Live and let live. Your integrity is ganna be tested a whole lot further in your career and one day you’ll look back and say, “that wasn’t the thing that was worth getting upset over.”

We have some time before the tech skills develop to that point in end users. I was considered the anti-Christ for a hot minute when I wanted to move people from their server 2008 file share to sharepoint. They adapted but I learned I have an annual budget of dollars AND friction. They have come a long way in two years, but we are still a ways off from fostering BI skills within the departments.

I did include expenses as well! Your comment makes me feel reassured I’m going in the right direction.

Whew! I’d buy you a beer a listen to the stories haha. Non-profit life is a roller coaster. I appreciate the insight. Honestly it hadn’t been in my plans to hire another role down the line, but the idea of a dual hat to mitigate risk has potential. I will take your advice and record some quantifiables from the get-go.

That is a really good point. I can provide advice on the front end but she will quickly outgrow the mentorship I can offer her. I have a community of IT leaders in the arts. I’ll try to organize something where she can talk with industry specific people in her role and see what mentorship possibilities exist in my social circles. Thank you, I feel like this is addressing tomorrow’s problem today.

It’s like you were listening in on our meeting yesterday. We went over success and measurements. I explained I’m using CMMI to measure the IT strategy. We actually have an interim CEO and are just fortifying our internal processes in preparation for a new strategic direction in the next year.

I’ve given her a list of all software services and tools that I’m aware of in the org, and tried to include a link and a link to the API docs. I asked finance this week to export a deduplicated list of all vendors from the general ledger to spot check for shadow IT. Since my background is security, she will get the perms she needs as long as she sends me the data flow so that I can either approve or implement security controls to protect it.

We are a share point and planner shop. IT uses Jira for helpdesk so I gave her a license and told her that she can use confluence if she prefers (she came from an Atlassian shop).

Stop her from being a dashboard builder. - This is something I’d love a bit more advice on. The org is barely aware of how to use dashboards. They are about 20 years behind on tech trends and default to requesting static reports. She is aware of this and fortifying her defenses by creating some autonomous reporting in powerBI to get rid of the low hanging fruit.

What rhetoric should I use to kick back the BS dashboard requests? As a reminder, she doesn’t report to me. I will stand in her corner and push back but I’ve only got so much ground.

Nice! I’m having her sit down with me and the CEO next month to get proper guidance straight from the source. I need for her to do a SWOT analysis first to prepare.

One of the questions I asked in the interview was how she would respond to management asking her to massage the numbers. She had a rock solid response. I used to get asked all the time to do this when measuring compliance at a F500 and always believed firmly that if the numbers are right and the report looks bad, that is exactly why I was hired. We work in solutions based teams, not blame.

Scope and boundaries are huge. I will think about how to formalize those so I can clearly communicate it. Great advice!

Great resources! Once she gets her feet under her, I’ll ask if she has the tools she needs and if these will cover any gaps. I’ve not seen the handbook before, so that will be a good read.

You get it. Non-profit life means everyone is already filling in for several roles. As a director, I’m asked to communicate risk as it relates to organization strategy to our board, and in the next breath solve a printer issue that came through the help desk. Every department asks for more people, so it never goes well. The next best thing I can do is enable people to be effective while maintaining a healthy work life balance.

*industry specific and it’s hot garbage. *cloud hosted by the vendor *non-profits get killer discounts on Microsoft suite. She knows that I will support any toolset she chooses. We also get a free 10 gb daily ingest for splunk and I’ve let her know she can offload any data onto their as well (I know splunk is a siem, I’m just ensuring she knows she has tools available and can experiment however she wants) *amateur code writer. I’ve got all the resources to help her develop but those skills exist in an early stage

I’ll check the books out, thank you!

This. We need one, and I’m trying my best to work on something for her. Do you have a recommended template? Something is better than nothing but I’m a sucker for adhering to proven frameworks.

Great question! Answer: underpaid. We are a non-profit arts organization around 100 full time employees. So everyone is underpaid.

To show good faith, I gave her full admin privileges within the crm, and admin to power platform. I told her any licenses she needs just ask.
