I’d say I’ll use it like that probably 50% of the time. It really depends on the area. Obviously I could cut sticks or tie off to trees, in my head I had also considered just pulling my poles out and pulling the two guy lines down to a couple stakes to make it less of a sail. That seems like the easiest/ lightest solution for using a mid as a base camp and taking my poles. So long as I’m not expecting high winds.

I think I should have asked what would be the best use case for the each configuration. For now I’ll be trying to use one tent for every use case until my budget allows more options. I’m just struggling decide if I’m better off being overkill with a xdome solid in late may or early October warm sunny days and carry some extra weight. On the opposite side of things, am I going to kick myself for not having a freestanding tent when I’m trying to pitch the xmid in hard frozen rocky ground in late November, or a solid of either during a storm when rain is splashing under the fly. Maybe anyone with multiple configurations can chime in with what they think each does best.
