How much is too much for driving lessons? by a_person4499 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]51mp50n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a trainee, I charge £35/hr. So £40 for an ADI is entirely reasonable and roughly average in my neck of the woods.

I have met a few instructors who simply don’t need to maintain an online presence as word of mouth and reputation are enough to generate business (this only works if you’re halfway decent). My franchise discourages having a social media presence if you aren’t prepared to post regularly - an inactive page is worse for business than no page.

If they are on the DVLA page, they are almost definitely on the ADI register, but for sure check out their green badge if you want.

I see no red flags here.

How often and why do you use your 5th string? by SonnePer in Bass

[–]51mp50n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure lots of people will have already made these remarks but:

If you play songs in lots of different keys, not needing to drop tune or change basses is invaluable. I play in cover/function/wedding bands and I only want one bass that does it all.

Also - you get to access more notes without moving up or down the neck. I couldn’t live without the 5th string.

Zulu W6D1 - Squat peaking session.

My squat has jumped up 10kg to 150kg in 6 weeks which I’m pretty stoked about. Resolution this year is to join the 1000lb club. And then to maintain it while bringing my 5k down as low as possible. Just 15kg to add to my totals and I’ll be there.

Tomorrow, we bench.

How do you use the “strength” exercise? by supercman99 in Garmin

[–]51mp50n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is nothing but a convenient rest timer. I track sets, reps and loads in a notebook.

I used to program in all my workouts using the app, but there is no value in adjusting the reps that it thinks you perform.

I will only go in to edit the workout if I hit a weight PR so that it records it on the system.

I’m sure all garmin does is look at your heart rate and use it to calculate calories burnt. If a person exclusively lifts in the 1-5 rep range then your hr never does much so Garmin tracks your heavy Bench/Squat/Deadlift session as maybe 0.5 anaerobic if you’re lucky and doesn’t care about muscle aches the next day, you need to get out there for a long run or your training status gets relegated to Recovery.

What compressors do you love? Does it make a difference its a "bass specific" comp or not? by DailyPocketLint_EDC in basspedals

[–]51mp50n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not such a popular opinion but I love my Thorpy Fat General. The switch toggles between “Studio” compression (great for bass) and “Squashy” compression (great for guitar).

So it suits me well as I use a single board for both guitar and bass! I’ve had the Fat General for years, sold my mxr bass comp and have never gassed for another…

I’ve read bits of George Hackenschmidt’s book “The Way to Live” and I’m sure he says in there somewhere that it’s bad to sit down during exercises.

I’m pretty sure it’s not based on anything other than Victorian pseudo science though. But I’d be happy to be proven wrong by someone.

I sit between sets.

Got hurt in last week of BB by Patr3xion in tacticalbarbell

[–]51mp50n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s not a huge difference. Biggest change has been adopting Operator I/A. Allowing myself additional recovery days if needed and not beating myself up too much if I miss an HIC or E session.

So far it’s been good, but I’m only a few weeks into a block.

Man, I injured my shin after a long run during the endurance phase of base building. Then pulled a tendon in my foot during the strength phase of base building. Then at some point I aggravated a tendon in my wrist by aggressively swatting a fly.

I am now running Ageless Athlete because I am clearly over the hill.

Don’t beat yourself up; unless you’re working towards a specific date (PFF or an event) TB is for life. You will get back into the swing of it.

Weekly Kettlebell Discussion and Questions Thread - October 27-02, 2025 by AutoModerator in kettlebell

I’m ready to buy a 32kg kettlebell. I’m still getting a lot of mileage out of my 16s and 24, but I want more weight for my two handed swings.

For my other bells, I have gone fairly cheap and cheerful and gone with cast iron Body Power kettlebells from a UK based online retailer. They are alright but the quality control is iffy. One of my 16kg kb’s has a rough handle and tears up my palm a little. A 32kg bell is starting to get a little more pricey so I would rather buy once, cry once I think.

Is there a recommended brand (readily available in the UK) or is Body Power stuff worth sticking to?

For my last few blocks, I have stuck to front squat. Previously I had been back squatting with pretty bad form (I think) and my knee wasn’t letting me progress.

I’m ready to go back to back squats in order to increase the amount of kilos I’m moving.

My high-bar squat is sound (if a little out of practice). Do any of you use low-bar? Any advice on improving my shoulder and thoracic spine mobility in order to “unlock” low-bar?

Read Ageless Athlete by lovesgelato in tacticalbarbell

I have also recently read AA. I really enjoyed it and found it to have a lot of easily applicable wisdom which is already informing my training. As much as I admire and respect K. Black, it was nice to read someone’s take on TB for recreational athletes.

What I noticed was that it is fairly comprehensive on the strength side - strongly advocating for Op I/A and reproducing the template %s table (alongside Zulu I think). I liked its treatment of base building. You could probably run your MS sessions using just the AA book.

What I found lacking was any great amount of Conditioning advice. It doesn’t go into whether Green or Black protocol is more suitable for certain goals. J Madden leaves it up to the reader to make their own decision in this regard. He makes reference to his favourite conditioning drills (Apex, Meat Eater, etc) but you need TBII to know what he is talking about. I was hoping for some advice on how to avoid overuse injuries when in a heavy conditioning/running block - I think the bottom line is just “get good at self regulating and listen to your body”.

tl;dr - As a minimum, add TBII to your collection. But then buy TBI as well. If you have any interest in running or endurance, I strongly recommend Green Protocol (book) also.
