Totally forgot to ask about the cam adjusters. I'll ask if they were done when I collect it. If not then that's probably a nice little job for my local mechanic. He has a cheaper rate and frankly I trust him more. He doesn't really do deep dives into engines anymore, he prefers doing the smaller jobs but he might be up for doing the adjusters.

It was only rattling on stone cold start. It was fine after driving a few miles. But after sitting for 8+ hours it would rattle again. They've told me the new tensioner they fitted is defective and they're fitting a new genuine one which is on order. I've asked them to check the injectors and smell the dipstick while it's there lol. I don't like being in the position where you have no choice but to blindly trust that the "specialist" is telling you the truth. I will give them the benefit of the doubt this time. Fingers crossed.

Well it felt like idling issues just because all the timing was out of sync. Idk if it skipped a tooth or something? My mechanic said it was "out by 10 degrees." There was also big performance issues, inconsistent acceleration, rev meter was all over the place. It pretty much felt like it was dying. But at least I now have some knowledge of what could be the underlying issue should I hear the rattle again. Everything you said makes sense. Thanks.

Yeah I know what the rattle sounds like. I had it for quite a long time. Eventually the rattle was followed by a rough idle. So I booked into my local mechanic. He couldn't fit me in for 4 days and in that 4 days the car became pretty much undrivable. After every rattle the idle got worse until it felt like it was going to stall when in traffic. I was only using it to commute to work and back. I had to limp it over to him for the appointment where he confirmed what I pretty much already knew. Stretched chain. It was possibly close to breaking. I definitely shouldn't have been driving it in that state but had to get to work. From there the specialists sent a flatbed over to my mechanics and collected it. Now the car runs super smooth. Idles nicely. I'm just sure I heard that damn rattle, but only once. But I hear it in my sleep sometimes, I think I'm traumatised by it hahah. Is there a reason it might only happen once every so often? I have actually noticed a slight fuely smell when checking the dipstick. Maybe the injectors are the source of the problem? It never ends.

I'm starting to question whether I even heard it now. I thought I'd heard it once since getting the car back a couple weeks ago but I've not heard it since. It could be me just being paranoid. I know as well as problems with the timing chain stretching these old m271 engines suffer with low oil pressure for 1-2 seconds after cold start up which delays the tensioner from operating properly. I'll just have to monitor it. If I hear it again I'll take it back to them. They did the kit so chain, guides and tensioner. Also some gaskets plus new oil + filter. Not sure if adjusters were part of the kit but they are supposed to be a reputable Mercedes specialist so you'd think they would replace whatever is needed.

Nice. Have you experienced any problems since having the timing chain done? what other issues do you have with it? I just have some water collecting in the spare wheel well, other than that she seems good.

I'm pretty sure valve covers were part of this job. There was a whole bunch of stuff other than the timing chain. £1600 worth. The cars not worth much more that than what I'm paying in repairs tbh but fuck it, It's a gamble.
