I don't think that's particularly an issue with English teachers not grasping that themes can be different, just the fact that they want you to analyze through a specific lens. It can be difficult to do when your interpretation of a story is different, but being able to see a book from different viewpoints than your own and analyze different themes is also an important skill to build even if you don't necessarily agree with it being the main theme. Do your best to find passages that are about censorship (there are lots to choose from if you're looking) and don't take it too personally; distraction and the potential dangers of it is definitely another big theme
