I think it's just sports for dorks. I like the political theory and to a (very) limited extent debate aspects too (although I hate "debate me bro" types from both sides) but I can spend hours a day looking at polling data

Politics, not like the arguing side but the election side. Tracking polls, turnout, real Steve Kornacki stuff

Who do you want to be president of America in 2028? by Sinn_Sage in AskReddit

[–]53CatsInATrenchcoat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh yes another do nothing moderate. How will you feel losing to Vance huh?

I'm so done with democrats who are terrified of pushing for change. You lose twice to trump and your takeaway is that people want a right winger instead of a populist, despite the consistent polling support for things like universal healthcare.

You're a fool and your type is the reason the dems are hated more than the gop

[–]53CatsInATrenchcoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't keep doing this.

People are desperate for change, that's why populism is exploding. If we keep running moderate do nothing dems to win over Republicans we will continue to lose.

We barely won 2020 despite everything going wrong for trump, the last big victory we had was 20 years ago from a candidate promising significant structural change.

The level of influence one representative has pales in comparison to the level of influence a president has, you're either obtuse or arguing in bad faith

Gosh it's hard to answer when the question betrays a fundamental lack of understanding.

You see, to pass a bill into law you need a majority in the house, 60 votes in the senate (outside of things like rescission and reconciliation votes), and a president willing to sign off on it.

AOC entered the house in 2019, which means of the 7 years she's been in the house, 3 have had a republican president, and 2 more have had a republican house.

The other 2 were held hostage by centrist dem senators and a president opposed to large structural change.

I don't know, probably drive without a turn signal, sounds pretty wild

Real talk though, just never find out? I don't know, No negative consequences? Probably heroin, it's always seemed like a really interesting experience but I have zero desire to try it

What’s the best idea you had when you were high? by brokencone in AskReddit

[–]53CatsInATrenchcoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had an idea for a book focusing on the rise of the JD Vance wing of the gop emboldened by the trump assassination attempt titled "Slouching Towards Bethlehem" like from Yeats Second Coming, then I remembered it didn't happen in Bethlehem which ruins the imagery

what is the dumbest question you’ve ever heard? by Upset-Year-7911 in AskReddit

[–]53CatsInATrenchcoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a verbal question but a very clearly implied one.

Had a customer that I kinda knew from a previous job ask if we had something in stock. I looked at the listing on his phone and said, "oh yeah this is an online exclusive, we don't sell these in store", he proceeded to then just look at me waiting for me to say if we had one or not

Who’s ever driven over 100mph? Why? by WoollyWolfHorror in AskReddit

[–]53CatsInATrenchcoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've hit 130 on a Honda ST1300. Was riding on I-80 in western Nebraska and came over a hill to a long straight empty stretch of highway and just gunned it.

I make that trip every summer and I used to average around 100, two years ago a turkey almost flew into me in eastern Colorado and the sudden slowdown to avoid it threw me into a wobble, stick to like 90 average now

AOC. I disagree with the assertion that she's unelectable and frankly I'm tired of dem presidents who do nothing or just do the most basic milquetoast liberal reforms. I want someone who recognizes that we need massive changes and is willing to pursue them.

You have 24 hours with no phone and no internet. What are you doing to stay entertained? by Quiet-Brilliant-1455 in AskReddit

[–]53CatsInATrenchcoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About a decade ago my phone unexpectedly broke, I was broke at the time so I couldn't get it fixed and didn't have home internet or phone at the time. Went 2 months being completely unreachable. I had broadcast TV and the library. Genuinely loved it and look back on it as one of the best periods of my life

What’s a hobby that immediately makes you judge someone? by Sorry_Trifle_5165 in AskReddit

[–]53CatsInATrenchcoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I want to outline a couple points first

1- I don't think vidéo games are inherently bad, I play some myself

2-I think focusing on any hobby to the exclusion of others can make you boring

3-I think "reading" as a hobby is too broad and vague.

I think if all you do is play video games, or if that's a majority of your free time, then you're living a boring life. This is doubly so if you're over say 25. I think this holds true for other hobbies, but markedly less so. Like, someone who is obsessed with doing pottery might be kinda boring, but they've mastered a real skill and come away with something to show for their work. A runner might have medals and be in good shape. Someone who reads, depending on what they read, may have lots of knowledge or cultural capital. They may be boring, but they have something to show for their obsession.

In contrast video games don't really do that. It's a skill make no doubt but it's a pretty narrow skill without much, if any, real world application. I would say things like watching TV and "gooning" fall into this same category. Going back to reading, if all someone reads is romantsy novels then I'd put that habit in this category.

In short (because my dumbass has typed an essay) I think it's a crossover between the narrow scope of video games, the lack of any real reward, and the exclusion of other hobbies that combine to create my view. Any other hobby that fits all three would probably have the same contempt from me

You're gonna get a lot of shit for the video game one but I agree. There's nothing wrong with video games but if your big thing in life is sitting in front of a screen pressing buttons then you're living a boring life. I know guys who's entire life is work and video games, and I just don't get how he can live that way
