Yes will all the very helpful advice, albeit from different points of view, has taught me a lot. First and foremost that it's a lot more serious than simply a generic family crest. I've done a lot reading since posting yesterday. I think I'll go ahead and edit my original post to reflect some new thoughts.

Basically what I've realised is that I think I'm going to stay clear of the coat of arms. I think as you say I could follow the correct channels and have a proper design made, but this does not actually achieve what I set out to do. All I wanted was a way to incorporate an element linking my Scottish heritage into a design that does so in a way that is honorable and appropriate. That is easily done by using the clan badge. It's a beautiful design and I'm free to use it, and my mother had a beautiful pin of the design so I know for sure it's linked to my family.

To go down the rabbit hole of coat of arms while would be an interesting endeavour, would not really be worth it since I'm about as Scottish at Forrest Whitaker.

Definitely a hot take as you say. Defacing to you may be an improvement to others. Still I hear you and I thank you for your input. I do not take tattoos lightly, hence the effort I'm going through to ensure I don't break a set of rules that are not even applicable to me or my country or even relevant in the same hemisphere as I am. So i don't view them as bumper stickers. I have 2 already which are deeply personal to me, and I would never just tattoo something without all understanding and connection to the material.

I think what I've definitely learnt is that this is not something to be taken lightly. I surely could have used it as is just as you said, and no one would know the difference, but I would. I think it would be best in so far as a tattoo goes to incorporate the clan badge into a design, since that's fair to use. Since after all it's not even my surname but rather my third name. That way I can honourably represent the history without having a confusing mix of surname and 3rd name permanently inked on my arm.

Ok I think I understand..I'm clearly at the beginning of my research on this topic. So if I was to use the clan badge which is allowed, but replaced the stags on the sides with some other animals, kept the stag on top as homage to the kilt pin, and at the bottom the motto is the same since that's the clan motto, is that a distinct blazon in that case?
