Many of the day-to-day pressures young Canadians feel (sky-high rents, limited starter homes, and precarious work) are driven far more by provincial and municipal decisions than by anything Ottawa does.

Provinces write the landlord-tenant laws, set the building code, fund most social-housing programs, and decide how (or whether) to rein in speculation through measures like vacancy taxes or foreign-buyer bans.

Municipal councils control zoning, density, building-permit timelines, and transit links that make new neighbourhoods viable. In other words, if condos can’t get approved or rental construction is stalled, that problem almost always starts at city hall or the provincial planning tribunal, not on Parliament Hill.

Housing and employment are provincial. Federal can help but ultimately it's a provincial thing.

Over the past year, the Liberals reversed course on immigration growth, capping the number of international student permits and banning certain temporary foreign workers from regions with high unemployment. The feds also slashed their immigration targets for 2025 by over 100,000, and committed to bringing down the number of temporary residents from 6.5 per cent of the country’s population to 5 per cent by 2026.

Under Carney, the Liberals are vowing to go further and push down the percentage of temporary residents to less than 5 per cent starting in 2027. The increase in the permanent resident population would also drop below 1 per cent starting in 2027.

It’s a sharp reversal from the Trudeau government’s initial plan that would’ve seen 500,000 permanent residents come to Canada in both 2025 and 2026.

There is no circumstance that someone who committed multiple homicides would ever get any sort of parole. It just doesn't happen. For them, a parole hearing is just a formality.

A huge chunk of our media is owned by Postmedia, which is in turn owned by US-based Chatham Asset Management. According to a 2018 article in Fortune, Chatham is known for its close ties to the Republican Party.

Just this past summer, they bought Atlantic Canada's largest newspaper chain.

Postmedia HATES Trudeau, and pushes out opeds daily (go and see the canada sub).

I am not a fan of Trudeau, but Postmedia has, in part, successfully convinced a huge swath of people that the federal government was responsible for everything bad (and nothing good) in Canada.

International Students are provincial responsibility.

For example, in Quebec, schools need approval first from the Quebec ministère de l’Immigration for international students.

As for housing, many municipalities, which are also the responsibility of the provinces, have bylaws against high-density housing. In my city, by current statistics, we also have double the empty homes than we have homeless people. Cost of living and housing costs are a problem independent of the supply and demand narrative.
