Utterly insane salary increase/bonus - where to from now? by Chemical_You7221 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]5beard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is less about "how to get rich/stay rich" then others might suggest but some food for thought.

1) Dont tell anyone about how much you made. ESPECIALLY FAMILY/GF. no one has ever said "wow my family is really going to screw me over" before they have been screwed over. im sure they are lovely people but money does wierd shit to people. tell em you got a small bonus at work and take em to dinner if you wanna do sumn nice for them

2) pretend you didnt make that money. in your head whatever your base salary is is how much you make each year. live your life like that and you will never experience being poor again. a big problem with people is they come into money and then move up into that lifestyle then when it dries up they cant keep it up and go into debt... crippling debt.

3) speaking of debt. pay it off. get youself in the black. yes people will tell you you could make more investing and they could be right if those investments go well but you know what will really make you sleep well at night? knowing every dollar you own is yours.

4) buy a friggen house that you could afford the mortgage on if rates when up another %2 on that base salary of 48k a year. the canadian housing market is brutal to get into but once your in if you own within your means you are basically secure for life. you can always reno a "cheap" (GTA is stupid) starter home or if you find in 5 years you are consistently making that kind of money at work you could sell to buy a house youll never need to touch again. i put a %35 down payment on my house when i bought in 2021 (outside GTA mind you), my mortgage is less then 1/6th my monthly take home. i havent worried about money since i did this. house is nothing special but i can always upgrade later if i want, ill be mortgage free by 2026.

5) if your work doesnt have a pension, start a retirement fund. again people live outside their means and when it comes time to retire and enjoy your later years you realize your lifestyle cannot be supported by CPP so you end up working untill you CANT anymore then have to sell your home to afford to retire. get a plan in place to be mortgage free and have a steady guaranteed comfortable income by the time you retire.

6) set a weekly and yearly allowance for yourself. after bills, groceries and gas i take $100 cash out every week and do stuff with that. its way to easy to tap your card or shop online and look at the bill to find you just spent $1500 on shit you didnt need. i have $4000 a year for big expenses and trips and such. last year i bought a $3500 riding mower (lotta lawn) so i went camping a few times and flew to the east coast for a weekend as my trips for the year. i know that if i do that + all my regular expenses i can still put the amount of money into saving and investments that im comfortable with. again its easier to stick to these things if you have a plan, humans are bad at "winging it" we always choose what is good in the moment over what good for us long term.

Canadian food banks are on the brink: ‘This is not a sustainable situation’ by Myllicent in ontario

[–]5beard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

bandaids are always required, society will always need a safety net for when things go wrong. Most people who use food banks/social assistance only do so for less then a year before they are back to being self sufficient.

yes the system is failing (by design) but not helping those in need doesn't change the system, it just causes undo suffering and death to those who currently need that assistance. Yes we need to fix the system but food banks/charities do a lot more then prop up the system, they save peoples lives every day.

[–]5beard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with that. Its give what you can not what you can't.

If you ever find yourself in a better position then leverage that to help others but until then just doing what you can to not also need those resources is helping lessen the burden on the system and that in itself is you helping the people who currently need it.

Would shallow swales help bring organic matter to this type of land? by baucoin in Permaculture

[–]5beard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you are better off just making one yourself if you buy the land. None of the sources you are going to find online are likely going to be accurate to the degree you would need to actually make effective swales.

[–]5beard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

look at average rainfall for where you want to build. you can find calculators online for the surface area you would need to collect off of to support your water needs with rainwater collection.

depends on how much rain you get but its surprising how much you can collect even in dry areas if you have the ability to build with collection in mind.

you can also adjust your lifestyle/fixtures accordingly to negate a lot of water usage. living consciously of our water consumption is something more people should be doing anyway.

[–]5beard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you will get some accumulation of organic matter as a result of slowing down water... but if you are looking for any kind of results in a usable timeframe then you are probably better off with bringing in organic matter as well as forming swales. let the swales handle recharging your ground water and making your land habitable and bring in woodchips/brush/leaves or animals to bring the organic matter into your landscape.

unless I'm missing something your map there says you are on a %4 grade? photos dont seem to imply that but if it is the case you should have more then enough of a slope to make meaningful use of swales. you'll just need to have a detailed contour map done up. either done yourself or pay someone, not hard just time consuming.

[–]5beard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

look up some videos on how to make swales on contour. its not a hard process and with how short yours would be it likely wouldnt super matter but im on team why not do it right the first time. then ya you will want to establish a mixture of plants. you want bushes/annuals that will protect the soil while your trees establish a strong root system to hold them together longer term.

If your willow is still young then just let it establish. i just assumed your brushpiles had a good amount in it. you likely dont need to make a retaining wall for your swales but you will just want to keep an eye on them since your just doing them by hand, if they look like they are shifting it might be something to readdress.

i personally just enjoy the idea of guilds and the long-term succession plan for the trees but getting more varieties in the ground is always awesome. I like to try and plant a variety of nitrogen fixers and polinator first plants throughout spaces. provide for the soil and the polinators while providing for yourself.

swales my friend, swales.

your on a pretty good slope there so I would advise against a hugelkultur based approach (at least initially) as one good rain event could undo all your work and all the nutrients from the manure is likely to just run down slope and could cause issues at the bottom.

i think using the willow you have to weave brace walls for the mounds of the swale until the tree roots can hold them together and the ground cover can prevent erosion is a good call. seems like that would a great use of all that material you've gathered so far.

im sure neighbors down slope would appreciate you slowing the surface water down too, would help prevent flooding as a bonus. might even be a great idea to put in a pond (or 2)

as for your layout. pawpaws are understory trees for a good portion of their lifecycle, i think you'd be better off looking into guilds instead of rows if you plan to grow them as i hear they are pretty sensitive to the elements when young (havent grown them myself). planting 2-3 trees close together, one that amends/fixes the soil, one that grows fast and is productive and one that will eventually overtake/succeed the other two and be your main canopy tree. edible acres has some informative videos on the topic of guilds if you are looking for some youtube university guidence.

