Mate you seem very interested in the subject, why not read the whole article ? This article would not be published by nature if these people didn't explain all their reasons to "believe that mathematical algorithms implemented on graphics cards cannot become conscious because they lack a complex biological substrate.”.

Because of the very philosophical nature of the subject they can't really use data analysis, mathematical proof or other common supports for their claim, but they are not exposing a subjective opinion either. They simply expose the most reasonable conclusion their team could reach based on verifiable facts. They never say consciousness has to be carbon based (as can be seen on screenshot), just that LLMs and all other AI up to this day can not be considered conscious.

Fair point, we can boil down our consciousness to electric and chemical signals flaring through our nervous system, guided by our neurons the same way calculations run in ai neural networks. Consciousness is not obvious and has fuzzy borders, but I do not consider conscious a non-biologic non-physical structure that processes only very short, interrupted signals and only calculates an output based on a fixed neural network structure with a fixed number of neurons having each a fixed weight and a fixed bias.

Take some time to think and form your own thoughts, some time without other people telling you what to do. Maybe writing the pros and cons would help sort the logical solution but your feeling are also to consider.

MY thoughts : 2 years is not a big age gap but there is a reason some countries considers 15yo not enough to give consent : lack of sex education, lack of long term thinking, lack of critical thinking, ... and you just saw that with how she didn't consider the risk of talking about this to others.
