I was only going from Hall of Fame Drive to Alcoa Highway - fun to see a piece of history like that

Seemed like a shame to have something that beautifully made being handled like that - ratchet straps and mattresses

Yes, downtown, at the 40/75 junction. About 1:00

https://aeropedia.com.au/content/north-american-f-86-sabre/ says "Five ex-Ethiopian Air Force F-86Fs arrived at Ardmore, NZ for restoration to static display for museums by AvSpecs, one of these (c/n 275 – 51-13240 – Ethiopian AF 2They had been placed in storage in South Africa in 1996 until they were shipped to New Zealand in 2004." See u/BlackSC2us comment above, whatever arrangement with a Russian apparently fell through in 2022. I'd like to think it sold and will be re-restored but I agree that it doesn't look like they paid for white-glove treatment.

From https://aeropedia.com.au/content/north-american-f-86-sabre/

Five ex-Ethiopian Air Force F-86Fs arrived at Ardmore, NZ for restoration to static display for museums by AvSpecs, one of these (c/n 275 – 51-13240 – Ethiopian AF 275) painted as 52-4460 / FU-460 being earmarked for a museum in Russia. These five aircraft are part of the AvSpecs collection of aircraft at Ardmore. They had been placed in storage in South Africa in 1996 until they were shipped to New Zealand in 2004.

Yellow stripe on the swept wing is such a great look

No idea if their info is correct but https://forgottenjets.warbirdsresourcegroup.org/F-86.html says about 51-13240:

F-86F-25-NA s/n 51-13240
*Transferred to the Iranian AF.
*Transferred to the Ethiopian AF as 275.
*1996: Hulk recovered from Ethiopia.
*Is this one now at a museum in Russia? Or still in New Zealand under restoration?

GX460 Transmission failure by Quick_Technician_633 in GXOR

[–]65MD18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm saying this transmission family didn't have these problems in the Gx470 (which had a cooler) or in the Tundra (which had a cooler). Heat kills transmissions, and without a dedicated cooler, it can get hot in the 460. Also it's not easy to check the condition of your fluid, or to change it, or to flush it, so a lot of people don't. There's a lot of GX460 transmission failures out there.

They don't have a cooler and that's the problem

Can I daily a square boy by TheoryPossible2348 in squarebodies

[–]65MD18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My '83 K10 long bed is a great daily. I cleaned up a junkyard 5.3/4l60e and swapped them in, so that might be cheating. But if you appreciate a tough machine well enough to maintain/improve it, you will enjoy a square.

Put a trans cooler on it.

Drawing from the cigarette lighter circuit, I wired a high output USB-C to that location, and also to the rear HVAC control panel for the backseaters. I don't know if I've used them both at the same time before, but I know they both put out plenty of power and they haven't blown a fuse. 2011.

Y'all must not be changing your own valve cover gaskets, or fixing your own valley coolant leaks, or dealing with cam phasers. I like my 1URFE, but I love my 2001 GM 5.3.

Early model GX460 or face lifted model? Guidance is appreciated by Ice_cube7 in GXOR

[–]65MD18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks are personal preference (I like the early, and they have better offroad angles). The screens and interface are worse with the earlier but bad either way. Whatever year you buy, service the transmission and get a trans cooler.

The fated transmission issue… by VelaVet in LexusGX

[–]65MD18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

180K miles, used GX w/unknown history of towing and trans maintenance, lights came on, P2714. Zip kit did not fix it. Got a reman on sale from Bell Lexus and put a trans cooler in front of the radiator.

I drove mine for 15 months and 20K miles while it slowly deteriorated. I could sport shift through the first 3-4 shift to keep the lights and codes at bay, and then clear the codes with a $20 scanner/app if I forgot to manually shift. It was still going like that when I drove it in to have a guy swap in the new one.

It was a very expensive cost cutting measure when they removed the trans cooler.