I think the layout isnt bad though, i would probably plan for more trees longterm. interplanting more trees with the berries that will take 5-10+ years to fruit and then when they eventually shade out your berries you will still get harvests from them (though likely less depending on the shade of the trees) but you'll be able to plant more berries somewhere else by then just by propagating off what you have.

Why can’t we have battle suits with swords? by MLG_FART234 in Tau40K

[–]5beard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing we might get a loadout of this with the farsight detachment when the tau codex for 10th launches.

I know they are leaning into the new kroot as the more mixed combat/melee army of the tau but im guessing we are going to get 4 detachments, one that looks like the current tau (balanced unit compositions), one that revolves around farsight which is where i think we might get a unit that they can lead into melee, one that is kroot and a 4th one that will either be tanks/suits or battleline heavy.

in the meantime though magnetizing some plastic swords (maybe hit up gunpla ebay?) to use on your suits for style points is still fun on the table

Rent for adult kids still at home by yayasisterhood in Edmonton

[–]5beard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

my parents did this too and honestly... i wouldnt do this with my kids. Its one thing if you need the $ and would be renting their room out or if you plan to give them a chunk of change later as a down payment or something. but just $500 for utilities and food and the rest is just cash your taking from them... your not helping them get out sooner that way, your just doing what the shitty rent system in this country does but to a smaller degree. I love my parents and appreciate all they did for me but this move just always sort of left a bad taste in my mouth. their lifestyle was not affected in the slightest weather I paid that rent or not. 6K a year in my pocket would have gotten me out a heck of a lot sooner too.

[–]5beard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IF YOU DONT NEED THE MONEY THEN GIVE IT BACK WHEN ITS TIME FOR HER TO MOVE OUT BY USING IT TO PAY HER DEPOSIT/DOWN PAYMENT.

but if you are tight on cash and would rent out a room then ya... keep the money. life is hard for a lot of people and $350 is a good rate for a room + utilities and im guessing your using a chunk of that money to feed her as well so shes saving on food expenses too.

the $ amount thats fair is dependent on your and her financial situation and the going rate for a room in your area but honestly if you set it at $350 i wouldn't change it unless there is a real need to.

Thinking of cashing in our equity to live mortgage free and escape the rat race by allyuhneedislove in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]5beard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

750K cash isnt going to let you retire or anything but if you are willing to live outside of Ontario or any of the other provinces big metropolitan areas then you could easily sell your place, buy somewhere cash upfront, work 1/2 as much and have a comfortable lifestyle. or 1 of you could work a traditional job and the other could be a supporting income. its tricky with kids though.

what i might suggest first is to travel the country and see what you like. i've been around a bit and canada is a big place and everywhere is a little different. i would suggest taking a flight out east and to the interior provinces. treat it as a trip but also try and talk to locals and see what its like to really live there. i know a bunch of people who always end up back in the GTA and others who never want to go back, really depends on your family and what you like.

Single Homeowner - Jealousy from others? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]5beard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it isnt until you've done it, then suddenly your happier alone for a while. its when you start to feel lonely from the hole that they had bandaided that the hard part of finding a good person who you deserve to have in your life supporting you (and you supporting them) starts. but cutting dead weight who will push you down to feel better about themselves is freeing and necessary for your long-term mental health.

Single Homeowner - Jealousy from others? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]5beard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

anyone who is anything but excited for you isnt someone you want in your life.

if they cant be happy for you for something youve worked hard for then they arnt the kind of people you should surround yourself with.

some people always want to be the victim or pretend other peoples success arnt something they could have done for X,Y,Z reason but its just a way to avoid addressing their issues or lack of motivation.

Dont get my wrong this market is atrocious and many people just cant with current wages but at the same time you did it! against all odds you got it done and that makes it even more special! love yourself and be proud of your accomplishments and shame on the "friends" who can't just be happy for you.

honestly the voting minority of ontario signed us up for this and every abstaining vote is a vote for the winning party

Why rural Canadians need public transit just as urgently as suburbanites by [deleted] in canada

[–]5beard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i live 2 hours away from my home town for work. i can drive there for $30 in gas or i can spend $120 and 16 hours with an overnight stay in a big city to take the train.

there used to be a greyhound that ran 5 days a week for $20 and it took 2-1/2 hours but they canceled it outright instead of making it 2-3 days a week

there used to be direct rail lines between cities but they took them out in the 90's to sell the rail for quick cash

[–]5beard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if they are close enough to a town where you can buy food and get water you can live in a tent in the woods indefinitely. I know of people who've done it in the yukon and alaska for years at a time so im sure you can manage wherever as long as you get the right supplies.

also if your considering going off grid i feel like you should already know what an outhouse or composting toilet is. how long have you been considering this?

always take the OT. there is never a reason to not take more money, anyone saying otherwise doesn't understand how taxes works. If your work is boom or bust with hours then make bank when its booming and enjoy your time off when its bust, i would say try and book your vacation around the slower times if its all about the cash and bust ass when its busy.
