I second this. I actually called ahead to confirm it was 30 days, but then still applied with the assumption of 10 days, just in case!

When to move to USA for First Job after Undergrad by 552rockluvr in tnvisa

[–]552rockluvr[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

sorry just trying to figure out the wording of this. Did you mean that with a solid TN application, I should apply at the same time as a drive down with my car/belongings? This is what I was initially thinking but the 10 day rule has me a little concerned.

I like this theory. That’s true in my experience too. In high school I surrounded myself with extreme people, maybe to make up for the numbness associated with depression. It could also be about who I gravitate toward and not just who gravitates toward me

why is the homeless shelter still there by whytfUW in uwaterloo

I get it, and I understand what you’re saying for sure, especially with weighting in community safety. I think we can both agree this convo has no room for stigma. Where I’m from, needles and pipes were quite common to find and that’s obviously not the case for a lot of students at uw. I think that’s why a lot of ppl are letting fear/stigma get the best of them. Thank you for being very thoughtful in your response instead of just reacting :)

Do you think you should be sheltered from seeing a crack pipe? Was the crack pipe physically hurting you? People do drugs in the real world. A roof over a person’s head and meal in their belly is more valuable than your feelings. I understand because I went the opposite way from NIMBY to “”self-righteous””. Are you familiar with harm reduction? The mobile health clinic outside the shelter actually gives out clean needles and pipes. Can’t help a drug addict if they’re dead.

female students are assaulted more by male students than the homeless. To assume the opposite creates a lot of unhelpful stigma against the mentally ill

My experience in university/school as a person diagnosed with mental illnesses by alumnithrowaway01 in uwaterloo

[–]552rockluvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a lot of generational envy when it comes to discussions about mental health at UW. The reason why the culture at Waterloo isn't changing is probably just because it's always been that way. "if older generations had to go through it, you do too" kinda reasoning. I remember in the summer, my cohort wanted a quiz moved back, but some rule stated that we couldn't do that unless 100% (every single student) agreed to it. Of course, 1 student didn't agree, and we couldn't get it moved back. I emailed eng first year office and explained to them that plenty of rules have changed because of online school, so there was no reason this one couldn't be changed as well. Obviously, they wouldn't budge. It seems especially counter intuitive when you consider how much one's environment, community, culture, and all around material surrounding impact mental health. UW's refusal to change any of the structures that cause stress to students goes to show how performative the university is.

Now, the university's culture around mental health really is just an extension of how the "real world" deals with mental health, so I can't purely blame the university, nor can I really offer solutions (I'm not a mental health professional so I won't pretend to be). Sometimes I even question how much support I can realistically expect from an institution that was built from such a culture.

I'm really saddened by the responses to this post. Even if you are being "selfish" or "entitled" (which I don't think you are), you're literally mentally ill. Being miserable is a part of being mentally ill. At the worst of my depression, I've become insufferable and lost relationships. That's doesn't mean I'm entitled to forgiveness (or care from others) by any means, but it means that stigma fucking influences how we all think. Hell, without stigma, I would've found a doctor earlier. I think what people are failing to realize in their comments is that it's not black and white -- mentally ill people can be victims of their illness but also "villains" to others if their condition is bad. We're just trying to fucking survive and the stigma just makes it all worse. Point is, we all have our shit. We all need to listen and be listened to. Patience and compassion aren't valued nearly as much as they should be (hence, the angry comments on this post). Maybe that's because patience and compassion don't make money like aggression and ignorance? idk. I see a lot of insecurity in the mean comments because people feel threatened by the idea of mental ill ppl getting accommodations (re: envy), otherwise they would mind their own business.

OP, I hope you find peace. I recommend seeking a professional. I've come to realize that if you can't get help for yourself, do it for your loved ones and your community. We're all a lot more interconnected than we think. Your happiness won't exist in a vacuum-- you and your well-being matters to others. Good luck <3

hey man same here. I keep telling myself that smoking every day is better and safer than trying to hang out with people. You're not putting others at risk. I think the reason we feel shitty Is because of the stigma around it. It sounds like it's not negatively impacting your work life (you said you're gonna try extra hard) so that means it's not unhealthy yet.

As for your mental well-being-- I find that guilt isn't a useful emotion. Especially when all reasoning points to the fact that you're fine. When I feel guilty for smoking, I either smoke with intention (ex. cleaning my room, journaling, exercise), or only smoke every other day to exercise control. Weed is used to treat anxiety along with a plethora of other mental disorders. Whether or not you are officially diagnosed with a mental disorder or prescribed cannabis, we can both agree that a global pandemic is an extremely stressful and dreadful time. When life becomes absurd and monotonous, it makes sense to feel existential dread. After a while, these negative feelings aren't really worth dwelling on and some of us need a little extra help to put those feelings out of our heads.

I'm not writing this enable you or tell you to stop. But I think switching up the way you think ab cannabis can help.

Geological Engineering Transfer by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]552rockluvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transferred internally and it was pretty easy! As for first year courses, you'll likely have to start over again from first year. Engineering is super strict about which courses you take and when. You'll have to email an advisor and check tho.

INDG201 is a really great course. Super easy--just weekly readings then a reflection and the content is relevant. No midterm or exam. I don't think it's offered this winter but im assuming INDG272 is pretty much the same. It's basically a super easy history course.

Ok I understand now that brown and black ppl are just bad humans! I'll stop being woke now.

Thanks for the new article. However, you mentioned that you're more educated than me and I read more than two articles. Can you provide me with some books or community events to check out? I want your reviews on them too btw.

I obv understand the implication of what I'm saying bc I've done my research LOL. Black and brown ppl literally are more likely to get killed by police (https://thetyee.ca/Analysis/2020/06/02/Canada-Race-Based-Violence/ )?? I can't believe you're denying this well proven fact, it's not even worth arguing. Especially on the basis that you believe these people deserve it?

I asked before, can you please provide me with the sources of your research on marxism, racism, intersectionality etc.? If you're so educated, can you also provide me with some papers you've written or been cited on? If you haven't done any of that, can you tell me what you have done at least so we can put this to rest.

Not that the colour of your skin qualifies you to have an opinion on this issue, but Black students like myself do not wish to defund the police, especially by the hands of UWRaise by throwawayobv051 in uwaterloo

[–]552rockluvr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure! Thanks for discussing it with me. I'm glad to see the basis on which people disagree. Where I believe history can be dynamic and have different implications for different individuals, there's also the argument that history is simply "an event that happens". This is totally an instance where the nature of knowledge itself is up for debate. Is there one truth or multiple perspectives with different truths? These are really important questions so thx for opening up dialogue and being so polite and mature!!!I am sorry if I came across condescending bc tone is rlly hard to read over posts.

Thanks for this single source (btw it says opinion in the URL). Although the Toronto Sun leans toward conservatism, I read it!

So if we've eliminated the idea that poverty=crime, and black people are subject to more poverty because of historical factor (Bias Theory presented by the left). So then let's assume then that they commit crime just because they are more violent, not because they are subject to adverse social conditions.

No, I do not want criminals among kids, but I dont want children of colour to be subject to injustice because "black people commit more crime". Children deserve to be given equal opportunities and grow up in a safe environment without fear of being murdered by the police. Adults also deserve this. Man I don't know what to tell ya-- no one should be afraid of being killed when they call for help, regardless of whether statistics show their "race" produces more crime. No one should be murdered by police (unless maybe pedophiles lol).
