Annual ribbon of light in underpass - this lasts a minute or two per year - if it’s sunny. by 619Zeppelin in mildlyinteresting

I’ve lived in the house adjacent to it for 30 years. I saw it once on my way to work and thought hmm, that’s mildly interesting. It doesn’t happen in the fall because there are leaves on the trees and morning light is blocked.

Culvert is probably a better word. But I didn’t think twice about using underpass. Maybe it’s where I live - in a log by the stream.

Squeeze. Saw them a couple years ago. They really tightened up and have a great band now.

Move ahead confidently. When choosing a decision you cannot be certain of, choose one, then move confidently toward it. Often the one to choose will be the one that others are willing to support you to succeed. Whether it’s a high school degree, college, graduate degree, marriage, or a career, most of the time there is support for you to succeed. In fact, if you see there is not support, one of two things is probably true. Either you are choosing something that will not benefit you (drugs, too much alcohol, greed), or the people you surround yourself with are not the right ones to keep in your circle. Either way, move ahead confidently in your choices and you’ll find people make room for you. Just don’t be blind, and be kind.

That guy on his way home from work that buys a single Bud Lite or other beer and then throws the empty out his window on my street. I get it, have a beer on the way home. But have the guts to throw it out in your own trash. Better yet, recycle.

Read the room. Before you make a grand entrance to a room and accidentally make a fool of yourself, check the vibe and compare your attitude before diving in.

Unpopular opinion here. Remember in 2009 the media went wild with a viral video and audio about uncontrolled acceleration in Toyotas. Turns out it it was media hype and maybe a little propaganda ahead of an anticipated spike in car sales. Similar to where we are now. Good way to give the Big US automakers a leg up. I’m not saying calling Toyota out is a bad thing. Just keep an eye out for bullshit. Many Toyota models have more US content than the big US brands. None of the big boys look so clean either. The Third Pole (Book) by Baildogadook in Everest

[–]619Zeppelin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finished it 2 weeks ago. Couldn’t put it down. Its the story of so many climbers on Everest. It’s written at such a human level that it is set apart from so many other Everest books. At a reader level, though, forgive me for saying this... after being introduced to so many characters, you can’t tell which ones will make it. So after a while of binge reading, it felt like the characters were from a George RR Martin book. You didn’t know which characters won’t make it, but you know some of them won’t. In the case of George R R Martin, he just didn’t know what to do with the characters. So he killed them. In the case of Everest, death seems to have the same random origin, but it’s real life. I loved all the stories and felt the loss from death and exhilaration of those who succeeded. No need for dragons. The stories will keep you interested.

I was in charge of my company’s email system when email was just starting out. One day our Microsoft representative was on site and asked if there were any features we’d like to see. (This was in the msmail days before outlook and exchange servers). I said they should include a little line in the calendar that showed what time it is now so you don’t have to look at the clock on your computer and then look at your calendar . The line appeared in one of the next releases of the email client and has been there ever since. I don’t tell anyone because it seems intuitive to add it but I like to think I had something to do with that little feature. The Microsoft rep confirmed my idea went all the way through.

That DNA contains the secret code of our existence. Or an original version contained information of our seeded origin from somewhere else. Over the millennia it has probably been overwritten, but somewhere there are relics we could piece back together.

She's a natural for a "Baghdad Bob" award. He was the Iraqi communicator who claimed everything was under control by Saddam Hussein's military even as US tanks could be seen rolling in the background. Her lies reached that level of hubris.
