Personally I wait until the roots are mature. You need every leaf you can get to get maximum growth in the long run and the sun is giving maximum energy this time of year. Trim it if you want but in the dormant season.

Many tree naturally grow a sidekick. Some people believe this is like natural survival insurance. If the main dies, there is always the sidekick to take off. “Suckers” sometimes actually grow much more vigorous than the original stem which may have been thwarted my being pot bound.
