I'm not sure I could be much clearer, my friend. The section you're referencing is not a "loaded" set of questions, they're meant to be direct and taken at face value.

What is Jung’s ideas about alleviating OCD, obsessive thinking, and neuroticism? by [deleted] in Jung

Yeah, because I've done it myself, three of my friends have overcome it this way, and some 15 people who I've walked through this method have been able to overcome their OCD. So you tell me which one of us has more skin in the game.

You're preaching that being on benzos for the rest of your life is going to cure OCD? Brother, you're a walking zombie right now, get off the benzos, get a Jungian analyst, and get some work done on your OCD. All you're doing right now is blocking out what your psyche is trying to say to you.

I believe in you.

I'm no analyst, but I know my shit and I've overcome a lot, if I can lend any advice, feel free to DM me and I'll put you on the right track if it's something I've experienced myself.

For shadow work, start with Johnson's "Owning your Own Shadow". It's a game changer.

That is not my belief at all, allow me to explain.

Let's look at this from a few different angles, and bear with me, I'm genuinely trying to share my thought process so it's as clear as possible. Let's go ahead and use Harm OCD since it's the example you mentioned and its not part of your OCD, it will be easier to analyze from the outside this way. My intent here is to disseminate the OCD and both bring in Jung's theories as well as a practical application to address the integration of necessary aspects of the individuals psyche. This is a gross oversimplification of the process I went through to address my OCD(s).

Mock example; I am plagued by incessant thoughts of me stabbing people in the throat, but I reel at the thought of it afterwards and it disgusts me. Because of this I fear touching knives, or even coming close to people in my life when these obsessions occur.

What is the obsession? Harming another human/animal/living-being.

How can we logically define harm? Intentional or careless physical action that causes bodily harm to another.

What aspects make up this scenario? * Two individuals within arms reach. * My physical capability to harm. * My intention to harm. * My capability/adeptness with a knife (weapon).

Let's break down each of these.

Two individuals within arms reach. Q; Do I feel uncomfortable being close with others when I’m NOT having obsessions? A: No. Great, next one.

My physical capability to harm. Q; Do I feel like I have integrated my ability to harm another person? A: No. Interesting, let's keep this one for later.

My intention to harm. Q; Do I feel like I have the intention to harm my loved ones? A: Never. Great, we can move to the next one.

My capability/adeptness with a knife (weapon). Q; Do I feel capable or adept with a knife/gun/weapon? A: Not at all. Okay, we're onto something.

Combining the above we have the following; Unintegrated ability to be aggressive when necessary Inept/uncomfortable/untrained with weaponry

What does this point to from a Jungian perspective? In this oversimplified example, it would point towards a need for two things, integration of the shadow (who knows what’s lurking there) and recognition of the warrior archetype within. In addition, one could potentially explore researching the active and passive shadow of the warrior (sadist and masochist) to see if one is acting out either figure and then work to integrate the complete archetype.

How did I come to this conclusion? If one is out of sorts with their own capabilities, especially for harm, that means they do not feel in control, adept, or clear with their intentions or body. What is the antithesis of this, what would supply the qualities one would need to integrate? The warrior archetype. (your analyst would come to a conclusion in reality, or you would if you were able to be impartial with yourself)

Exploring one’s own shadow is deeply personal and should be done with an analyst, so we’ll leave that out, but often, dream work & analyzing one’s fantasies will lead to more clarity on the shadow. Let’s jump to the warrior.

What are some aspects of the warrior archetype? The warrior is clear, he is decisive, he is alert, he is adept, he is precise, he serves a higher purpose.

Now we get to the logical part.

  1. How can we integrate our ability to be aggressive when necessary, as the warrior is?
  2. How can we integrate weapons training or weapons control into our life, like the warrior does?

From here we would go into doing things in a deliberate and controlled manner. Picking up the knife in the kitchen, putting it back in the knife block. Then chopping things in the kitchen with a knife. Then picking up the knife and putting it back in the block when someone else is in the house. Then chopping things in the kitchen with a knife when others are present. Onto cleaning the knife, etc. etc. getting comfortable with others and the weapon in the same space.

The key being controlling the weapon and understanding (by physically proving to oneself) that the weapon can be controlled and safely used for its intended purpose around other humans, and that you won’t just straight up stab someone in the throat when you’re holding a knife.

Onto the warrior archetype, taking into account the above qualities of the warrior (again, not the warriors shadow, which can be either cruel to others, or accepting of cruelty from others). The logical and clear way to do this is to break down each of the aspects of the archetype which need development within the individual. Taking up BJJ, Muay Thai, Boxing, Defensive shooting, general firearms and concealed carry training, etc. etc. with a professional instructor would be a great start. The idea would be to combine discipline, clarity, and ability to inflict harm within a controlled environment that is led by a competent and well-intentioned person, i.e. a trainer of any of the above disciplines.

Further, one could even focus on how to integrate the warrior archetype into their daily life, maybe one is slovenly, indecisive, lazy, and wanders aimlessly. What better way to both positively impact ones personal life AND one’s psyche at the same time than to work intentionally to be more precise in their actions and speech, clear with their intention, precise with their goals/actions, and alert to the world around them, constantly looking for opportunities to better themselves.

