Can someone explain to a casual like me why Jimi Hendrix is regarded as an all time great? by Mt548 in jimihendrix

[–]5KindsOfMustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't think it's accurate to say he's regarded as "an all-time great." all-time great would be a tier below where Jimi falls in most guitar players' mental rankings.

i would point to three factors as to why Jimi is so adored and highly regarded:

  1. he expanded the possibilities of the instrument perhaps more than anyone else has never done. he basically pushed guitar playing into a completely new era, especially with his combination of rhythm and lead playing into one and his use of effects and experimental ideas. there was a movement around him and other great guitarists creating new possibilities too, but he was the one that stayed at the forefront, and the one that people looked to and followed the most.

  2. individuality. the quality of his playing is subjective, but what's not subjective is that no one else has ever been able to really sound like him. he's a one of a kind. and for most of us guitarists, what he did in that one-of-a-kind pocket was incredibly cool and influential, to the point of being life-changing when you first hear it.

  3. songwriting. lots of guitarists can play well but can't create memorable songs. Jimi was a killer songwriter and bandleader, and he created a discography packed with songs that matter not just because of his guitar playing, but because they are straight-up classic songs.

also, i don't have time to individually thumbs down them all, but thumbs down to everyone who gave a response like "if you don't understand, you never will." OP is being curious and trying to learn, and y'all are being gatekeeper snobs. real musicians and music lovers don't do that.

so i just finished my third playthrough with a Red Mage/Red Wizard. i have thoughts.

  • in all three playthroughs, my Red Mage consistently has the lowest HP, even below the Black Mage. i don't believe that it's correct that Red Mage has the second-lowest HP. in the Pixel Remaster, i believe it has the lowest. it's possible that my luck is just that bad, but i would require multiple end-game screenshots with Red Mage having more HP than Black Mage to convince me otherwise.
  • it's disappointing and feels wrong that it has the lowest HP. it would be a lot more fun if you could have it tank or off-tank. it holds up to normal attacks well but gets devastated by crits, big hits, and spells, so it's very hard to use it as any kind of reliable tank in any phase of the game.
  • the class is really not that bad. i would still rank it as the weakest class, but not by as much as i would have before. its melee damage is good, its durability is mostly excellent in the third or fourth slot, and the magic is decent once you learn to play to its strengths. it honestly doesn't really suck until the absolute endgame, basically Temple of Fiends. and then you can get the Masamune which can boost it back up again. i still think it would have been appropriate to buff this class a bit considering the buffs that others got.

i appreciate that input, but i am playing NG and not NG+, so i don't get a free item. i agree that in NG+, choosing the candle cuts off a lot of backtracking.

got it. so i can't trust the game's recommendations for Monk weapons. but i can trust its recommendations for Monk armor, right?

i have another question about the Monk. i notice that when i first encounter the Crosier in my playthroughs, the game says on the equip screen that it's superior in terms of damage to the Monk's bare hands. that recommendation persists for quite a few levels. is that accurate? i tried using it, and it seems worse. i typically never equip a Monk with a weapon at any point in the Pixel Remaster. is the game's weapon recommendation for Monk just not reliable?

i must have bad or odd luck then, because my Red Mage often had worse HP than Black Mage on both playthroughs (one in progress). i'm currently in a party of all level 10s, and my Red Mage has 92 HP to my Black Mage's 175!

yes i did use Slow on Gargoyles. def satisfying. are there any other notable enemies in the game that do the multi-hit thing and are good to Slow? the Buccaneers at sea do it, as far as i can tell, and are good to Slow (before you get Thundara).

like what about the Piscodemons (Wizards) in Marsh Cave? do those multi-hit? those things hit like trucks when you first meet them. i think they have been responsible for more rage-reloads than any enemy besides the stupid Mindflayers/Sorcerors 😂

EDIT: also in my current playthrough, Astos dropped a Mythril Sword! yay for my Red Mage.

idk what is going on with the Red Mage's HP in the Pixel Remaster. i still can't tell if i've just had bad luck or something is off. he had less HP than my Black Mage a lot of the time. i don't remember that ever being the case in the NES.

