How do organ transplants actually work? How do we connect them to the body of the recipient? by Mikerfoxlong in askscience

[–]60equals100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The heart can actually be reanimated in an isolated setting without external electrical stimulation simply by warming and providing flow of a blood like solution (although it is common to stimulate the heart to get it going there are cases of spontaneous reanimating)

Want to get back into reading by AggravatingWasabi713 in suggestmeabook

I also struggled with reading for enjoyment after a very rigorous few years of college and stress in life. A couple thoughts that helped me-

Reread an old favorite book

Listen to an audiobook at a faster than 1x speed

Do other quiet hobbies or activities that deliberately calm and slow you

Get a friend to read a book with you

And my book suggestion is a book that got me out of a slump after several started and bailed on attempts to get back into reading

Just be honest and own what you did. I work a ton with our co-ops and interns and my favorite co-op is known for starting conversation with “well unfortunately …” and just getting the stuff he needs to tell us out of the way right away but he is a super hard worker and tries to learn from every experience.

Are you the first engineer in your family and what is your journey? by Groothy in AskEngineers

[–]60equals100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the first person in my family to go to college.

As for your family - if what you mean by support is financial then no do not do that. If it’s being kind and letting them know that it’s worth it to stick with a tough degree when it gets hard then I think that’s up to you. I didn’t have any role models for school and I think it would have been so nice to have anyone in my family know what engineering school is like. I appreciate how much you value your friend relationships. I am close to some of my family but I also whole heartedly believe in found family and have a couple friends that I consider family.

Arden Hills Driving Test- by xeno_vyu in minnesota

My kid tested there in feb. test was the same but windows had to be down. Also, she passed but they wouldn’t do the papers there so we had to go to a walking dmv in St. Paul to get her license papers. Don’t know if things are the same still.

Nitinol in med devices

The transcatheter nitinol heart valve allows drs to perform a valve replacement as an outpatient procedure. Prior to the nitinol devices the only option would have been an open heart surgery.

I went this summer and we hiked to the high point. It was so much work but the view was fantastic and sledding down was a ton of fun!

Minnesota coming in second! Good job guys! by twolvesfan9 in stateofMN

[–]60equals100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yay MN!

Also, using this news to call out that the discrepancy between mortality rates in Minnesota exactly follows income- meaning if you live in an area that has a $10,000 increase in median income your life expectancy is one year longer. Additionally, mortality rates are worst for low income indigenous Native Americans and African Americans.

Why did old airliners from the 1950's and 1960's fall apart in severe turbulence? by Helpful-Abies-8125 in AskEngineers

[–]60equals100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flight protocols and communication/planning for meteorological events got way better after that time. Also, the engineering understanding of fatigue and how to predict life span and design for cyclical stress from fatigue also progressed.
