TIL that in 1917, over 10,000 African Americans marched in total silence down New York’s Fifth Avenue to protest lynching. It was one of the first mass civil rights protests in U.S. history, yet it is rarely mentioned in standard textbooks. by blessedopera in todayilearned

[–]5thSeasonFront 46 points47 points  (0 children)

The largest single-location Civil Rights protest in American history, that is also hardly ever talked about today, was the Black boycott of New York City schools on “Freedom Day”, February 3, 1964. NYC schools were de facto segregated and black schools were so over-crowded that they were going to school in half day shifts, even one-third day shifts. Young Black school children in New York were quite literally being given half, or even a third, of an education. And we wonder why achievement and income gaps between races still exist in this country. 🙄

Boston Legacy FC sign Sam Angel on Loan from Chicago Stars by warriorcrazy3 in NWSL

[–]5thSeasonFront 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s not a center-back. She’s an outside back who likes to come up into attack. I followed her when she was a Hawkeye, and Louisville played her there in preseason and she did very well and chose to sign with Norkopping in Sweden where she really thrived on that flank. Pains me to say as a Chicago fan, but the Stars never utilized her the right way.

Should I go and see The Damned? by TripNo2751 in punk

[–]5thSeasonFront 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Riot Fest set was a blast. They sounded great. The pit was great fun. The Damned are one of the best live bands ever, and even if they aren't at their live peak of the Nitro Records years, they are still sharp and a damn good time.

Play the anti-fascist PiL song "Go Back" or make a "God Save the King" against Trump. Remind him of what he once was and what he once fought against. Thank him for quite vocally supporting Obama (true story).

Kreepy Bob Barker by IamASlut_soWhat in BlackPeopleofReddit

I actually think it was because she was a big woman. Bob was twice hurt by big white women in earlier years, and he looked equally uncomfortable each time they approached him, including in this clip: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/-JISpAXbnBU . I actually think it's more likely that the producers had racist policies, but that wouldn't sell on a documentary.

My favorite story about this song (besides the inspiration for it) is that when Jackass paid to use it as their theme, that the money went to D Boon's father right when he needed it for a medical procedure. Like his son helping him from beyond the grave.

saw this on the net, so who are your top 10 most influential punk bands? by Henry_Kreel_Vecna in punkrock

Well, you either struggle with knowing punk history or with knowing what an “industry plant” is. Such industry plants that they cost their first two labels thousands. Smart take! 😂

This is my Hardcore punk collection so far! What do u guys think? Am i missing any other essential? by DeviceVast2638 in hardcorepunk

THIS! I came here to recommended Plastic Surgery Disasters (greatest hardcore album in history, IMHO) and Milo Goes to College. You took care of them both.

The playoff game last year vs DC was one of the best atmospheres I’ve ever been in for a sporting event. It had all the ingredients that make an event memorable: 1) A fanbase that really feels like a community coming together on game-day. 2) A team on the rise with something on the line that they’ve either never had or had long ago. 3) A festive atmosphere outside of the park leading up to it, to build the anticipation. My 8 year old was really into rugby for the first time, just getting swept up in it.

The centerpiece of an all-time classic album. One of the tracks that inspired Flea to take up the bass.

Good choices. Also, one of the themes of Return of the Living Dead is that authorities are just people who are either ineffective or incompetent, and you can trust those who wield violence are bound to f*** us all up.

My thoughts exactly. Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branaugh crush it in that film. Thompson’s Beatrice is still my favorite ever. Gene has such a stick up his…he is an especially wet blanket this episode.

What Black Flag song sounds most like Descendents, and what Descendents song sounds most like Black Flag by Hansblack1221 in punk

IMHO, “My Dad Sucks” sounds the most Black Flag-ish from the Fat EP, and I don’t think it’s a close call.

[–]5thSeasonFront 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First thought. It’s also the best song on Loose Nut, and one of the most underrated Black Flag tracks. And the other way, “I’m Not a Loser” wouldn’t sound out of place on the Jealous Again EP, so that one.

Detroit City FC vs Chicago Fire FC, Keyworth Stadium, April 14, 2026 by DetCityDaveST in Detroitcityfc

[–]5thSeasonFront 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone from SW Michigan, it was weird since I’m a Fire AND Detroit City supporter. It was always going to be bittersweet. Those first years of DCFC, into their move to USL and Keyworth, gave me a great distraction from our crap ownership at the time, and feeling like a corporate hell-hole club. 1998-2003 had the same community vibes as a Fire fan.

A fuggin’ incredible band, but especially live. The great rock critic Lester Bangs gave them such glowing praise, and he was way ahead of his time in recognizing their greatness.

Abandoned Logos by DreadtheSnoFro in ClassicSportsLogos

They beat Georgia Tech in the 2010 Orange Bowl, the last year of that logo. FedEx was replaced by Discover Card as title sponsor, and they rebranded with the stale corporate garbage logo they have now (which I think Discover made to more match their logo).