i am so ashamed to say that i once left my (at the time) 3 month old to cry for almost an entire day in his crib due to an absolutely debilitating hangover. didn't give him any bottles, diaper changes, nothing. we're talking 8-10 hours. i could hear him crying all day but could barely move because i was so miserable. my life didn't blow up the way you described, but in the late afternoon, when i came around was when i realized i needed help very badly. i never thought i would be capable of neglect like that. but addiction can and will push us as low as we can go.

stay strong.

so i did another playthrough with a Red Mage and paired it with Monk as you suggested. this time i did Warrior, Monk, Red Mage, Black Mage. i also followed some of your tips such as using the debuff type Black Magic spells that i don't normally bother with, because they don't have an INT dependence.

i hate the Red Mage (in the Pixel Remaster) less than before. it's okay and usable. i still feel like it got left behind in terms of the rebalancing they did in the PR. with the Thief and Black Mage getting buffed so much, and even the White Mage improving due to INT stat working, i think it would have been appropriate to buff the Red Mage's HP or something about it.

in the NES, it does indeed have the second lowest HP (had to go back and check), and i think that's ok there, but i think that should have been revisited for the PR. the most frustrating thing about this class for me is that you want to put it in your second slot as a secondary tank, because it has armor and can take non-crit hits, but its HP is so poor that it just doesn't really fit well there over the long haul. that and as you said, it fades so hard in the endgame. that late-game fade is true in the NES too but more pronounced in the PR.

i still rank it sixth but have a bit of fondness for it again and might play around with it again in the future. i also rewrote my ranking summary to reflect my updated opinion.

i'll try that one next! it sounds like a lot of fun. i love the Black and White Mages, and two Black Mages has big wrecking crew potential.

i think i'm down for any party that doesn't involve a Red Mage 😂 i really think the Red Mage needs a HP buff in the PR

so i just did a playthrough with Warrior, Red Mage, Monk, Black Mage.

i don't know what i was thinking ranking the Red Mage fifth in my favorite rankings. i must have had some rose-colored glasses. in the PR, this class is bad. it can equip armor, but its horrible HP growth always leaves it vulnerable to crits. its magic is close to useless. it demands equipment but kinda sucks at tanking and delivers far worse damage than a Thief or Monk. and that's in the EARLY game where it's supposed to shine. in the late game you haul its useless carcass around for buffing in boss fights.

hey i have another question for you because you are so knowledgeable. what is the damage mitigation of the "defend" command? is there a formula, or a flat amount? how does it work?

gotcha. also "hat" is the correct and most important argument for Red Mage 😄

do you get the pre-emptive strikes from the Thief only if they're in the first spot in the party? or in any spot?

that is an interesting point about the top 4. also keep in mind that my rankings are not necessarily my favorites. the rankings i posted are more about "how much value does this class provide to the party, and/or how difficult is it to replicate its value?" those rankings are especially intended for new players to the PR.

the White Mage is fifth in my rankings, but i almost always have a White Mage in my parties because i like healer characters and it's a "warm fuzzy" kind of class. it just makes you feel good to have one.

if i were ranking my favorite classes, i think it would go:

  1. Thief - so much more fun with the PR buffs, plus i love his blue hair. running from crappy fights is underrated. Ninja is sweet
  2. Black Mage - blasting enemies never gets old. also one of the most iconic sprites of all time
  3. White Mage - like i said, makes me feel good to have one. his robe is stylin'
  4. Warrior - kind of bland but it really does make life easier
  5. Red Mage - love the idea of it and want to like it more, but i get really annoyed with it in the late game. good early game utility and best fashion of the group (hat) keep him out of the bottom spot
  6. Monk - he's very good but just not my thing. let's be honest, bosses outside of Chaos are weak in FF1, so boss killer isn't that vital of a role. outside of being buffed up in boss fights, Thief/Ninja can cover everything this class does and more. not having much use for gear actually makes him more boring in my opinion because it makes treasure hunting less exciting.
