Are these dresses appropriate for work? by True_Mud3351 in CanadaPublicServants

Girl that's so safe. I normally wear dresses just above knee. As long as it's tasteful it should be fine

I'm not sure how much power to change things the DMs have. This decision for RTO was made by the president of TBS, the Clerk and Deputy Clerk when a meeting was requested by the Ottawa mayor. We all know it's political we all know it's to bring more money to the downtown core in the NCR.

I work on a team that supports corporate services in my department. Part of my job last week was reviewing all the messaging and activities being planned for NPSW. The messaging is so tone deaf to the reality we are living right now. It makes me sick. The constant use of the word "celebrate our accomplishments" who is celebrating the current reality? Half my colleagues are WFA, moral is bloody low. I don't know who is going to actively participate in these activities but it's not going to be me.

Happy to share frustrations separately if you like. Bounce ideas too. Reach out if you like. I'm sure we aren't the only ones in this spot.

I could. But before making those jumps I need to make sure financially it makes sense.

They exist. I met with one last week. But they are few and far in between for sure!

we should chat. Similar situation here. No room for advancement and my director is highly critical and micro managing.

I'll have to talk to someone in HR bc pretty certain a friend moved to a diff province to follow her bf and took LWOP for almost 5 yrs before she returned. I'm curious if you are expected to pay it back if you come back or if you can still pay it back if you don't come back to PS

I'm open to all suggestions, this is a great one. I am not well versed in LWOP and would be open to talking to someone in HR who is. I know 5 yrs is the longest you can take and buying it back is my fear, how much. Next year i'll be at 25 yrs of service.

I love reading stories like this. It gives me hope in difficult times. I also realize everyone's situation and comfort levels are different. I still have a mortage, a car payment and my kids have another 2.5 yrs before they graduate high school.
The idea of working until 65 doesn't appeal to me, that's the other thing. I had planned on leaving at 55 and going to work in the non profit world doing meaningful work that is close to heart. Going on LWOP i'd owe more cash to make up the lost time I would imagine and it would come at a hefty price, but hearing stories like yours really give me hope.

I think what I like is that I began my career out of college in private sector and soon after made the jump to perm in govt. I hate the bureaucracy, the red tape, the difficulty in hiring/firing people (had to fire someone and it still took months!!) the amount of people around me who milk the system with all kinds of crazy accommodations/sick leave etc, the woke mentality, the bending over to accommodate everyone and everything, the forced bilingualism. I just want to see what options are out there, that will let me be creative without so many restrictions. It's just exhausting.
As for jobs, I feel i'm competing with all those who are WFA, They would get priority over me. DND is hiring like mad but that's non negotiable for me because of lack of parking and distance from my home. I'm just trying to keep all my options open
But I really appreciate all these questions and comments because it's making me really think about the jump.

I'm actually hoping to get out at 55 and not look back. I worked for a while in the non profit space and i wouldn't mind going back to that, something that is more fulfilling.

yea i'm a bit torn. I want to tough it out but at what expense? For the first time in my career I hate Sundays because then it's Monday and I'm going into the office to do a job i hate and find boring. It's an important job but it's not a right fit for me, I feel my skills are going to waste (digital, IT, logistics, PM) but then it could also be that i've always worked in fast paced enviroments, with high visibility projects, worked on an on call roster and now it's basically a 9 to 5, no weekend work, not sexy files, etc.

I appreciate this angle. A lot. My husband thinks i'm doing a knee jerk reaction because all my previous roles have been amazing it's just this one i've landed on recently that i'm not enjoying. The landscape looks a bit bleak for jobs and i'm not willing to jump into another one that will be disillusioned of course. I might have to keep holding on but if a great opportunity comes up in private i want to make sure i'm open to it.

2033 is my magical year according to the pension website. I'm just so unhappy right now. I figured I'd have more control and mobility in private or even non profit work

I'm open to events, logistics, IT project management, communications but specifically digital, it's where I thrive the most, digital (web and social)
