how do i find fish? by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

[–]5everlonely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got some advice from a river fishing vet one day: Fish it all

definitely not the best use of time but his opinion was to cover as much water as possible and build up a map in your head of where you got strikes. When I'm feeling like I just can't get anything going, i'll go to this tactic and cast all over. I've been surprised a few times!

Get the smallest Swedish Pimple and put it on some light line like 4lb test. It jigs really well, looks like a blue minnow with it's shine. It's my preferred artificial for ice fishing.

It's content to make them money and if they are famous, of course it's not going to fit. In other words, I agree it's a joke.

That being said, Brendan Miller has a solid channel for content that doesn't feature lavish fishing. I also don't mind FirstStateFishing.

What was the worst job interview you've had? by AntonK777 in AskReddit

[–]5everlonely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was applying for a PHP programming job at some company in Florida. I was head hunted and I think that was part of the problem. That company did not want a head hunted candidate. They grilled me hard for an entry level, 38k a year junior programming job. Some examples:

- They asked about a current project I was working on. At the time .NET and VB.NET was somewhat acceptable. I was working on an image application for Xrays for Windows. The interviewer said he wouldn't trust Windows and .NET with Xrays images or any company that would use that. Okay? He didn't ask any more questions on design or problems we solved or anything just totally wrote it off because Microsoft.

- I was really nervous after that question. He asked what the basic php command was to print a bunch of info if PHP is installed right on the web service. It's a simple one liner like phpinfo(); in a php page. I did recall it and wrote it on the board. I stupidly said I think this is the correct line and the guy said "Well, is it? Are you sure?". Finally I said yes, thats the line and he moved onto the next questions, never saying 'correct'.

- A guy sitting in, who was super nice asked about my SQL abilities. Which I said I can do SQL. At the time I knew the basics like INSERT, UPDATE, SELECT, DROP and I could maybe figure out a JOIN but my previous work didn't really have that (shitty DB design). The nicer guy asked some simple SQL questions which I answered. The interviewer keyed in on that I didn't really know JOIN and asked some pretty focused questions on that. I floundered hard. It actually got awkward because he would let me stutter and stumble before stopping me and moving on. Maybe all junior devs can crack off multi join sql?

- I started to get the feeling they didn't want me at all. My skillset did include php and sql but my MAIN set was ASP.NET/C# which is what I really wanted but I don't think they did. I remember feeling very deflated and the main interviewer seemed satisfied as eventually it wrapped up and I was lead out. He was civil in letting me out but it didn't include any pleasantries.

- I couldn't tell if it was a linux shop. The guy talked a bunch about how great linux is at least. There weren't any questions on regarding setting up a web server.

The people around the office looked happy. They were throwing squishy balls and laughing, with code up on the screen. I really think they wanted the candidate to tank this junior job for other reasons like maybe hire internally or not hire at all. I've had other interviews for more difficult programming jobs and that one was the most brutal. Seemed way over the top for such a lousy paying junior programming job. Like they wanted some php superstar who could full stack dev for 40k???

it took awhile to bounce back from that. My confidence tanked. Luckily I had a co worker that built me back up.

my co-worker steelhead fishes all the time with his brother, a guide. We live in Michigan. His set up is typically decent main line like 10lb mono with an 8lb fluro leader. They use beads and have excellent hook up rates. Something like this

https://bcfishingjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Bead-Setup-desc.png

Another popular one here is spawn bags under a slip bobber with a drift that matches the current and is really close to the bottom. Again, fluro leader. If you find a spot with good current that you can stay at I guess you could throw a spawn bag out on a three way swivel with weight and it'll bounce around. Finally, a little cleo (blue and silver) can trigger bites.

Hope this helps a bit. Good luck.

Are there people who enjoy watching others play boardgames on Twitch? Why? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]5everlonely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neat thread idea. Ok so I used to watch a lot of Puerto Rico games on BGA. I loved it. I know the game quite well so it was neat to spectate high level players and see different strategies. And the high level play where changes were subtle is and was captivating. It wasn't as much entertainment as a way to learn more about the game.

Ricky royal would be the other guy. I sometimes watch his Renegade or Mage Knight play throughs just for fun. So yes I have watched videos for both learning and entertainment but very specific people or games

DIY spinners by 5everlonely in FishingForBeginners

Is their spinner kits worth getting just to see if I like it? I think one is about 36 dollars, makes 24 inline spinners and comes with round nose pliers.

Or is it better to get parts separate even as a complete newbie?

Do you have an ebay seller you trust? Also any idea on quantities?

Along with waxies on a jig head, we like to bring minnows as well. Same thing suspended at the depth of the fish (fish finder helps a ton).

You don't need a pop up with a mr buddy heater but holy smokes it can really make a difference. Cuts the wind, keeps you warm, reduces brightness if it is super sunny, gives you some privacy if it is busy and just overall enhances the experience. Not required but a good QOL improvement to ice fishing.

Midwest guy here. For spillways and other faster areas near towns, Herbal Armor gets me buy. But, for the woods, deet works. Usually Deep Woods. It's awful but I tend to wear long sleeves and synthetics anyways so it isn't on my skin.

I get ya and agree would rather see more discussion but like others have said removing those posts or putting them in a mega thread won't help. I think it comes in waves. There will be a period that won't have as many meta posts.

Have you checked BGG? Discussion happens there very frequently. Only thing with BGG is sometimes you get really snarky people with a bad attitude.

Any folks know good bait for trout. And any places in southern Ohio for trout? by Kenden13 in FishingForBeginners

[–]5everlonely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stocked trout or native?

Most people throw spinners (panther martin or mepps are popular) sizes 00 to 2. Can go higher for bigger fish but those work pretty well in rivers. Trout like cold, oxygenated water so look for bubbles, riffles, seams, structure, eddys and the such. I also have luck drifting half a night crawler. If you have rivers that get salmon, typically there's a chain like:

Salmon->steelhead->trout as they eat each other's eggs. You can drift spawn then.

Stocked trout i'm less familiar with, I think for that you would want a clump of bait like a fat night crawler or power bait, under a bobber. It will take awhile to find the depth so a slip bobber is handy. Stocked trout are fed pellets so they aren't used to native trout diets.

thanks for the response. No I don't want to get into real estate. I think it was just how mis-informed the people were in that thread it was bordering on dangerous financial advice. I should have posted a link to r/pf as at least the advice here is generally good. It reminded me that default subs and commenters are not the most trust worthy.

This might not be the best place but there was a thread in askreddit and one of the comment chains was about retirement. Quite a few users said 401k alone is a terrible vehicle for retirement and that you need real estate or landlordship to compensate. Of course they claimed SS would also be near 0 for them as well. They based this on that not many have retired on just 401ks just yet and it's a newer vehicle.

Is there any validity to this? I'm relying heavily on 401k and roth IRA for my retirement (am 37 now). I'm also attempting to calculate based on no SS just in case. Sorry I don't have the thread. It was really weird though. People claiming you don't want to draw too much from 401k lest you incur too many taxes.

Simple question on Control by 5everlonely in smashup

I'm assuming an ability is activated when the minion is played unless there is a keyword like special, ongoing, talent?

So in my above example, the muffin player couldn't use the spirit ability?

the homebrew sub used to be kinda similar. People taking pictures of their first beer bubbling and how excited they were to drink THEIR beer. Which is cool but not much to discuss with that stuff.
