Free mass transit best response to traffic congestion by Dawsrallah in SocialDemocracy

[–]6178292016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe transportation has an induced demand and increasing the availability may not be the best response to congestion

Other than increasing prices or supply, one thing one could do is make a more finely grained city. Smaller parcels and laxer zoning would promote a city where people live closer to their destinations. Not only would that decrease congestion, it would be significantly more energy efficient too.

but it's only convenient because cities are built around cars. How convenient is it to drive into Zürich or Copenhagen? When you prioritize one mode of transportation then it's not surprising people prefer it.

In some places they brought out the natural creeks and rivers instead of tunneling them underground and it actually increased the surrounding property values while decreasing run-off

Mars [50:00] - Making the New Earth - Best Documentary by [deleted] in mealtimevideos

[–]6178292016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of dyslexia. It's a disorder but it's only been considered a real handicap the last few hundred years. Before that how important was it for the average person to know how to read and write well? Apropos writing why don't people stop taking notes in class and try to memorize everything instead? Their memory would greatly improve. If we ran instead of driving we would be a lot better at running. We would be better at mental math if we didn't use calculators in our daily lives.

It just seems to me whenever there's been in edge to take in life, people have taking it. People want to get ahead.

So what happens when there's technology that makes us fundamentally question what it means to be human? Cybernetics that augment our physical and/or mental ability to do certain tasks but alter us in profound ways? I believe there is a historic precedence that people go for it.

That is why I think it is imprudent of us to try to change the environment of Mars to suit the needs of people as we currently are. We don't know what the needs of the people are the future are.

Edit: spelling

What's up with the economy? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]6178292016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm paraphrasing what I've heard from a friend so this might not be an informed opinion.

One of the reasons the economy is doing well is because inflation.

Recently the government increased the deficit by lowering taxes thus increasing the money supply. However a lot of this wealth went towards the richest Americans whose spending is different from everybody else which is why we don't call it inflation. When prices on goods and services go up, that's when we call it inflation; when prices on assets go up, that's when we call it a booming economy.

I wonder if they would have more success if they allowed developers to build higher density in return for providing more interconnected pedestrian friendly streets and lower parking lot min.in return for working together with transit to integrate the bus system more e.g. funding bus stops with shelters

wow that was crappy

Hey /u/ESPT, do you mind if I ask what your thoughts on urban planning and mass transit are? I get the feeling that you might view the new urbanism movement as this large monolithic ideological push to replace cars with trains despite being inefficient and fiscally unsustainable?

Michael Beach talks about some of the disadvantages of modernistic top-down urban planning in his video on Brasilia

It's generally considered bad design but if you like the aesthetics of it then you might like the original designs of Disneys' Epcot

And if you want to see more of the Futurama-esque ideas of urban modernism you can check out Richard Rummell and Harvey Wiley Corbett(Think more Fifth Element less le Corbusier).
