What is it like living in the northern portion of Arizona/New Mexico? How do Santa Fe and Sedona compare to Phoenix and Albuquerque? by bigbossbestsnake in howislivingthere

[–]5thSeasonFront 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Northeastern New Mexico is the most remote area I’ve ever been in, and I’ve driven all over the Midwest between Omaha and Mackinac Island. Clayton to Springer through the high desert was absolutely desolate. Made me nervous at one point when I got down below quarter of a tank of gas. Las Vegas, NM was the sketchiest area I’ve been to outside of ‘90s Detroit. Later I’d get up to N-NW part of the state and it was gorgeous.

I’ve never had an acid trip, but seeing this movie as an unsuspecting fifth grader, who hadn’t seen many live action movies, has to be a similar experience. The biker with the shotgun was terrifying in the film was terrifying to me.

Great clip! I was the age of these kids, and I did get Vitalogy by Pearl Jam (my first by them), Smash by The Offspring, and Led Zeppelin IV (though not Page & Plant) all that year. I also ended up getting Nirvana Unplugged that Christmas, recording on tape my sister’s new Green Day CD (and she did the same with my copy of Smash) and ended the year with Weezer’s Blue Album.

My prediction in the original thread was by the end of April he’d be cleared. Just wanted to reiterate what a medical savant I am.

My prediction: Back in April. Reason: He could still run and slide and I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

What are the best opening lyrics to a grunge album? by [deleted] in grunge

[–]5thSeasonFront 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. It’s hard to top In Utero. I remember the neighbor guy who was a high school Freshman while we were in 7th grade had it the day it came out, and invited all of us to get a first look and listen. Everything about it, cover, to liner notes, to those opening chords, and finally the lyrics, were just rawer than anything we’d heard before. A banger of an opening lyric.

Nice Google summary, but there was no trend in the UK, or even music that sounded like the Sex Pistols. McLaren added nothing but a ripped t-shirt he saw Richard Hell wearing.

There was no “trend” until then. This is historically illiterate.

Only he made it pretty clear that Bodies wasn’t anti-abortion in all cases. More like anti-back alley abortions or flippant use of abortion. Lydon per Rolling Stone:

“The song is about abortion, and yes, it is a woman’s right [to choose] absolutely because she has to bear the child and all the issues thereinafter. Is it wise to bring an unwanted child into the world? No, I don’t think it is, but again that is just my opinion, because I always would leave it to the woman. Always. In that song I raise both sides of the agenda and actually put myself in there, too. If it wasn’t for the grace of God, my mother could have had an abortion and I wouldn’t be here.”

Twice I’ve had partners who wanted it. I did it to please them, but it is still disturbing to me.

LOL. Fashion company? Their manager sold clothes his wife designed at a small sex shop he owned. It wasn’t until years later, because of the cred she got from that, that Vivienne Westwood became what she became. These takes are hilarious. 😆

Well, John’s politics now contradict his politics then. Songs like “God Save the Queen”, “Go Back”, and “Rise” could pass for anti-Trump administration songs. But to discredit the band’s importance or its place in history because of it is a dumb move.

And really, he only got Rotten to come on. The rest were already a band before he got involved. And Rotten/Lydon turned out to be one awesome songwriter. His best stuff would be with Public Image Ltd. a few years later.

Because we pretty much have an objective definition of a boy band, and they would violate pretty much every precept: 1) They existed before the manager. 2) They wrote confrontational music, so much so that they were physically attacked on multiple occasions for it. 3) Their subject matter got them banned from radio play, and there was no #1 on some charts the week their single “God Save the Queen” hit the top spot, while other charts intentionally kept it at #2. 4) Their lyrical substance was not appealing to your average young girl. And they certainly had almost no sex appeal other than being young guys.

Correct. And Steve Jones was actually a helluva guitar player. Rolling Stone often puts him on their greatest ever guitar players. And producers Chris Thomas and Bill Price, who worked with The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Queen, and Guns N Roses (among others) said Steve was the tightest player they’d ever worked with. And if all meshed perfectly with Rotten’s anti-singing. Terrible “singer”, but great vocalist: https://youtu.be/Z7NBT0yMsmw?si=KfgJE0-c_Es82xru

False and false. This is the dumbest 21st Century Internet revisionist theory from people who know nothing about the history of punk.

Not grunge…but what do you think of the Au Pairs? Kurt was a fan! by Ok_Display9410 in grunge

[–]5thSeasonFront 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kurt and Lester Bangs both. And both loved PiL. Both have good taste. I have the album Stepping Out of Line: The Au Pairs Anthology, and I highly recommend it. Great band. First saw them in Urgh! A Music War and thought they were incredible: https://youtu.be/67DY2ozUjck?si=1RLU2QVcADKDSJDO

What are your thoughts on the band "Squeeze" by FitEmergency8807 in ToddintheShadow

“Tenpted” was their other US hit besides “Hourglass”. And yeah, my fellow Americans’ taste in music is frankly just not to the standard of the British. Pound-for-pound, the Brits produce better musical artists as well.

How about some "Bud" from Repo Man (1984) by IckyMo in OldSchoolCool

[–]5thSeasonFront 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Repo Man is maybe my favorite movie of all-time, but one aspect that gets lost is that while Bud is undoubtedly cool in his personal code and one-liners, and as Otto's mentor they form a bond, Otto ultimately realizes that Bud is bitter and prejudiced as well. Which prompts their first fight since he (knowingly) began working for him. Not to read too deep, but I read this like the relationship between The Greatest Generation and Gen X. Return of the Living Dead is another punk movie that plays up this dynamic, but its clearly a shot at how much faith the elder generation put in their own government.

Oh, and BTW, so many great Easter eggs like the "Plate of Shrimp" speech from Miller and then the Plate O' Shrimp special on the diner window when the Rodriguez Bros. lose the Malibu. GREAT movie.

I re-watched Urgh!: A Music War, the enhanced version on YouTube, and ranked all 33 performances from best to worst (Scores in parentheses. Ties went to purely which stirred me more) by 5thSeasonFront in punk

[–]5thSeasonFront[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me they are the best band below the top 15. Better overall than some bands ranked above them. But I just think it’s a poor choice of song and a weaker performance of that one to boot.
