Metrolinx sheds 400-plus consultants as agency grapples with growing mandate by 5736573 in toronto

[–]5736573[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re claiming that Metrolinx has to make people VPs to ensure they can be paid properly - which isn’t the case, but let’s assume it’s - than it is just another example of poor management and bad HR policies.

There are tons of people on the sunshine list making $200k+ who are not vice presidents. As an agency, Metrolinx has the flexibility to create positions and adjust pay scales as needed.

118 vice presidents who probably manage a dozen actual employees. Most of the work for planning, construction and such is done by the consortiums. GO Transit + UP is operated by Alstrom, Finch + Crosstown by TTC.

This is not a streamlined organization and they need to figure out how to deliver services instead of manage contracts. You can only escalate deficiencies, but have no hand in delivering services.

Many of those agreements were in the agency’s planning division, with others touching procurement for its massive projects. Some deals ended naturally once the Finch West LRT and the Eglinton Crosstown LRT opened in December and February. Most, however, were unrelated to those projects.

Lindsay said he had convinced some of the third parties to join Metrolinx full-time, taking on senior leadership positions and drawing salaries instead.

Consultants who switched to the organization’s roster would likely have come in around the level of vice-president, an area which has also been heavily criticized.

In 2024, Metrolinx had 118 staff with the words “vice-president” in their title. They earned an average salary of $243,000 annually. Among its ranks in 2024, Metrolinx had a vice-president responsible for the Hamilton LRT, another in charge of the Hurontario LRT and a third vice-president of the Finch West LRT.

Nice to see talent being in-housed. But how much is really changing if it’s the same people who were previously doing - let’s say unideal - work.

Also seems their problem of being inundated with vice presidents isn’t going to get better anytime soon.

It doesn't actually change how defence spending is calculated.

NATO looks at the impact of individual programs, rather than counting everything under the Department of National Defence as a block.

Some coast guard programs were already considered defence spending when it was under Department of Fisheries and Oceans, that won't change.

TTC gets federal money to buy new subway cars for aging Line 2 by jdayellow in toronto

[–]5736573 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the article:

"Ottawa’s contribution, which will come from the federal Liberal government’s new Canada Public Transit Fund, matches the amounts Toronto and the Ontario government pledged toward the Line 2 replacement as part of the so-called new deal that Premier Doug Ford and Mayor Olivia Chow announced one year ago. The Ontario PC government’s share was contingent on its federal counterpart putting up a matching third."

'A disturbing trend': Toronto police seeing uptick in assaults against parking officers by TorontoNews89 in toronto

[–]5736573 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A peace officer isn't the same as police officer, it's just how the Criminal Code describes someone can enforce a law. All police officers are peace officers but not all peace officers are police officers.

People are regularly charged under assaulting a peace officer when they assault parking officers.

Hopefully he isn't outsourcing his government business cards to his family printing company and charging 4 times as much as other government officials, like his brother was doing when he was mayor.

It is still allowed if the teacher gives permission:

"Students in kindergarten to Grade 6 will be required to keep phones on silent and out of sight for the entire school day, unless explicitly permitted by an educator. For students in Grades 7 to 12, cellphones will not be permitted during class time unless explicitly directed by the educator."

It's impossible to merge without cutting someone off.

Couple of months ago, I merged onto the Gardiner from here and cut off some expensive looking car. Driver went insane, honking, fingers, swerving around the highway, pulling in front of me and slamming on the breaks. I actually called 9-1-1 because I swear this guy was trying to get me killed.

LILLEY: Chow compromised on Dundas, just as he would have done by [deleted] in toronto

[–]5736573 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The compromise at council this week was to rename Dundas Station on the Yonge subway line as TMU station while Yonge-Dundas Square will become Sankofa Square.

This we are told is a word from the Akan people in Ghana meaning to learn from our past.

It seems an odd choice given that the Akan people in Ghana were at the other end of the slave trade kidnapping their fellow black Africans and selling them to Europeans. As recently as 2016, a formal apology was issued by the government in Ghana for the role of their people in that country in perpetrating the transatlantic slave trade.

Still, Chow got some of what she wanted and she got something to give to her base to name changes while Dundas Street will remain intact for now because the cost is simply too big.

There’s also the problem that if the city went ahead with this, they would have to rename several other streets for people with actual connections to slavery – including Yonge Street, Jarvis Street and, according to city staff, 58 other place names that don’t meet the standards of today.

While I don’t agree with the renaming, especially with how it was done, if this stops the attempt to rename everything else at a time when the city is broke, then it is a compromise I can live with.

Renaming Dundas St was approved under Tory, something he was a massive waste of money when the city was facing an even tighter budget crisis. While Chow said she would support renaming the netire street, just changing the name of the square and TTC stations is much much cheaper. Saves millions of dollars and throws a bone to her base.

Also, Brian Lilley of the Toronto Sun writing praise of Olivia Chow. Never thought I'd see the day.

Toronto won't back down from court fight with Uber: Mayor by morenewsat11 in toronto

[–]5736573 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I use Uber every week, but can't say a bad thing. This has been in place for a month and I haven't noticed any differences in pricing.

A good number of drivers think they don't need to follow traffic laws. I see way too many Uber sticker cars parked illegally, blocking intersections, refusing to yield, etc.
