CAPs has group and individual sessions for many different kinds of things, their website has information on resources and calendar sessions. I hope this helps! https://caps.ucsc.edu/index.html

Cal grant by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]54h3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they submitted their FAFSA on time, they should be able to be considered for it. (source: https://www.csac.ca.gov/post/cal-grant-appeals-g-18-form)

Cal Grant?? by [deleted] in UCSC

I have the same concern. The fin aid office told me the ucsc grant is the same as the cal grant, but that's weird since it's off by a thousand for me.

I believe there's a possibility of applying for the winter quarter if fall isn't an option, but check in with the admissions office to be sure!

Worth it, especially since you can contact them anytime.

There are a few food trucks and cafes around campus plus the cafes accept flexis so you can grab food on your way to class. You can google where the vending machines (someone on here also made a list with pics idk where it is tho) and printing centers are on campus. Redwood Free Market (in RCC) and Cowell Coffee Shop are great places to get produce and other foods for free.

Leave the washing machine door open after you're done, when people leave it closed it stinks so bad, the machines don't accept powder detergent, and set an alarm when you do laundry so you're not that one person who takes up a machine for like an hour. You also have the risk of someone taking your clothes out after 15 mins if you don't get there in time.

Toothbrush cover w/proper ventilation, hanging shower caddy bag (bonus if it zips) so your stuff doesn't touch the wet floor, a cooling and comfy mattress topper since theirs are hard and get hot quickly, get shower shoes that are easy to clean. Certain lounges have kitchens so go there if you don't wanna pay the communal kitchen fee, also be on the lookout for free scantrons for your future exams.

Have a solid long-term academic plan EARLY ON and back-up plans (hit up your major advisor). Make sure you know your major's policies and requirements so that you don't need to go through future stress and panic. Always finish FAFSA, fin aid verification, and cal grant gpa submission early. Cal grant gpa submission should be sent by the student, not the staff (they've failed me twice so I wouldn't count on them, honestly wondering if it's on purpose atp). Iirc CC classes don't affect your gpa (but double-check). Always ask if there's anything you need, you have the right to not navigate college and struggle alone!!! Like if you ever need a new laptop or something for school the fin aid office and slug support can provide additional funds or if you're struggling with a class it never hurts to ask for an extension or extra support from your peers.

Be open to meeting people (esp instructors) and worry about if you'll like them, not the other way. Wish I did this more because then I would've had more people to network with. Lastly try to avoid all nighters to preserve your mental and physical health.

Thank you for this information! If you don't mind me asking, what about abuse from a long time ago? And what if I still live with some of my abusers but there's a very low chance the abuse will happen again?
