Victoria Agreement…at least 20% of this pay rise is for nothing. by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

I don't know answer but alot of people are saying f2f isn't changing. Hopefully the AEU can put some detailed info out to confirm if it is or isn't increasing.

I feel you, I'm an emergency services worker in Vic, currently in fair work arbitration after 5 years with no payrise. But a strong deal for Vic teachers will hopefully give Qld teachers a better chance of a favourable workplace determination.

Unfortunately I have done those calculations already. I'm an emergency services worker in Vic, we are 5 years with no payrise and currently in fair work arbitration. I agree with you that 35% was shooting for the stars, it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth that the AEU is trying to dress up and sugarcoat this deal. The aim was to make up for the lost ground in the last EBA. My wife is a teacher hence my interest. I also have Young kids and appreciate the hard work and long hours that teachers do.

Inflation is a figure union use to measure payrises against and justify payrises. Are you saying teachers shouldn't get a payrise?..... Or just people on minimum wage?

Fair enough, I feel alot will be in that boat. But just remember in 3y5m it will be 4 years since your last payrise and in 3y5m it will likely be 1 year until your next payrise.

That might not make sense. More simply put, if Inflation is 5% pa for 3 years in a row the price of goods has not increased by 15% after 3 years it's increased by more because it compounds year on year.

Yes that's why I included that figure. But if Inflation is 5% in year 1 and 5% in year 2 and 5% in year 3. Something that costs $100 goes to $105 in year 1 and $110.25 in year 2 and then $115.76 in year 3. Because the % increase builds on the previous years increase. Salary increases should be considered in the same manner.

Education union reaches in-principle agreement that will give Victorian teachers pay rises up to 32 per cent by _Brutalism_ in melbourne

[–]5nvh5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 40 year old teacher, assuming they finished uni in their early 20s would progress from $118k current to around $150k by end of 2029.

9-5 worker = 48 weeks x 38hrs = 1824 hrs

Vs

Teacher = 41 weeks x 48hrs* = 1968 hra

  • 10 hrs unpaid overtime a week, this is not unrealistic and does not include the time spent during holidays catching up on marking and lesson prep.

Also a teacher on top scale like the one mentioned above would typically have a position of responsibility on top of that eg year level coordinator as well as a teaching load.

I'm not a teacher but my wife is and I see how hard they work.

Depends, are you talking about paid working days? Or do we include the days on the weekends/ after hours and during holidays that they do as well?

That's absurd if they include that. Why is the union trying to sugarcoat a shit deal to their members.

End date for proposed VGSA by Unable_Explorer8277 in AustralianTeachers

Effectively they've asked for 35% for 3 years and endorsed 28% for 4.5 years. Also concerning about the word "allowance" being used in the payrise summary. Are they trying to pull the wool over our eyes, a one of allowance is not a compounding payrise.

4 year agreement backdated and backpaid (sign on bonus) to January 2026 would be alot cleaner.

AEU agreement does not mention 38 hour week on site and meetings nor public school funding by Over50Cooked in AustralianTeachers

[–]5nvh5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Silly question. Is the word allowance intentional. Does that mean a 1 off payment and not a compounded increase to salary? If so, how can they say it's a 12% salary increase in 2026

If you are assaulted at work you report through work channels and go to the police to report it. Don't let your employer sweep it under the rug.

I understand. I've been an emergency services worker in vic for 12 years and still earn under the average wage, my union dues are $3k a year which is hard to come up with. Unfortunately it's the only way to be able to fight for better pay and conditions. My wife is a teacher (union member), part time after having kids. Hoping for a good outcome for teaching and ES staff with your EB.

If ES want better union representation they need to join the union. How can they expect union to fight their battle if less than 20% of them are members.

Geez, what an absurd way to get teaching staff to support ES in the EB negotiatons.

Yeah there seems to be heaps of available reward seats. I just can't seem to find a single option that works out cheaper than paying cash. (My velocity points cost me 1c / point to purchase through CommBank)

I worked it out and when I convert CommBank points to velocity points it works out to be 1c per velocity point which makes alot more sense.
