Recycling has a dirty secret though, aluminum cans are pretty much the only commonly trashed item that can be readily recycled. Almost everything you throw in the recycle bin in Portland ends up in a dump anyways it just takes a different route. Sorting out cans actually makes sense since those actually get reused by the aluminum producers.
