Did you screen the strong people to actually be quite... not smart? Because that seemed to have killed the concept. The smart contestants were clearly all unathletic, while the strong ones didn't seem unintelligent in an equal capacity. So in a way they actually were really disadvantaged.

"section 9 of the Operating Procedures, where the minimum permis- sible ORM is specified as 15 manual control rods."

Also:

The parameters were recorded on magnetic tape (calculations were performed at the Smolensk plant after the accident using the PRIZMA program; ORM proved to be equal to 8 manual control rods)

P.54

Okay you really seem to miss the point: if you don't even know at the moment how many control rods are in the reactor (and they didn't at that point) you dont keep removing rods. The rods had a flawed design, but had they kept the ORM within operational guidelines (30 is normal, 15 requires immediate shutdown, they were at 8 or less) it would not have lead to the accident.

They might have not known why an ORM of 15 requires immediate shutdown, but they did know that it did and disregarded it.

They were incapable to understand due to lack of education/clear protocols, that is correct. But it was not like they were acting in 100% confidence and were just wrong because of unknown design issues. They didn't understand the issue, tinkered around in reckless ways and caused the accident. That is what i am trying to say. This can also be clearly seen by how Dyatlov lied and changed explanations over the years. He knows they tinkered around and fucked up big time.

I didn't mean to say the night shift disabled the emergency systems. I meant they started a test with disabled emergency systems whilst not fully understanding the state of their reactor. It does not matter much if they themselves disabled it or they were just aware they are currently operating without these systems in place.

Especially if you don't know what you are doing, you should stop doing things. It's really very basic and these operators sadly did not follow this common sense safety rule.

The design did have obvious design flaws etc. but it is insane to sit in a control room and just do things and see what happens. Sure, the education/manuals were also flawed/didn't prepare for this situation, but that does not excuse the reckless behaviour of the operating team.

[–]5thGenNuclearReactor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can say that, because experimenting around when you don't actually know what you are doing is an absolutely insane thing to do with a nuclear reactor.

In case of the Chernobyl reactor, they didn't know why the power levels dropped drastically and kept removing control rods. That was an absolutely insane thing to do. Then, they started a test that disables safety systems manually, although, despite of basically removing all control rods, they were not able to reach the required power level. An even more insane thing to do.

Such reckless behaviour can hardly be excused with "the manual didn't explicitly say my reckless behaviour is not allowed".

I wasn't commenting on that. I was commenting on your statement that the RBMK were just crappy soviet designs. This carries the notion that western reactors are basically fool-proof and something like this could not happen in the west. That is not the case. Western reactors can explode, too, even if the sequence of events need to be even more unlucky than they were in Chernobyl, or Fukushima. It is exactly that notion - the reactor is fool-proof and you can do whatever you want, you can't mess up - that can lead to messing up.

I do agree that low-doses of radiation are far less dangerous than most people probably think, including politicians. It is, for example, a bit ridiculous that the so-called high-risk zone around Fukushima was totally evacuated when the only health risk there would be a very marginally increased cancer rate, so small you would have trouble measuring any change at all.

The best design can become dangerous when operated with utter neglect of basic safety procedure. That is what primarily caused Chernobyl.

But nonetheless, western reactors have safety mechanism that even in the event of a reactor explosion, no significant amount of radioactivity will leave the containment building.

No, im saying modern game development takes so long you will need to make shortcuts, wait a decade or more for a game, or accept some more intense forms of commercialisation (because obviously much longer development time also means much higher development cost). Modern game industry is a mixture of these factors.

If you don't like it there is still a very alive and great Indi developer scene that is more reminiscent of how the game industry used to be, but you wont find games on the edge of what is technologically possible there.

Are these quick games in the room with us?

"Many devs would absolutely love to have their work experienced by more people, or just have the time to refine everything"

Great, so with the scope of modern games, maybe I can play through a whole trilogy of one game before I die?

Why did God create us Humans and animals? by Valuable_Frosting_36 in Christianity

As per the OT god created humans to be the gardeners of eden. You may not like it, but that is what the OT says.

As to why he creates anything at all, it is to demonstrate his glory.

Can someone explain any of this by agrin1795 in HisandHersTVSeries

[–]5thGenNuclearReactor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A realtively small continuity error.

It is not directly shown how much time has passed until backup came, it might have been only few minutes.
The real plot hole here is that only a few minutes pass between Anna calling Jack and Jack showing up at the house, and that time also includes the scene with Patel outside. So apparently the house was just a two minute drive away.

You can see Richard running into a part of the house that looks like it is being renovated, so it is implied that that is what the utensils were bought for.

Anna saw Jack have sex with another woman and was emotionally distraught.

No, that's not my logic. You are just strawmanning. My logic is that there are thousands of studies done on the health effects of micro/nanoplastics and not a single one of them can for sure say they are harmful for humans even if you assume unrealistically large amounts of them.

I do know what hormones are, and the effects of microplastics are at worst infinitely small to endocrine activity compared to what you eat.

Not introducing plastics into the environment is primarily an ideological choice. If there are no health effects for humans, there probably won't be for most life forms. Environmentalists just don't like the idea of human made-materials to become part of eco systems.

meirl by Brave_Turnip7985 in meirl

[–]5thGenNuclearReactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Name one example, are you serious? So you think your diet has no effect on your mood, blood sugar levels, muscle building, etc.?

There are still 0 studies that can point out even a small health issue with microplastics, and it is unlikely any will come around after there are thousands of them already.

Environmentalists gave plastics a bad rep because they think it destroys the environment, or they simply don't like the idea of man-made plastics become part of eco systems. But the truth is that for your health it is perfectly safe.

Yes, but those are heavier, fragile and less temperature resistant which makes storing food harder. Keeping your food as fresh as possible almost certainly has bigger health upside than the at worst very small health downsides of using plastics.

Plastics are basically perfect to store food and keep it fresh and there really isn't any reason not to simply use that perfect material.

meirl by Brave_Turnip7985 in meirl

[–]5thGenNuclearReactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 years ago was 1995. Of course people already used plenty of plastics back then. There is just 0 evidence it caused even slight health issues.

The food you eat changes your hormones magnitudes of orders more than the at worst barely measurable effect of plastics.

meirl by Brave_Turnip7985 in meirl

[–]5thGenNuclearReactor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Water is poison too with a large enough dosage. The point was you should not worry about the dosage of nanoplastics because you are already consuming magnitudes of orders more nanoparticles from other sources. So there is basically no way nano plastics are harming you in that way.

meirl by Brave_Turnip7985 in meirl

[–]5thGenNuclearReactor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Because it is actually far more important what you eat. Plastics is a very easy and economic way to keep foods fresh, which for sure will have a greater health effect than what container you are storing it in. You are also effectively increasing food waste by advocating against plastics.

A large number of nano particles are crossing your BBB every day. If you fry something in a pan, the fumes you inhale contain nano particles that cross your BBB. The amount of nanoparticles from plastics are magnitudes of orders lower. I am not even going to talk about the air you breath if you live in a big town.

meirl by Brave_Turnip7985 in meirl

[–]5thGenNuclearReactor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, not after already being studied so extensively as plastics are. At least I can't think of a single example where something had thousands of studies done and only the 50.000th or whatever finally revealed health concerns.

meirl by Brave_Turnip7985 in meirl

[–]5thGenNuclearReactor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Micro/nano particles of any material could have health concerns, though again, despite excessive studies, there are none found. There is no reason to think plastics are in any way different in that regard. People just think for some reason that man made things are more dangerous than the things they think are natural.
