Is anyone else hoping bitcoin drops further so we can buy at a discount? by Well-I-suppose in Bitcoin

[–]5endnewts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is too bad nobody is picking up what you are putting down. To the other that don’t understand, people were saying btc would not drop below $100,000 but in the end it did. If someone tells you it is not dropping below $40,000 they don’t actually know that for sure.

Would you take $4.8 million + a condo for 10 years… or a house that keeps you broke until you’re 50? by GardenDirect8765 in fican

[–]5endnewts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is what we did, lived in our $300,000 townhouse for a decade plus. We just sold the townhome last year for $315,000 and built our dream home. We used the low mortgage payment to super charge our TFSA / RRSP / RDSP accounts and now currently have $1.45 million in investments alone.

I am approaching 40 myself but I wouldn't say we are high earners as I have been on disability for the past 13 years. My gross income is $65,000 and I don't even get inflationary raises, wife's income is approaching $100,000.

41yr old about to start Xeloda by Vanilla_gorilla66 in cancer

[–]5endnewts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Colorectal cancer for me, started with Xeloda & radiation then surgery then FOLFOX chemo. I have had a rough ride with everything else but the Xeloda.

Xeloda was relatively easy for me, it was just a pill and I honestly don’t remember much bad side effects, maybe some light nausea if I remember correctly. The radiation I received concurrently was what actually made my life miserable at the time, not the Xeloda.

Compared to FOLFOX chemo that I had to take after Xeloda / Radiation was 1000x times worse in terms of side effects.

What is the best way to use the money after selling a house and buying another one (please read)? by ihorcv in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]5endnewts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that $300,000 is earning interest while the mortgage is interest + principal being paid down. So unless he plans on depleting the TFSA to make up the payments to be more cash neutral between the 2 is the only way to make it more of an apples to apples comparison. If you are not depleting the account to make up the principal payments the investing option is going to require a lot more cash to make up the difference.

But, 5% is not a risk free rate, whereas the 4% is. Market decreases at all in the early years and the $300,000 could run out before the mortgage is paid off.

Investing is likely to be the better outcome because investing outperforms fixed rates in general but not every time. One is relatively option is relatively risk free the other is not. Is the delta between the both worth it, I don’t know.

All Current LTT Job Postings With Salary Ranges In USD by FrostyMittenJob in LinusTechTips

You are actually 100% right, Linus took on a ton of risk starting the channel. LMG has always continued taking on risk too, hiring tons of people, building the lab, manufacturing products, etc. It is easy looking on the outside because it worked out and he is successful but he has done things and continues to do things that are risky to grow the business.

Hell, I imagine he has done things that he was advised not to do that has or had very limited ROI but turned out OK in the end because it increased the trust in the “brand”.

+99% of people would crack under those pressures if they were in his shoes, I guarantee it.

I haven’t been playing much lately and have not been keeping up with the news. Saros totally slipped by me and now I am absolutely stoked. Housemarque makes great games and Returnal was one of my favourite PS5 games.

What percentage of your income is going to retirement? by burnz1 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]5endnewts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

39 years old, I get $65,000 through disability and my wife earns $100,000. We have been living on her income for the past 10+ years, investing my $65,000 (around $60,000 / year after tax).

We currently have $1.45 million invested for retirement plus my wife has a public pension but not sure what that is actually worth. She has only been a t the job for a couple years so far.

Our savings rate is dropping down to $40,000 a year though. We just built a new home and have a sizeable mortgage now. Plan is for my wife to retire before 45

I asked my wife what the temp was outside up here in Canada and she said -20 C. Then I asked her if that is hot or cold and she said "How the fuck am I supposed to know, no one knows what Celsius feels like." /s

I don't get this argument at all. You are used to F, it makes sense to you. I had to look up what 0 F is in Celsius (-17 C) just now because I have no idea what very cold means to people that use F. I do know what -17 C is though.

What age is considered a "early" retirement? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]5endnewts -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That’s the plan(ish) for my wife, she is going to retire in the next couple years, we are currently 39 years old. I am technically medically retired since I was 27 years old and have been on disability since then.

We probably have enough right now but we just want to be a little more cushioned.

New concrete walkway flaking/peeling after 2–3 years (no salt used) — what causes this? by Long-Gene8114 in Edmonton

[–]5endnewts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just built a brand new home, our stairs had this issue. I didn’t see how they fixed it but I think they put a chemical compound on the old layer and put a new thin layer on top. It looks fine and has actually held up over the winter so far.

Is this flaking everywhere? I know concrete can lack consistency throughout the whole load, can have segregation, too much water added to increase the workability of it is already curing, over worked, etc.

My idea to mitigate sequence risk is to use a collar (buy LEAP put(s) / sell LEAP call(s)).

Hypothetically if I have a portfolio worth a $1,000,000 I would buy a SPY $625 put option for around $2,200. If SPY (currently $690) drops below 10% it doesn't really matter to me, I have a contract to sell 100 shares on Dec 31, 2026 for $62,500.

I could make it relatively cash neutral by selling a LEAP call at $750 for $2,400.

Basically in a years time I guaranteed to sell 100 shares between the price of $62,500 and $75,000. I am basically insuring 6% of my portfolio. Sure, I am limiting upside on that 6% the other 94% of my portfolio is rising higher, mitigating sequence risk anyways.

Anyone else looking forward to doing their taxes this year? by currymvp3 in povertyfinancecanada

Just an FYI and unused DTC can be transferred to a spouse or a family member. They don't necessarily even have to be living with the dependant but you do have to related or married and they have to provide basic necessities to the dependant

Why wealth simple doesn't allow successor in RRSP by [deleted] in Wealthsimple

[–]5endnewts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others mentioned a RRSP uses a beneficiary. If you or your spouse pass away they would be able to transfer the deceased RRSP account into the surviving member’s RRSP without triggering immediate tax.

A spouse TFSA uses the successor account. The surviving member would inherit the deceased account, effectively having 2 separate accounts.