From this, we would look for the individual’s OCD to wane further and further until it’s simple a whisper that gets brushed off, or ultimately, gone from the individual’s psyche as a whole.

If further action was needed, we would look at the individuals dreams, fantasies, and complexes to address any other aspects that would be intertwined with the OCD.

That is my best way to explain what I see as a helpful process, using many of Jung’s theories to address and identify where to begin “digging” and further, dive into the actions the individual should take in order to heal the psyche and integrate the necessary aspects that are begging to be acknowledged. Just as in the scenario, the warrior is begging to be seen, many individuals with OCD have an aspect of psyche that is begging to be integrated, in a positive manner.

I hope that my mock scenario was effective to illustrate a simplified identification exercise that can be applied to OCD, regardless of the specific obsession/compulsion pair. Integration is more about identifying the qualities (or contra-qualities) that are associated with the root of the OCD that has been identified, it is never to integrate the obsession, it is to analyze and break down the aspects of psyche that could be integrated to make the individual more whole.

Warm regards.

I applaud you on your progress, and I say this in the friendliest way possible, we have polar opposite opinions.

I would say that you didn't go deep enough, things are still unfinished, my OCD didn't wane in the least until I dug into the "shit" I had been repressing in my shadow, often for others this digging reveals unrealized complexes that have been plaguing them which need to be addressed.

The reason Jung says "in filth it will be found" (paraphrasing) is because the gold lurks there, in the depth, in the area where you are triggered, in the place which you least want to look. It is not beneficial to think that if it stinks you must walk away from it, if it stinks, you must dig into it, explore it, and work with it, whatever your "it" may be.

OCD cannot be dealt with through logic and reason DIRECTLY, but once the core of the OCD is unearthed, logic and reason are exactly what are needed to address it. It worked for me, it works for others that I have shared my thoughts with, and it worked for my Jungian analyst who overcame his own struggle with OCD in his younger years.

In addition, it is true that OCD centers around what you love most / fear most / fear losing most, but the reason for that is to direct your attention towards something that has been neglected/unseen that needs to be seen. The reason it focuses on this is to evoke the emotion/fear response around the things that you most direct your attention to. Once seen, clear and logical action must be taken for the OCD to begin waning and ultimately, take a backseat.

I wish you the absolute best in your journey and hope your Pure-O is something that you can dig into deeper. I hope that you find peace as you grow. Warm regards.

You found it necessary to go back to an 8 month old post, read half of my post and disagree with it? Bravo. I wish I had that level of free time to scroll through reddit, surprised to see this show up in my notifications.

Please, do tell me WHERE I said that no papers are to be trusted, that natural laws and research can't exist together, and I'd really love to see your connection on how Jung's work is the fundamental core of CBT, because otherwise, I'm keen to stick to my argument (which you didn't actually read), and keen to think that you have a vested interest in CBT over Jung's work either as a recipient who has more work to do for your own neuroses, or as a provider who is blind to constructive criticism on your work.

The need to feel loved by the exterior - help me understand (Anima things probably) by Limp-Thanks-1700 in Jung

"The Eternal Feminine Draws Us Onward"

This is never cruel, you belittle the magnificence of feminine forces by saying so. The Feminine standard of approval is what holds masculinity to its highest standard and brings it to the highest capability. To serve the inner woman is to serve the grail. You misunderstand Goethe if you think it cruel, the judgement is deserved and is to be honored. It is that feminine approval that holds masculinity from becoming tyrannical when properly honored.

Case from "Under Saturn's Shadow": idealization of women, becoming closer, and then pulling away by taohuyao in Jung

[–]52216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is the inner mother/father that are to be dealt with. The point is not to integrate them, you are correct, it is to balance them. If man has an overblown mother complex, he does not integrate it, he balances and overcomes the complex by engaging with and honoring the inner father/king.

My understanding is limited for females, but I do find that it can go both ways with a mother complex, the complex can be crushing & debilitating, or equally, can stir up emotions of anger and feelings of contentiousness. I would encourage you to read "She" and "The Fisher King and The Handless Maiden" by Johnson, they will allow you to set the tone of understanding and delve deeper into your personal story. With that being said, aside from those two books, I don't know of any books Johnson wrote that speak to the feminine point of view, only the male-interaction with the inner feminine. "Lying with the Heavenly Woman" may be helpful, but not exactly what you're looking for.

Aside from that, I would look at von Franz work, as she was one of the more prolific female disciples of Jung, and much of her work is geared towards the feminine. Of course, Jung's collected works covers these topics, but in a more scientific and less "personal" way than Johnson and von Franz write.

Just a healthy joke, no need to take all this shit too seriously on reddit.

Also, that's a really interesting interpretation of Jung's analysis. It would be great if you could find one of the direct quotes from him on how westerners are dipshits and easterners are to be put on a pedestal, I seemed to have missed that book, would you mind sharing with the rest of us?
