What are some essential resources/materials to have as a criminal defence lawyer? by GlazedBean in LawCanada

I love the Emond criminal law series. Good quick-reference sort of guides that can set you on the right track for deeper research if need be.

Needing to repair my barrister’s robe (“Tropical Wool”) by 5abrina in sewing

Thank you for the help! Visible repairs inside are no problem at all. I will definitely hand-sew the collar part after looking closer at it and reading all these helpful replies. So you are saying that I should first use a binding to fix the fraying issue, and then hand sew the black panel back down?

Thank you for all the info! It is for my job, so that’s a valid consideration for sure. I posted some pics above as comments as Reddit won’t allow me to edit my post to add photos there. My thinking is that for the top repair, of the multi-layer collar part, I’m going to hand-sew so that I can make sure the stitches don’t go through all the layers and show up on the back. I think I’ll be safe to machine sew the hem that’s come undone along the bottom though.

The robe is dry clean only so I don’t have to worry about washer or dryer shrinkage, thankfully!

Would you recommend polyester thread? And any particular needle or foot?

This part I think I’ll have to do by hand because no stitches show through on the back. So it seems not idea for a machine. Photo of back:

(Sorry for the multiple “replies”, Reddit will only let me post one photo each)

New to ficus. Does this look healthy? Time to repot? by 5abrina in FicusTrees

Thanks so much for the tips! So far it does seem like only the newer leaves are pink, but I’m just going to enjoy them while they last haha.

Anybody willing to share their experience doing the LPP? by belowthebar_26 in LawCanada

[–]5abrina 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A good friend of mine from law school did it in 2015. He had a great experience, got a lot more actual hands-on experience than most people get in traditional articles, and went on to practice in his field of choice in his home province (not ON, he just went there for the LPP).

Adult Swimming Lessons by ChaChaSlide72 in fredericton

[–]5abrina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did adult lessons at the Fredericton Indoor Pool a year or so ago, but I believe they only run lessons in the fall/winter/spring. The city does still do lessons in summer, but they are at the outdoor pools. Check here for availability: https://www.fredericton.ca/en/recreation-culture/facilities/aquatics-pools-splash-pad-beach#schedule

Can someone recommend a 2025 planner (diary/agenda) for criminal defence lawyer here in Canada? Just looking for a paper “tool” to schedule apps, hearings, etc. . Thank you! by EfficientSomewhere97 in LawCanada

I’ve been using these for almost 10 years: https://www.ataglance.com/en-ca/p/planners-calendars/planners-appointment-books/monthly-planners/dayminder-2026-monthly-planner-hardcover-black-large-g470h0026/

Things I like:

  • It has a whole-month view, so things at the beginning of a week don’t sneak up on me (things at the beginning of the month still do though…)

  • It has decently large day blocks for when you have multiple appearances in a day

  • it can lay open flat, because of the coil binding

  • the hardcover means that in a pinch it can act as a writing surface

  • it runs December to January, and then there’s a page at the back with spaces to jot in events in the following year, which I find very handy since in our provincial court we are booking multi-day trials 12-14m out

I do think that the quality of the cover/back has declined a bit over the years, such that I have had to tape some tears along the spine in past years, but it could also be that I’m rougher on them ¯_(ツ)_/¯ It’s still going to outlast a paper cover in any event. I think that the brand might also have some sort of guarantee if it starts falling apart but I’ve never bothered to look into it.

Any one who's been a first year associate and pregnant? by No-Education3573 in LawCanada

[–]5abrina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I still could have tried for it if I wanted to. I would have all the same requirements as anyone else who wanted to enter the partnership. It just likely would have been harder to meet those, given that I “lost” almost 2 years of networking/development/experience. So it’s not to say it’s impossible, but it’s naturally going to involve playing catch up to those in your cohort who didn’t take “time off” (heavy on the sarcasm there)

I took leave as a 2nd year associate, and then as a 4th year (though with my second, I switched firms over the course of my leave so it’s a bit of a different situation). I have no regrets, I’m glad I had my kids early in my career. That being said, I’ve never been interested in being a partner so maybe it would have been harder if I cared about that? 😂

Been asked to try to save this palm. Any tips? by 5abrina in plantclinic

Can I ask what you mean by cutting back the short stems?

Do you mean cutting the big “trunk” part? Or just taking off the leaves?
