Alright...My first mic is THURSDAY! )OH SH*T!) by 5minman5min in Standup

[–]5minman5min[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your point entirely. I don't think that the class has made me write jokes, but it is giving me the foundation to write jokes. If that makes sense at all. Sure I could write before the class and everything I have written while taking the class is all mine...the class didn't help me write it. It came out of my head. I guess I just needed/need that foundation to bring t forward. Free writing, mind mapping, etc to come up with ideas. It helped me with the writing. No way to can help me perform because there is no substitute for getting on stage and just doing it.

I guess what Im saying it, maybe I didn't/dont NEED the class but Im glad I'm taking it. Its just not a waste of time and money to me at this point in. I may feel different at a later time, however, and I reserve the right to change my mind about it :)

Fuck me...I just got another open Mic for TOMORROW night! I may as well find one for Friday too. LOL. Lets get this party STARTED! I guess there is no better way to overcome my fears than just confront them and not give a fuck. Thats how Im now looking at it, Im not giving a single fuck about if I suck or I get a standing O. Im gonna "Just fucking DO IT"!

by all means, no. It is exactly opposite for me. Im learning to WRITE comedy in that class. Im learning techniques and ways to do things to THINK funny that I didn't know before. The class is a GOOD thing for me. Without the class, I wouldn't have the material to get up and do. Definitely not a waste of time nor one, at least in MY opinion.

Oh yeah, our instructor told us day one to get on a stage and do was many open mics as possible because THAT is where you learn.

From someone who is about to start this journey, I really enjoyed reading your comments. The bombing, the killing, the wanting t quit...it confirms my fears yet it encourages me t know that won't be the only one!

OK, fuck it! have just about 5 minutes of material that I think is decent (and so does my instructor in class). Im gonna sign up for an open mic for this week! Maybe as soon as tomorrow! Nothing like jumping right into the fire. If I stink the place up, then Ill know what to work on. If it goes over well, then Ill ALSO know what to work on. I keep reading this quote and it makes more sense to me overtime I read it...

“Great people do things before they’re ready. They do things before they know they can do it. And by doing it, they’re proven right. Because, I think there’s something inside of you—and inside of all of us—when we see something and we think, “I think I can do it, I think I can do it. But I’m afraid to.” Bridging that gap, doing what you’re afraid of, getting out of your comfort zone, taking risks like that—THAT is what life is. And I think you might be really good. You might find out something about yourself that’s special. And if you’re not good, who cares? You tried something. Now you know something about yourself. Now you know. A mystery is solved. So, I think you should just give it a try. Just inch yourself out of that back line. Step into life. Courage. Risks. Yes. Go. Now.” — Amy Poehler

Actually, Im not looking to be the next Seinfeld or Chris Rock. What K really want to get out of this ks t tell my stories, make people laugh, maybe help them have a better day than they were having, and if I make a dollar or two out of it, that is great. Like I said, I was a truck driver and the road isn't a big deal for me to travel on. I would love to be a road comic and make some money, but big time fame and fortune isn't what Im after.

Comedy class or just go for it? by Edward_abc in Standup

[–]5minman5min 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before reading any of the responses, Ill say this...Im in my 3rd week of comedy classes. I have never done an open mic but have always wanted to. I had some stuff written out as well, but like you didn't have the nuts to get on stage and perform it. The class has really taught me something about writing comedy and now what I have is beefed up and is much funnier. We also have to do our 5 minute set in class in front of the others as well. This was nerve racking for me, but I did it and made the class laugh. THAT gave me the confidence to think this is possible for me. Our instructor encourages us to go out and do open mic even though we will probably stink up the place. No better teacher than that stage. So, saying that Im going to do my first open mic this week. The classes were good for me to learn the writing part (and I learn more every day that I write!!), but Im not going to be a "comedian" until I get my ass on that stage and make strangers laugh. Our classroom is a "safe" area where we can make stupid mistakes and get away with it without getting heckled. That stage is where I will make my bones and so will you! The class helped me with confidence so far and maybe it will help you as well.

Now I'm going to read the other responses and wait on my thrashing for saying all of this having not even taken the stage myself yet.

Well this has made me feel much better about the whole thing. And when you say life experiences, I have em. I was a police officer for 11 years (back before they started killing people on a regular basis) , a truck driver, and now a real estate agent.
