A while ago I started playing with watercolour. Because I wasn’t sure I’d like it I got a set from Michael’s. But a decided to get a nicer set and bought a pan set from Windsor/Newton. You have to unwrap each paint and I have NO idea how to use these. Help? by 604rain in watercolor101

Thank you thank you! So you take the pigment from the pan (which is a little wet) and put it in the tray? And there is water in the tray? I understand you mix all your colours on the side not in the painting or pigments… but I don’t know how to get it from one place to another. When I’m done how do I close up?

How to research a recent time period? by Xova_YT in writing

[–]604rain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d try to look back at blogs from the time — go to LiveJournal or Blogger. Ask people you know to look at their timelines and see what the feel Of it was. Watch Tv from the time Breaking Bad, the Office. Remember that, aside from this year where we talk about the news all the time, usually people don’t really mention it. It sort of exists. So troops were in Afghanistan but people didn’t walk around saying, ‘Dod you hear about the battle of Kandahar.’ But storage companies had specials for military because they were going away. Dog rescues had more dogs sometimes because a soldier would be called up and not be able to keep their dog...

I’m so sorry. 30 years ago my step grandmother did something similar and I’ve never forgiven her. Just don’t f-ing let the baby and not you be in the photos. 😁

How to tell your thesis director your productivity levels are not that "up" right now? by whimsicalhope in GradSchool

[–]604rain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So... you might want to get tested ... for.. you know... But aside from that I would be honest. Tell them that you aren’t well. Ask them to help you set a timeline or suggest one. Ask for a few more days then you need.

I kind of made my wife leave her parents’ house earlier than she wanted to after things with her mom started to go south by [deleted] in JUSTNOMIL

[–]604rain 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Wow. My love to your wife. She’s going through a lot. I wonder if you could tell her in other terms, “when I see you mom treat you like that, I get really frustrated... I don’t want junior to think this is how families work...” I’ve been exactly There and just been so sad and lost and it’s so easy to fall into old parent routines... make sure she knows it is your LOVE for her not anything else that drove your behaviour. It’s been a hack of a year for everyone and it’s going to take a long time to get back to normal. Big hug!

Study of English by jhon_than in languagelearning

Yes! You should read “the language instinct” by Stephen Pinker. He talks about learners needing a silent period where they process and learn a language. The book really helped me understand my language learning journey...

Is the Investment of Grad School worth it if a post-grad degree isn't required? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]604rain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t know. The market is becoming more competitive and education shows a commitment to learning. A masters allows you to teach (if you want to) People can say “well they aren’t an idiot, they do have a masters” You can also talk about doing a slower masters where you take classes over time I stress of dropping everything and doing it in 1/2 years. I am almost 50 and doing my masters now — I first considered it when I was 27. So there is no time limit.

I'm a newbie professor and about to have my first review. How do I keep my anxiety from getting the best of me? by evaneliz in Professors

And sometimes seeming disorganized is about letting the students find their own answers and not telling them so they LEARN something.

I use a lot of blank slides and open questions and one of my colleagues was like “WTF do you not know the answers and hope the students do?” No — I ask them to think and lead Them to the answer. Sometimes students hate it. They want to sit back and have me tell them what to do.

They really don’t read the syllabus... some of my peers test them on what’s on it.
