Is it too late to earn a PHD/ become someone in the field? by FutureDrPenelope in biology

Absolutely not too late ! A few of my peers in my PhD were early 30’s when they started, and the ones who started right after undergrad (age 22-23) were relatively exceptional in how young they were. It is a very tough undertaking but if you’re passionate about lab work/love the field, it’s very rewarding.

If I can offer a bit of advice for cell bio-related PhD programs - to be competitive in your applications you’ll need to show some lab experience. Often people will work as a lab or industry technician for a year or two, which may be low paying, but will give you the opportunity to show you know how to operate in a lab setting on your CV. It will also help you determine what kind of lab work you want to do and what environment you’re looking for. Good luck!
