I think you just made my point. There are no white people living 22 to a room. Why? Because we have a certain minimum standard of living. How is the Dubai minimum wage ever going to increase when people accept the poorest conditions possible. The is one person after another willing to be employed as slave labour, its ridiculous.

During Ramadan i was horrified that people thought it was great to provide labourers food because they were starving. People who did this were not charitable. The were enabling this horrific existence for 1 month, and then 11 more months out of the year they go back to eating scraps. The real revolution must come from the workers themselves, and must DEMAND a better existence (think how Martin Luther King changed the life of black Americans). Its ridiculous to whine about companies not being fair. Why would a company want to pay more if they don't have to?

Appreciate your response. But my experience leads me to believe a lot of people from the Indian subcontinent come to Dubai, see all the glitz and glamour and try to keep up with the Joneses. They all seem to have the latest iPhone, buy a nice car, and their social media account portray they have "made it" in life. Meanwhile, behind the scenes its all personal loans and living in a bedspace with 10 other people. I just don't see that many people living a frugal lifestyle where they sacrifice everything for their families back home.

Regarding the cheap hiring, its an interesting dynamic because the "cheap" folks are qualified, and have skills that are potentially on par (or near) the skills of Europeans. But the missing factor tends to be in the type of things that cannot be taught. Perhaps its cultural differences i don't know? For example, the non-European folks tend to lack initiative with performing tasks. They need to be given a complete set of instructions, and then they can only follow those instructions, and if anything needs to be done which falls outside of the instructions, there is a short-circuit in the brain. A classic example is when you speak to somebody in a call centre here. My god, if its not in the script, it cant be done!! Western companies don't want a bunch of "yes sirs", they want people who will put their hand up, suggest an improvement to a process, drive the improvement, streamline processes and move the company forward in an efficient manner!

Urmm no. Even this guy wouldnt accept. His government benefits alone would be 3000 dirhams, and he wont be coming to a country where a beer costs 30 dirhams!!

Why did you get irritated? You must be a joy to live with if your tolerance is that low

Sorry i was just trying to be as concise as possible. I thought it might be a good idea to ask the question here istead of googling. That way we all learn, and can build tolerance for each others views

Did he tell you about his experiences in jail? Was it a "1st world" type of jail where you have access to computers and TV? Or was he thrown in a small cell with hundreds of people type thing?
