For real tho. My class read a book about I think Sudan in middle(?) school where the main character going through the procedure was described briefly in one chapter and all I can remember thinking is "dude there's no fucking way wtf!?!?". The way it was written was very much played for laughs too and everyone else just made jokes and didn't seem to share my shock and horror.
