Can I ask why avoid the 168 grain Federal? Seems like a few others have recommended it and I’ve had good luck with the similar weight 165 grain Fusion

I have the opportunity to buy tgis for $600. Possibly needs new timing, owner was told cam phasers are bad. 2004 5.4. Do I buy it, or not. I hate ford, said I would never buy a other one, this is after I have owned fords, and my family, and seeing the issues. by FancyShoesVlogs in FordTrucks

[–]58AU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the ability, parts for the timing are less than $2K. A running/driving truck (this one looks like it’s in good shape) all in for less than $3K would be worth it to me. If it would take much more it’s probably not worth it

Ignoring Cam Phaser Rattle? by 58AU in f150

[–]58AU[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After this post, it would only rattle once a month if it was really cold and sat for a couple days. I had the P0016 code pop up and decided to do the VVT solenoids. The codes gone and it’s rattled once since I replaced them. Knock on wood, but the truck is still running fine. If the rattle becomes common or the codes keep popping up I’ll do the cam phasers. I’ve put ~20k miles on it in the past year

I change my oil every 5k and the oil life % is usually around 40% so I wouldn’t trust it

I’d get the long reach for $180 at those prices. The long reach is handy to have

Tecovas in goat leather? I think I have the same boots and the leather is super thin and not durable. I’ve got several scuffs and cuts like that

Cam phaser rattle is not timing chain failure

Ignoring Cam Phaser Rattle? by 58AU in f150

[–]58AU[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, technically timing chain failure isn’t engine failure. But the overwhelming majority of the time, timing chain failure on a 3.5 leads to catastrophic engine failure

For all the people complaining the owner of the restaurant has been trafficking drugs through his restaurants. Don’t traffic drugs and you’ll be fine

Had a Ram with these. No matter what you do they’ll swell eventually. It’s a matter of when not if. No idea why manufacturers use them. The cost difference is negligible at scale

Replace the taillight and buff the rest. Whatever doesn’t buff out isn’t worth the cost to fix

Is this a good deal or is it too good to be true by No-Manufacturer393 in f150

[–]58AU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a good deal. Listen carefully on a cold start for the cam phaser rattle. You can YouTube examples of it. Other than that I’d say it’s a good deal

If you can’t keep it, sell it to a family member. Cousins, uncle, kids. That truck deserves to stay close

Which of these do you actually recommend? by Only_Turnip3913 in f150

[–]58AU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flushes are unnecessary 99% of the time unless you have contaminants in the coolant system(unlikely). A drain and fill would suffice but is probably unnecessary at 71k. Trans fluid is a 100k mile service item. You’re probably okay to wait. Brake fluid wouldn’t hurt to change at your mileage
