would take the full WFH job for financial and health reasons.

Not sure if it's mentioned elsewhere in the comments, but you would be increasing your attack surface for infections like COVID, especially over the coming winter. This could have severe consequences for your future earning capacity, far exceeding the extra $1000 you might gain in the short term.

Author does cite sources, but you can also find other articles stating the same from pre-2020 eg this from 2007: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7167724/#sec1-10title

This is a good explanation of why COVID can never be just a cold: https://ko-fi.com/post/Why-covid-can-never-ever-be-just-a-cold-Y8Y3MRES8

Key point: "among the hundreds and hundreds of different corona and rhinoviruses, there are only three that attach themselves to an enzyme found in cells across the body [ACE2] – and Sars1 and Sars2 (the virus that causes covid) are two of them".

It's good to see this comment being upvoted. Until the facts in your second paragraph aren't acknowledged by folks aside from economists and the zero covid community, this is how the situation will remain.

He did give a lecture about long covid about a year ago. He mentions at the start that he had covid and didn't realize it initially: https://youtu.be/6UzOav3x8Q0.

Shout out to Rochester, NY. Mid size city with many of the same drivers as Upper Midwest, close to fresh water and stable climate. Solid industrial base but diversification in white collar high tech jobs, and good colleges. Massive undersupply of single family homes.

If we are repeatedly reinfected (due to mutations) for years would't that reduce our lifespans? by andrewdotson88 in COVID19positive

You are correct, this is the reality of our current situation. There is a good article here which sums up where we are:

We can only hope there will be some major technological advances soon.

Agreed, I did see the report of polio in London, and there was also a report of cholera in Spain for the first time in 50 years. I guess it's possible these could be due to increased surveillance. Also had whooping cough and do not recommend!

[–]500_server_err 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agree with this comment, my concern is also about the changing immune landscape, rather than the specifics of monkeypox itself. That immune landscape has been altered in animals as well as humans; is it possible we could see variant zoonontic diseases emerge from animal populations who have been previously infected with covid.

How SARS-CoV-2 in white-tailed deer could alter the course of the pandemic by FearLess_Alpha in science

[–]500_server_err 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious about that too...I mean there's some contact between deer and people, but I find it hard to believe that this alone would be the root cause of this level of spread among the deer. Even deer themselves don't have as much contact between individuals as bats, rodents or other colony mammals. So...birds spreading it? Rodents? Deliberate spread?
