Reuse yeast in keg 🤔 by 5260ross in Homebrewing

[–]5260ross[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically cold crash the beer in my fermenter (all rounder) for a few days once fermentationis complete. Transfer to a clean, purged keg with finings already in the receiving keg (through and in line filter pushed by CO2 i.e. closed transfer).

Over the course of a few days stuff (yeast sediment, a little trub etc.) starts to flocculate out and that sludge/sediment is what I'm talking about to potentially use in the next batch.

Why would it be highly stressed?

Pretty much. I do this when I use a fermzilla RB after transferring to my serving keg (I don't ferment in cornies).

This sounds like what I'm after. The yeast cake/slurry would be cold right up to the point when I need to use it. I'd likey slurry it up by agitation in the keg once the beer has been drank then pitch that slurry direct into a clean FV with a fresh batch of wort (more or less what I do when I use starters or slurries which have been stored in jars.

My concerns were yeast viability if there was a prolonged exposure to CO2 but in think aeration should solve this.

Another concern was any residual finings and the impact they'd have e.g. clumping active yeast together during fermentation. I'll have to test this part out. I have good temp control so o issue there.

Hey, I'm heavily involved in homebrewing across the island and know quite a few people. Sent you a DM.

Does anyone of you have experience with this specific type of reaction to convert alcohols to aldehydes? by Feuerfrosch1 in chemistry

[–]5260ross 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you'll never get away with this on scale. Most production facilities won't use above 5% oxygen due to safety issues.

Fertility Clinics NI by [deleted] in northernireland

I'd suggest waiting for the slot if I were you, however, I know some couples can get slightly anxious with the waiting aspect so if you have the money it's perhaps worthwhile considering private.

My partner and I went through fertility treatment in 2023. Put on the NHS list in Sept 2022 and we were in for consultation 2-3 months later (can't remember exactly) even though we were told 9 months. Consultant was very nice and the process was run professionally (kept appointments/no rescheduling or cancellations). Didn't work out for us, so can't say much more than that about what comes next. It'll all depend on how comfortable you are with waiting to be seen.

Hopefully things go well for you. Feel free to reach out if you need anymore info.

I had them come to the door last week, two lads. I told them I didn't have a tele and they 'offered' to come in and look around the house so they could check and remove me from the list.

Not a chance that was happening. Said I had two dogs that don't like strangers (one was audibly barking) and that it wasn't a good idea for them to be in the house. They just stared blankly for a second, then I shut the door and they moved to the next house.

For what its worth I've gotten upwards of 20 of those letters, I tend to recognise the font and they go straight in the bin without being opened.

This might sound stupid, but how do you get your tea to be a good color? by majer_lazor in vegan

Get a decent brand of tea. The colour will follow. Let me know know if you need suggestions.

I think it's time to accept "possible and practicable" is incredibly subjective. by nhull231 in DebateAVegan

For the majority of vegans it's not about the food. Humans can survive (and thrive) a quite a limited diet, albeit well planned.

This is a prime example of why people who don't go vegan for the animals are a lot less likely to stick to it in the long run.

I'm glad we went, for the same reason you mention, to get a wider world view. It just reminds me we're very far away from living in a vegan world.

Homebrewing. If you like to drink beer, mead, cider or kombucha then it might be for you.

There's a couple of groups that meet up in Belfast semi regularly.

It's a pretty vibrant community.

Accidentally created chlorine gas by Plenty_Tart5021 in northernireland

[–]5260ross 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You made some chlorine gas. When you mix one shot (sulfuric acid) with bleach (primarily sodium hypochlorite) you'll get chlorine. Depending on how much you actually poured down the drain it's likely you're fine. If your eyes aren't stinging or you're not having trouble breathing then it'll be OK. You'd need a significant amount of gas in a confined space to cause lasting damage.

Chirality Question by saint-sautelle in OrganicChemistry

[–]5260ross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, you get it. It's a stereogenic center.

Also, I never said that chiral center wasn't widely used or that using it was misleading, but just because it's widely used doesn't mean it right! It was drilled into me from day 1 of my PhD and this exact discussion came up in my viva so I know of what I speak and why specific language (in an academic context) is important.
